Is Fenrir Marsai’s mate?
Fenrir's POV
"It can't be," came the doubting voice of Marsai, "Fenrir cannot be my mate" she added with a low sigh.
I was still confused about what they were all talking about and why I was even in their conversation. I leaned in closer to the door out of deep curiosity.
"Are you sure?" I heard Elena ask.
Marsai must have nodded, because she then answered, "Yes, I mean if he was my mate, I would have known, right? The first day we met, yesterday when he tried to…or the wedding night—all the times he had been here"
"Yeah," Elena concurred, "you're right, that does make sense."
"I honestly hope he's not my mate." Even though it was a mumble, I heard what Marsai said.
Leah cleared her throat, the sound reaching my ears, "Marsai, I also hope Fenrir isn't your mate, but what if he is though?"
"Ugh, Leah you just heard what she said—"
"Yeah, yeah I know Elena," Leah stressed before continuing, "but Marsai, what if you did not catch the scent at that time because you were probably traumatized by all that had happened?"
"Is that a thing?" Marsai asked, "like, is it actually possible?"
"Actually, yes." Elena’s voice pitched, "I remember once Rudolph told us about the war that took place a long time ago across the wolf lands, he also mentioned that a distant aunt of ours found her mate at that time in one of the rival packs."
"Yes, I remember that story," Leah overlapped, "she had met him earlier during that time, but she was too traumatized by the war and the fighting to notice his scent. It was after a while that she did. So, yes, there’s a possibility this may be your case too, Marsai.”
Marsai shifted, the sound of the crunching sheets underneath her reaching my ears, "Yeah, maybe that is possible…but what about the first time we met?"
"The first time you met?" Elena tilted her head to the side in question.
"What about it?" Leah asked.
"There was nothing traumatizing about that moment. I mean, he was unconscious so why didn't I pick up his scent then?"
"Well…" Leah, hooked. "I guess, maybe, there is also the possibility that he is not your mate.”
This was literally the first time I have ever heard of the word 'Mate' used in this context. I wonder what it meant and why they were talking about it like it was something really important. Shifting away from the door I sighed as I searched through my newly acquired memories of Hawk to find out what it means.
What I found was slightly shocking. It seems a mate, according to the Wolf lore, is the destined lifetime partner of another werewolf. But that wasn't exactly surprising. What was shocking was that even Hawk had a mate but…she had left him since she was in love with the Beta of the pack. It seems this Mate bond does not compel the Werewolves to be in love with each other. It's sad to know that Hawk didn't have anything, not even his mate, he couldn't even be with her, she chose to leave him for their….beta.
Hm. Beta. My brows furrowed to this little realization, what if the same thing happens to me? I mean, I don't know if I'm Marsai's mate or not but I was her husband…what if she eventually leaves me for Rudolph? Beta of this pack? I grit my teeth as I thought about the possibility. I recalled how close they both seemed to each other the second time we met.
No. I will never allow it, never. Whether I end up being Marsai's mate or not, I will never allow anyone else to be her mate. Especially not Rudolph. She's mine, only mine. She belongs to me, and no one else was allowed to have her.
I still don't fully understand how this mate bond thing works, and I can't help but wonder how it would feel if I ended up being Marsai's mate. Will I crave for her more than I already am?
As I stood there lost in thought, the echo of Elena's laughter pinged through my ears. I leaned in, wondering what she was laughing about.
"Well," she giggled in the midst of her laughter, "if it isn't Fenrir, then it must be one of the guards last night, or anyone else." She snickered in a mocking tone. "You can end up being the Alpha's wife, or the Luna whose mate is a guard, a common servant" she laughed.
"Stop that. It's not funny" Leah scolded.
"Sorry" Elena scoffed.
"Well," Marsai sighed rather dejectedly, "whoever it is, I'll definitely find out. I have to"
"I have a question though," Leah said, "If you do find your mate and it isn't Fenrir, what will you do?"
Before Marsai could answer, Elena pitched in, "what do you mean, what will she do?"
"I mean, will you leave the pack with him?"
"Yes" came the non hesitant voice of Marsai. "Yes, I will," she said.
"Yes" came the non hesitant voice of Marsai. "Yes, I will" she had said.
What? Was she serious?
"You really will leave?" I heard Leah ask her.
"I will leave and I will never return, away from crescent ever again" she added.
"Fenrir won't let you go—"
"I'll escape." I frowned as I heard her speak like that. She still wants to escape?
"Escape, how?" Elena asked in mock curiosity, "the last time you tried that, you ended up in the dungeon. What makes you think you can successfully pull it off again?"
"Because," Marsai answered, "unlike the last time, I have help now."
I edged closer to the door, not caring if I'm caught eavesdropping or not. I peeped through the little space in the hinge of the door just in time to see Elena and Leah pass each other confused looks.
"I very much hope we are not the help you're talking about" Elena said.
