70. Without a Queen there is no King.

For the first time in his life, Eros sat on the large leather armchair behind the Alphas desk. Mary and Balthazar took places in front of him, leaving the old, worn-out couch for Luna. They sat in silence, each stuck in thoughts. Eros appeared way too calm, making Balthazar worried- an emotionless King is dangerous, but one with a missing mate might take upon duties of the death.

"Son," Lord breathed out. For a while now, he didn't address the man by his name- it was only King or son for the Lord.

"We can't start before my mother arrives, she has to hear what I've planned," Eros spoke coldly.
A hint of proudness lingered in his tone of voice, instantly sending shivers over Mary's spine. She knew Eros was up to no good.

"Before you do anything reckless, please, think twice. Imagine what Eve would think of your rushed decisions. You don't sound like yourself anymore; you are not the Eros I know!" Mary jumped to her feet, screaming from the top of her lungs.

"First of all- Eve is not here, is she? You don't know me; you've never known the real Eros. We met weeks ago, most of which I spent locked in an apartment with my now missing mate!" Eros roared in anger. He didn't bother to stand up, the beast in him was angered beyond limits- if Ares got on the surface, even Eros couldn't protect Mary from him.

Balthazar stepped in front of Mary, hiding her behind his massive frame. "Eros, please, let's try to be civilized here. Everyone should calm down and think about our next move if we want to find Eve as soon as possible. Your mother might be hiding something; I'm sure she has information about your mate's whereabouts. We're all equally worried and scared for her safety; we must work together to ensure that Eve comes back home safe and sound," Both men held intense eye contact until someone startled them, knocking on the door.

"Come in," Eros said.

A young blonde woman entered the office. Eros had seen her before; she was one of the Omegas, the woman who served pack guests and offered him a coffee at times.

"I'm sorry for arriving uninvited, but I have information for Mister Frost," she said quietly, her eyes glued on the floor.

"I'm listening." Eros leaned over the desk, showing off his interest in whatever news the woman could provide for him.

"I was asked to speak in private, sir."

"Isn't the setting here private enough?" He furrowed his eyebrows, displeased by the time the woman tried to waste.

"I mean, the person asked me to deliver a message in private. I was ordered that nobody, besides Mister Frost, heard what I'm about to say." The woman dropped on her knees, waiting for a punch or kick. Alphas were short-tempered; she hated to deliver messages to Xavier, and this man, sitting in the previous Alphas chair, might be the same.

"Lord Balthazar and his mate Mary are my grandparents; they may know everything you have to say. I hold no secrets from my family. You have nothing to worry about; only a coward would harm the messenger. Go on, please," Eros motioned for her to get back on her feet, while he leaned back in the chair to feel a little more comfortable.

"I- it's about your mate, sir," she stuttered. The woman opened her mouth to deliver the message but got cut off by impatient Eros.

"Speak!" he yelled, making her flinch.

"Some of the pack members had seen her leaving with a man who didn't belong here. They say the stranger was a rogue and miss left with him willingly. They headed for the North border, Luna ran towards them a couple of minutes later and returned soon after."

"Anything else?"

"No, that's all, sir," she shook her head.

"You may leave," Eros dismissed her with a low growl. The woman bolted for the door faster than a bullet, just a few seconds later, the family left in privacy again. The men had unreadable facial expressions; only Mary looked genuinely shocked. Nobody dared to speak up or make any assumptions.

"I can't believe this!" Eros hissed, grabbing a photo frame from the desk, and throwing it at the wall. Mary and Balthazar watched how the glass shattered after colliding with the hard surface.

"What are we going to do next?" Mary questioned them both, anxious to run out and start the search on her own if needed.

"If you truly love someone, you let them go, right? At least, that was what the saying was about, I suppose." Eros breathed out, hiding his face behind palms.

"You can't say the same about destined mates, son."

"So, I did remember the saying correctly. As I was saying- you let them go. If the person returns, it means that their heart has always been with you. If not, you hunt them down and kill them. If that maid wasn't lying, it's just what I'm about to do," Eros dropped his body back in the seat, looking up at the ceiling. Mary and Balthazar spoke over each other, unbothered by the King's sour expression and angered mood. Eros acted like he didn't care anymore, like he didn't need Eve.

"You cannot kill your mate!" Mary was about to keep on reasoning with Eros, but Luna entered the office without knocking. Her eyes roamed over the room, instantly sensing the tense atmosphere between the shifters in front of her. Slowly, she approached the last free seat and dropped in it, waiting for someone to talk.

"Why are we not talking yet? You wanted me here, speak boy. I have so many responsibilities, so many things to do, and a funeral to plan- you better be quick!" Luna didn't drop her sassy attitude, rather pleased about how strong the words, leaving her lips, sounded.

"Funeral?" Eros finally looked at his mother.

"Yes, for my mate." Luna announced proudly.

"You are going to burn his body, that bastard doesn't deserve a funeral, I told you about this shit already," Eros snapped back.

"And I told you that he deserves to be buried! I won't fry him like a fucking hotdog. That man was an Alpha, dominant at that; he deserves our respect!" Luna, the same as Eros, was quite a stubborn persona, never stopping until she gets what she wants.

" And I said no!"

"Who gives you rights to go around and command me? You haven't yet accepted the crown, and I am this pack's Luna. My word is the law; everyone follows my lead, no matter where I could take them. You have no power on me, boy!" she yelled.

"Let's set things straight, shall we? You are no longer Luna; you are the one to drop on knees in front of me. I may not yet be a king, but I killed an Alpha. I slaughtered the pack leader, meaning that you are no longer their Luna or superior. I am your superior now; I will lead your precious little pack. I will make sure to change everything here, for Luna's bastard, the unwanted Alpha has become an Alpha."

"Are you not taking the throne then? How will we live without a King? We have travelled the world in search of our ruler, and now, when we have him right under our noses, he will go a different path," Mary ranted, grabbing and pulling onto her hair in frustration.

"Without a Queen, there is no King, Mary. I am not refusing the throne, but I am taking over the pack leader role. After I find Eve, we will discuss the possibilities and options which will work best for everyone. At this point, I have to make sure that she returns home safely and that my child is healthy. If my mother hasn't lied- Eve left to get rid of our child. As I stand here, if that turns out to be true- mate or not, she will regret it," Eros was about to leave the office. He needed a run out in the wild; his mind clouded with fear and anger. The thing he hated the most was the helpless state he ended up in. Eros wasn't quite a control freak, but he also wasn't the type of person who would let others push him around. He made that mistake in his early years, but now Eros wouldn't allow anyone to do that anymore. Except for Eve- next to her, Eros was the most powerful and the weakest man alive. Next to her, he felt as if tomorrow was worth waiting for. He didn't want to believe his mother, he really didn't, but all evidence he got was against Eve. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't forget how his mother sounded when she mentioned the baby. Eros could be a dad.

"Alpha!" a warrior rushed into the office, reaching for Eros. At times, when the pack leader was killed- rank instantly went to the one who defeated the Alpha. Eros killed Xavier, making him a leader without ceremonies or any training. The pack knew who was the strongest one of them all, and none defied their new leader. Oddly enough- everyone welcomed him. Maybe all those stories about Xavier's unfair and aggressive nature were true. Perhaps everyone here thinks that thanks to Eros, they are free?

"I should start getting used to being called that, I guess. Has anything happened?" Eros turned his attention to the panting male.

"We- we were able to track her. The rest of the patrol and tracker team is waiting for us near the borders; I was sent to escort you there," the warrior spoke in a rather rushed manner, nearly half of his words were hard to catch on.

"Here, drink, you must be thirsty," Eros reached for the bottle of water, on the desk, and threw it at the warrior. Male eyed Eros suspiciously, everyone knew that there was no such thing as a kind Alpha. Xavier was a brilliant example, making sure that the pack members would never forget where they stand. The man gulped down the water greedily and thanked his new Alpha, trying to breathe slower.

"What are we waiting for? Let's go, lead the way!" Eros approached the warrior, placed a hand on his shoulder, and encouraged the male to follow him. As they left, a worried-looking Mary and Balthazar were left behind, no choice other than being patient and waiting for Eros to return.
Luna sneaked out of the office as soon as she knew that nobody was watching her. She had to see how far the human got until a rogue sliced her like a thanksgiving turkey.
