Best of yesterday

Marsai

They say regret of a tiring wonderful evening, comes in the morning and I couldn't agree more.

I didn't realize how fatigued I was yesterday probably because I was filled with adrenaline and excitement from the places Leah and I explored.

I stir in my bed, putting my weight on my side, and backing the glow that came from my opened drapes. I still feel tired after falling asleep the instant my body touches the bed.

It was only now that I regretted leaving the carriage at the Beta’s house and walking all the way back home. It must have been madness. Or maybe it wasn't, maybe it was a certain someone.

Damn. I just want to get rid of him in my mind.

I replayed yesterday's event in my head and realized it was worth it. I had fun with my best friend and gained some clarity on Fenrir's case even though I'm still not willing to open my heart to him.

The play was my favorite part of yesterday. If Fenrir and I ever settled our disputes, I planned to take him to the theater if they ever had a replay as they said they would.

I shook my head at the absurdity of my thought before I perceived the smell of eggs around me.

I forced my body to flip the other way. And I found a tray filled with a plate, must be the eggs, some fruits and other stuff.

A note was laying beside it, written in black in, that reads;

Please eat, you must be famished.

A soft knock coming from my door jolts my attention away from the plate on my bedside and I snapped my eyes to the door.

Dragging my feet towards it, I peep into the keyhole to see who it was. Some part of me expects to see broad muscles cladded in dark robes but it turns out to be my maid, Clara, instead.

Unlocking the door wide, I ushered her in.

"Milady, Good morning." She bows, still standing by the entrance.

"I see you still haven't had your meal, I will let you be." She says, taking another bow before attempting to leave.

She must have brought it when I was still fast asleep but why did she leave a note? That's strange.

I furrow my brows in confusion before smiling at her. "It's okay, Clara. Besides, I need some company to keep me awake.” Maybe she was worried about me.

It has been days since my hunger strike, and I am getting weaker. If Leah hadn't convinced me to eat yesterday, I probably wouldn't be standing right now.

“Can I steal some of your time?” I grin and Clara nod cheerfully. “The eggs smell divine by the way." I decided to compliment her handwork, it was truly splendid.

"Thank you, Milady." She smiles politely, confirming that she had indeed brought me breakfast.

I closed the door quietly, trying not to wake Fenrir, in case he was still asleep, he does have sensitive ears.

I began to eat immediately after we got back to my bed. I feel glad that Clara was nice enough to let me eat half of the plate before she started a conversation.

"So, how was the play? I heard it is the talk of the town." Clara finally spoke up.

Dropping the fork, I turn to her. The thrill had returned. "Oh, it was splendid. I didn't know the theater outside the pack was that good. The acting was unbelievably great, I think I would want to go there again sometime in the future." I feel myself just glowing talking about the experience.

She has a nostalgic look on her which made me ask. "Have you been to the theatre before?"

"Yes. Once with my father. I was only a little girl, some of the beautiful details have blurred out by now, I barely remember what the seats look like or if they later changed the hard bench." She lets out a light chuckle.

"Well, they have. Maybe one day, the Alpha would let me take my special maid on a date out and we could all go to the theater together." I suggested. A smile spreads her lips further apart.

"That would be nice, Milady. Thank you."

"Oh, it's nothing. You deserve some extra delight after preparing meals such as a nice breakfast." I smile back at her genuinely. She lets me finish eating before engaging me in another conversation.

"Milady.."

"Yes?"

"I have a confession to make actually.." She hesitates, but I smile at her, urging her to go on.

"I didn't prepare the food you just ate." She spilled.

I wrinkle my face in confusion, she was serious. "You didn't?"

"Yes. I didn't."

"Was it the butler or the chief maid?" I inquire further. A food of this quality spoke experience.

"None of the above either, Milady. It was the Alpha." Clara confessed and I almost choked my saliva.

"What Alpha?! Fenrir?" I was too taken aback to believe her confession.

"When I came into your room to check up earlier, you were still asleep..must be because you came in quite late yesterday. That was when I stumbled upon him placing the food tray on the bedside." She explained.

“I also saw him in the kitchen a few minutes before… frying eggs those eyes you just ate." Clara added, begging me not to blame her with her eyes.

"Woah…" I couldn't believe her words.

"Forgive me, Milady. I didn't reveal this earlier because… I- the whole courthouse has noticed you've been avoiding the Alpha after what happened. I assure you he regrets his actions because he had been bringing you breakfast every morning even though you didn't touch it. Every night after he comes back from work, he raids the cellar and drinks until you return. He leaves out his light and wouldn’t agree to sleep until you return.”

“This will affect the Alpha’s health, Milady.” Clara warned me like Fenrir wasn’t a big bad wolf.

Hmph. So, that was why his lights were left on yesterday…

"It's fine." I cut her off. "I'm not mad. Surprised, yes, but not mad. At least, not at you.” I sighed.

Still shocked that Fenrir knew how to fry eggs...properly. Wasn’t the last one he brought a horrible sight?

I didn't even remember how I had shamelessly checked the tray to see what he had brought to me the morning after he had sex with another woman in the room beside mine.

"There's also one more thing.." Clara started. This time, she looked scared and anxious.

"What is it?" I ask, getting a little impatient myself.

"I overheard Miss Elena talking to the Alpha yesterday.” She revealed and I tensed up naturally.

“What did she have to say to him?” Fenrir wasn’t friendly with anyone aside from me and I just never pictured him having an interest in Elena.

“She told him that you had actually tried to escape and also how she had the evidence that you gave her your parcel."

Instantly after Clara's words, all I could hear was my quickened heartbeat racing in my ear. But I was in Clara's presence, I could show any sign of fear.

"And what was his reaction?" I inquired in a thin shaky voice.

"I couldn't see his reaction from where I stood, I was just walking close by when I heard someone say your name. I happened to eavesdrop on their conversation but I couldn't stall, or else the Alpha would have noticed."

"Thank you, Clara. I'm sure it's nothing anyways." I chuckle dismissively, giving her a reassuring smile.

"You may go now, I would like to lay to rest for a while." I told her in a kind voice so she didn't think I was mad at her.

"Alright Milady. Good day." She walks to the door before turning around to stare at me, I offer a small smile before she opens the door and shuts it behind her.

My head almost blew up when I was finally alone.

Goodness. What has Elena done?
