The First Night Shift

STAR'S POV:

I hated to leave for work! I'm not sure why I even agreed to this! I'm such an idiot. I want to be with Conri at night, not at work. This is all I keep asking myself, "Why did I agree to this!" When I arrived at work, I went straight to the third floor, where I'm supposed to work. It seems so different, the halls look bare since no one is up, it's quiet and calm. Maybe I could get used to this.

Dayturn is so much more busy. Everyone is up and sitting in the halls, it's like chaos here. All the bosses work in the daytime. At least I won't see Ben here at these hours. So I guess this isn't so bad. I walked to the nurses station to get report and the one nurse said that I'm going to be with another nurse aide, she will train me on the night shift. I felt a bit of relief because I did not know what to expect, I know how to do my job, but I wasn't sure of how they work on the night shift.

I guess I'm going to be doing rounds with Sabrina. She's one of the other nurse aide's. I don't know her well since I've never worked with her. I know I'll catch on quick, I know I'm good at taking care of people, so she won't have to train me long.

After we got report from the charge nurse, Sabrina started training me. She took me to the linen closet and we got out all the linen that we need for tonight. Then I walked with her on our side of the hall and we passes out the linen to the residents. After that, she said that we are supposed to fill all the residents water pitchers, so we did that. After we finished with that, we started our first round of the night. Which is to check on the residents and make sure they are taken care of. Sabrina mentioned that we do three rounds during the night shift, then early in the morning, before our shift ends we get a few of our people up.

"This is a piece of cake," I thought to myself, but i didn't let Sabrina know how easy it is for me. I must remeber to keep my guard up around people that I don't know. they cannot find out that I'm a shifter!

I hang with Sabrina during the night. Four hours later, it's time to take our break. She takes her lunch break in the break room, I went outside and sat on the bench in front of the building, I noticed Conri had called me a bit earlier, but I couldn't answer the phone then, so I called him back.

"Hey. I couldn't answer your call because I was working. And what are you doing up at this time of the night?" I asked.
"Babe. I wanted to make sure you are okay. I was worried about you," He replied.
"Awww.. Thank you! I'm okay. This shift is easy, it's not like dayturn so I could get used to this," I chuckled and said.
"That's good. I'm glad to hear you're okay!" He replied.
"Yes. I'm fine! I'm on my lunch break right now," I said.
"Do you want me to come visit you?" He asked.
"Ahhh. Well, I'd love for you to come visit but I'm not sure if you're allowed. How about if I find out from the charge nurse when I go back in then I will let you know when I get home?" I asked him.
"Okay. I understand. I'll see you in about four hours," He said.
"I can't wait to see you!" I replied.

We both hung up the phone, I had to get back to work, Sabrina is probably back from her break and wondering where I am. I rushed to the third floor and she's sitting at the desk, she must have been waiting on me because no sooner that I got back we started our second round of the night. Rounds usually take an hour to finish. When we finished with second rounds, I thought to myself, "What could there be to do next? There isn't much to do now." Sabrina went back to the desk and sat down, she mentioned that we just wait until we do our last round now.

I really thought, damn this is so easy. I couldn't believe how easy the night shift is. I couldn't wait to get home and tell Conri about this! It is near 5:30 in the morning and we work on our last round. It went so smooth because we worked together and it makes our job so much easier. After we finished with rounds, we both got one resident a piece to get up. We bathed them and helped them get in their chair for when hteir breakfast arrives.

Right when I walked out of one of the residents room, I couldn't believe my eyes. I stopped suddenly and had to take another look. It is him standing at the nurses station. "What is Ben doing here this early, he can't even make it on time when he has to be here at 8:00 in the morning. I don't know what to think a sto why he's here this early, I kinda feel freaked out, I did not expect to see him, now thoughts are racing through my head, "Why is he here, Is he stalking me, is he watching me?" I had to calm myself down before I walk up to the nurses station and give the nurse my report.

I sucked it up and just walked to the nurses station. As I stood at the nurses station, Ben looks at me and asks me how my night went. I instantly felt like a fool, I had those thoughts and all he wanted to know is how my night went. I must stop overreacting about things, it's going to make me crazy, I told him that it went well. He gave me a smile and said, "I'm glad. I just wanted to make sure you were okay with the night shift."
