Chapter 115 Lifesaving Money
"Mr. Phillips, with your busy schedule, there's no need to go out of your way to visit my mother," said Sharon Bush, biting her lip in an effort to restrain her emotions.
"Sharon, what are you talking about? We're friends," replied Eric Phillips with a strained smile.
"Mr. Phillips, I... I really can't compare to you," Sharon continued, her lips still trembling.
It was clear Sharon was struggling, feeling uncomfortable with the situation.
Eric, seeing Sharon's distress, wished he could rush to her and embrace her. However, remembering the complications with Tina Gory, he held back.
"Knowing that you're alright gives me peace of mind. I won't disturb you any longer," Eric said before turning to leave, struggling to contain his emotions.
"Sharon, please see Mr. Phillips out," her mother urged quickly.
After a moment's hesitation, Sharon decided to walk Eric out.
Once outside, Sharon's eyes reddened, and she said, "Eric, I'm so useless... Please, let's not talk anymore. Whenever I hear your voice, I... I can't control my feelings."
Her lips quivered, and her hands were clenched tightly.
Hearing this and seeing her state, Eric felt a pang in his heart.
After a long silence, he looked up at Sharon and said, "I'm sorry, Sharon. I'll leave you be."
With that, Eric turned and walked away, leaving Sharon to watch his retreating figure as tears fell from her eyes.
...
Eric exited the hospital, his heart heavy, but he forced himself to bear the pain. Outside, he noticed a crowd gathered and moved closer to see what was happening.
Approaching, he saw a young woman at the center of the crowd, kneeling on the ground with a sign that read:
"Urgent: Need a temporary loan for my child's surgery. Funds are incoming."
The woman was young, dressed simply, but her beauty couldn't be hidden. Most of the onlookers were there for the spectacle, and after a few glances, they walked away.
"Please, someone help us. We’ll pay back as soon as possible! My child is on the operating table right now, it's urgent!" she pleaded with those around her.
One bald, portly man sneered, "Beauty, if you spend a few nights with me, I'll give you the money. How about it?"
Many in the crowd looked at him with disdain, but no one intervened, noting the BMW keys hanging from his belt.
The young woman's face turned pale upon hearing his words.
The bald man laughed and continued, "What, not enough for you? Given your looks, I'll add more. How about ten thousand? A small sacrifice for your child, right?"
"Shut up!"
A cold voice rang out, silencing the crowd. It was Eric Phillips.
"You have no shame, do you? Your behavior is disgusting," Eric said icily.
"You little punk, mind your own business, you—"
The bald man began to retort but stopped mid-sentence when he saw the Lamborghini keys in Eric's hand.
The man quickly forced a smile and said, "Good sir, please forget I said anything. I'll be on my way!"
Though he drove a BMW, he knew better than to mess with someone who drove a Lamborghini.
"Wait!" Eric called out to the man.
"What else do you want, sir?" the bald man asked, now fearful.
"Apologize to the lady," Eric commanded.
"Alright, alright, I apologize," the man nodded, turning to the young woman. "Miss, I was out of line. I'm sorry."
Satisfied with the apology, Eric waved him off, and the man quickly disappeared into the crowd.
"That young man is impressive, just a few words and he made that bully apologize."
"That bully looked tough, but he turned out to be a coward, scared off by a few harsh words."
"Either way, good on that young man."
...
The crowd praised Eric as the young woman thanked him, "Sir, I can't thank you enough."
"It's nothing. If I'm going to help, I might as well go all the way. Here's ten thousand, take it," Eric said, handing her the money.
The young woman's shock quickly turned to joy. "Thank you! Thank you so much, sir!"
She accepted the money and promised, "I'm not a scammer, sir. I'll go pay and be right back."
She handed Eric her ID card—her name was Olivia—then rushed into the hospital.
After she left, several onlookers commented, "Young man, that's clearly a scam."
"She took the money; she'll just slip out another door."
"You're too kind, people will take advantage of you."
Eric just smiled and didn't respond. He chose to believe in the girl's sincerity.
If he was deceived, ten thousand wasn't a big loss for Eric. But if it could save a life, he felt it was worth it.
The crowd dispersed, leaving Eric to wait alone.
About five minutes later...
"It's you!"
A voice came from behind. Eric turned to find Hailey Anderson approaching the hospital.
"Hailey, it's you. Did you get the message I sent?" Eric greeted her with a smile.
"Eric Phillips, you're just trying to stir up trouble between me and my boyfriend with that fake video, aren't you? You rich kids have nothing better to do!" Hailey retorted angrily.
"Do you still believe he wouldn't stoop for money? Whether the video is real or not, why don't you ask your 'noble' boyfriend?" Eric shook his head with a smile.
"Don't worry, I'm getting the video authenticated. Once it's confirmed, I'll be coming for you with a defamation claim," Hailey declared.
"Fine by me. You'll see the truth soon enough," Eric replied cheerfully.
"I don't have time to waste on you!"
Hailey stormed off into the hospital. Once inside, she made a call and then went to a room.
Outside the room...
"Olivia, here's the money for the surgery. I hope I'm not too late," Hailey handed an envelope to a young girl.
If Eric were there, he would recognize her immediately—it was the same girl he had just helped at the hospital entrance, the one named Olivia.
"The surgery fee is paid, and they're about to start," Olivia said with a smile.
"Oh? Where did you get the money?" Hailey was surprised.
"The doctors were pressing. They said if we didn't operate now, we'd miss the chance. I didn't know when you'd arrive, so I had to try my luck asking for help outside the hospital. I didn't expect a kind man to lend me ten thousand," Olivia recounted with a smile.
"Someone lent you ten thousand without knowing you? Good people are hard to find these days," Hailey remarked.
"Yes, that gentleman was so kind. Not only did he lend me the money, but he also drove away a man who was insulting me," Olivia's face beamed with gratitude.
