Chapter 16

(Alexander POV)

If I was not technically dead, I could swear seeing Amelia’s limp body would have killed me. I was stunned at the sight of her when she was lying in Owen’s arms not breathing, completely lifeless. So many things raced through my mind in that moment. Like how I was already so attached to her that even though I told her I would never leave her because it seemed like the right thing to say, I truly mean it. Did she know that? I was not a romantic and, in the beginning, I wasn’t really bothering to pretend that I was. Not until I realized how stressed Amelia was, and even though we were soul mates I didn’t feel completely invested beyond teasing her. I have never been good with romance or woman but seeing Amelia and being around her made me want to try. So, I have been imitating everything I had ever seen in those cheesy romance films to give the impression that I was a romantic guy, but the truth was I was new to it all.

I felt drawn to her, very strongly, but I didn’t know how to act on those feelings. I just wanted her to smile, to make her happy so I figured…fake it ‘till you make it! I was going to pretend to be the best boyfriend until it came naturally! It seemed to be working because she seemed to relax when we were together, but then she was gone. I had never felt such a surge of pain in my heart like I felt when I thought I had lost her forever. I wanted to find Isa and scream at her for doing this to me, I didn’t care if I agreed or not, I would hate her forever for this.

That was until Amelia suddenly took in a breath and woke in confusion. I was stunned at her sudden revival and when she looked to me and Owen we were just as confused as she was. Her eyes were frost blue, stunning and beautiful.

“What?” She asks us when we don’t answer her first question. “Uh, my head.”

She groans and tries to stand.

Before any of us can say another word, the girl who I guess is a nurse bursts through the door with Isa and the elder following in a panic. Their just as surprised to see Amelia suddenly standing looking back at them.

“I swear she was dead a moment ago! She had no pulse!” the nurse says in a panic.

The elder rest a hand on her shoulder in reassurance before gently moving her aside so he could walk toward Amelia. Once they were standing looking at each other he looked at Amelia’s eyes.

“Welcome back Kaiah.” Is all he says before he runs his thumb down the center of Amelia’s forehead.

I glance at Owen and he looks confused, and for once I could relate to him. I was utterly confused. Who is Kaiah?

The elder steps away from Amelia and gives her a soft smile.

“Why did you wish to emerge now Kaiah?” He asks.

“Anaya was hurting, she was trying to protect me from being overwhelmed by the emergence, but she was growing tired. I did not want to make her suffer any longer, and I wanted it to be over and done with it.” Amelia admits.

“I understand child, but she was correct. The emergence took a lot out of you. You will feel weak for a little while, you need to rest. We will still meet tomorrow but now it will not be to help you transition but it will be to explore your powers.” He says before turning to us. “Both of you must remain by her side, your bond to her will help build her strength. Although it is weak because it is incomplete it will do for now. However, it would be wise to complete the bond before too long. She will need the strength of your bond to her if she is to endure what is ahead. Rest now.”

He bows to us and leaves.

“Amelia are you sure you are alright?” the nurse asks taking Amelia’s hands into her own.

“I think so, just a headache and I do feel a little tired.” Amelia says rubbing a finger to her temple.

“Ok, if you feel even a bit unwell have one of the boys come get me.” She says giving Amelia an encouraging smile before leaving as well.

Boys? Does she not realize I am hundreds of years older than her?

“Amelia do you wish for me to stay with you as well?” Isa steps forward and asks.

“No that’s ok! I have Alexander and Owen with me. Please don’t worry, I think I’m ok now.” Amelia says softly.

“I will bring you some tea for you, ok?” Isa says.

Amelia nods her head and thanks her, but as soon as everyone is gone, I could see she was putting on a brave face. She swayed slightly and I rushed to her to help stabilize her.

“Hey, what’s wrong?” I ask her.

“Just a little dizzy, I think I just need to sit.” She says with a trembling voice.
I help her over to the bed and help her sit down. She lets out a few shallow breaths squeezing her eyes tight.

“Amelia, what is it?” Owen asks kneeling in front of her and taking her hands.

“This headache is just intense.” She says rubbing her forehead.

She looks up to Owen blinking a few times, and his expression turned confused again. He looked to me and back to Amelia. I looked at her too and saw what was causing his sudden change of expression, Amelia’s eyes were normal again. The blue eyes she had a moment ago had gone and been replaced by her normal eye color.

“What?” She asks us.

“Before, when you woke your eyes were blue but now, they are normal again.” Owen explains.

She looks at us a little surprised. “My eyes changed? Again?”

“What do you mean again?” Owen asks.

Amelia looked away in what looked like a moment of guilt.

“It had happened when I was in the hospital, my eyes had changed but I was trying to stay myself until I met with the elder, so I waited until it faded and didn’t speak of it. I didn’t want to overwhelm you with all of this then, we had just met.” She says looking to Owen apologetically.

“You can always trust me! It is going to take more than that to send me running.” Owen says with a smile.

“Me too.” I chime in getting an eye roll from Owen.

Amelia laughs a little at our exchange. “Thank you. Sorry I did this without telling you guys first, I just wanted to get it over with.”

“It’s ok, but next time before you do something like that make sure you aren’t alone. You almost died.” Owen pleaded.

“Let us be here for you, even if it seems small. This is new and could be dangerous to you, so don’t go through any of it alone until you are sure you can control it!” I add. “Deal?”

I hold out my hand for her to agree. “Deal.” She says.

She looked exhausted and it was recommended she should rest so I tried to convince her to.

“We can leave so you can sleep.” I recommend.

She shakes her head but lies down slowly. “Please don’t go. I like having you both here with me.”

Owen and I looked to each other. We were both uncomfortable with the other touching or being near Amelia, but she was asking for us to be with her so how could we say no. We agreed in unison, taking a seat next to the bed putting a comfortable space between us.

“You guys can leave once I am asleep; I just don’t want to be alone yet.” She says her eye flickering shut.

“Don’t worry we will stay as long as you want.” Owen says

I admit I hated the way his voice would soften when he spoke to her, it was intimate, and I wanted to smack him every time. I knew all about wolf mates and how strong their bond is, which perhaps had me a bit worried about my place with Amelia. Our souls were bonded but she was a wolf and I wasn’t, and I didn’t know what that would mean for us. There had never been vampires who chose to be mates with a wolf. We are natural enemies, so I didn’t know how things would work between our kinds.

She would go through heat and want to carry a child at some point, but I wouldn’t be able to be a part of those moments in her life. Those moments would be something only her and Owen would share, they could become a family and what would that make me? Sure, these things were far off, but if we survived whatever danger we were soon to face life would move on. Amelia needed me as her protect her, but once her all is resolved would I still be needed? I wanted to be more to her, but I had nothing to offer her but my companionship.

She must have sensed my uneasiness because I felt her hand gently brush over my own.

“You are important to me.” She said with a sluggish whisper, her eyes still closed.

How did she know what I was thinking?

I turned my hand over to hold her hand properly which made her hum and smile happily. Maybe there was a lot I wouldn’t be able to be to her, but if she wanted me then that would have to be enough. Because I was falling hard for her each moment we were together, and I wanted nothing more right now than to just be near her. Maybe the future was uncertain, but right now I felt like I was where I needed to be. Her smile in this moment was enough to melt all my doubts away, at least for now.
