Chapter 28
(Owen POV)
The sound that left Amelia caused my wolf to shiver and I could feel him trying to break out. It wasn’t only the howl of our mate, but of a powerful wolf that had him scratching to break through and submit to her. I knew that all who heard it must have been fighting a similar battle. The power within her was far greater than I had realized, strong enough for even an alpha wolf to be willing to lower its head to her. Then it was over, and her eyes changed back, and she sat there like the beauty she was as if nothing had happened.
“Amelia?” I try to get her attention. “How do you feel?”
She looks at me with a dazed expression. “I’m ok I think.” She replies, offering me a weak smile.
“What happened?” She asks messaging the side of her head.
“There was an injured boy and you tied to help him but fainted after you started feeling a really bad pain.” Alexander says stepping up to the other side of the bed.
“The boy! Is he ok?” She asks slightly panicked.
“He is fine! What you did allowed his wolf to heal him, but it hurt you.” I explained to her.
“I-I took his pain.” She says.
“Because of what you did he was able to return to his family; I am just sorry you were hurt so bad.” I tell her taking her small hand in mine.
It was silent for a moment, but I needed to ask her about what had just happened.
“Amelia, that moment just now. The howl. What happened?” I ask her.
She looks to me and for a second her eyes change, and she gave me a smirk when my eyes widen in surprise.
“Something in me has changed in me now because of Alexander’s bite. That human side of me is stronger, and because of that Anaya does not have to hold back the power of The White Wolf. My body is strong enough now that the power can flow freely without it hurting me.” She says with a smile.
A moment ago, I was ready to rip Alexander’s head off for what he had done, but now I was glad I hadn’t. Somehow Amelia survived the bite and she was stronger because of it, so that meant in this case Alexander had actually done something useful.
She now turned to Alexander, who still had a guilty expression on his face. She reached for his hand and squeezed it softly to get him to look at her.
“You gave me a gift Alexander, so please don’t feel bad anymore! You did not mean to hurt me, and I know that! So, don’t blame yourself for it, ok?” Alexander nodded and brought her hand up to his lips and kissed it.
She then turned to me. “Are you ok? Your messages sounded urgent.”
I had forgotten all about the reason I had asked them to come.
“My father does not seem to be taking this attack on the pack seriously. He is acting like it was something we can recover from easily. He looked unfazed by the whole thing! I have a bad feeling about this whole thing, and what happened to my mom…I am not sure what to believe. Then the attackers returned yet again and almost burned the pack house down. I just don’t understand how it happened, and I feel like I am going crazy. I just needed you here with me.” I tell her laying my head on her hand.
Soon I felt her other hand resting on the top of my head and brushing my hair back softly. It was exactly what I needed! My mind was swarming with theories and questions, but her touch was enough to quite those for a short time.
(Amelia POV)
Seeing Owen so stressed had my mind pushing me to tell him about my theory that this had all been planned by his father. Part of me wasn’t sure if he would believe me, but I knew I had to tell him anyway.
“Owen, there is something I want to tell you and I am not sure if you will believe me…but it’s about your father…” Before I could finish the door opened and all of us turned to see the Alpha himself standing in the doorway to my room.
“Son.” He says stepping in with two men waiting in the hallway behind him. “So, this is your mate?”
Owen stands and turns to his body to hide me. “That’s right.”
I could feel that Owen’s trust in his father was already weak. Even if my suspicions were wrong, it was clear he already suspected his father of something. There was no trust between them now.
“Well, aren’t you going to introduce me?” his father asks with a fake smile.
Owen’s hands clenched by his side, so I reached out and touched his arm gently to tell him it was ok. He hesitated for a moment but then stepped back closer to the head of the bed and making room for his father to step closer and extend his hand.
“Hello, I am Owen’s father and the alpha of this pack. Aaron.” He held his hand out to me, but everything inside me was telling me not to touch him.
But I couldn’t give the impression that I suspected him, or he would see me as a threat. So, I extended my own hand and took his hand in a firm handshake. His eyes grew wide for a moment, and I could feel his hand tense and he pulled it away quickly. He messaged his hand gently from the painful shock he had felt when our hands touched. He tried not to show in his face, but in his eyes, I saw it. Fear. He knew now what I was, and he was afraid.
“You are no ordinary girl are you…” He waited for me to provide my name.
“Amelia Miller.” I say simply.
“Miller? Like Liam Miller?” he asks glancing to Owen for a moment.
“He is my brother.” I reply.
“Small world! He and my son have become very good friends since he arrived a few years ago. My son hopes to make him Beta of the pack when he becomes alpha! Your family will be very well off here it seems.” Although his voice seemed relaxed, I could sense his hidden anger as if it was radiating from every cell of his body.
He was doing his best to seem composed, but my senses were a lot stronger than before, and he wasn’t fooling me. I felt an urge to test his resolve, so I smiled and took Alexander’s hand.
“This is my second mate Alexander.” I said.
He had been trying so hard not to give himself away that he had not even sensed Alexander being in the room. Now his eyes turned to look at the man and when he realized what was standing in front of him, he stepped back and growled revealing his now extended canines.
“You brought a blood beast into the pack Owen? Are you insane?!” He said taking a defensive posture.
Alexander did not move or react at all, and neither did Owen or me.
“Like Amelia said, he is her mate as well. So, he accompanied her here.” Owen says simply.
“He is dangerous to the pack!” His father spit out.
“I would say we have more dangerous enemies at the moment wouldn’t you say? Alexander is not like others of his kind. He is not feral; he is very much in control as you can see.” Owen explains.
The Alpha slowly stands straight but keeps his eyes fixed on Alexander.
“You trust him?” He asks.
“I do.” Owen says to my surprise.
I knew Owen and Alexander had been getting along better but I had not expected Owen to admit to trusting the other just yet.
“The pack will not be happy about this. You are to be alpha and your ‘mate’ has a second mate that is a natural enemy of our kind. They will see you as too weak to lead them!” His façade as the welcoming host was slipping away now the more he spoke.
“I believe when the time comes, they will accept the situation. They see in time that there is no danger.” Owen says firmly.
“I suppose we will have to wait and see now wont we.” The mask was back on now. “It was a pleasure to meet you Amelia. I look forward to seeing you again.”
With that the alpha turned and left, his men following behind.
“Well, that was enlightening.” Alexander says once they were gone and the door to my room was closed.
“It was. He did not mention the fact that he knew what I was, even though he must have sensed it when we touched.” I add.
“He must have heard you; I don’t think a wolf in a hundred miles didn’t.” Owens says siting beside me again.
“I don’t think he wants to give the impression that any of these things are a threat to him. But I need to tell you Owen…” He looks to me, and I hesitate. “I think this attack on the pack was planned by your father.”
I say it quick, and I tense as soon as the words are out. I watched his expression carefully, but when he lets out a sigh I could tell, he was thinking the same.
“You already suspected him, didn’t you?” I ask.
He nods.
“When I saw my mother, I knew. Her injuries didn’t make sense. I am just glad my sister is away at school, because she would have been killed, I am sure of it!” He says, his voice cracking slightly at the thought.
“I wanted to warn you about what I had seen in my vision. What your father had done, but it was nothing like this. But I still figured this was his way of getting the same results.” I add.
“What had he done in your vision?” Owen asks.
I took in a deep breath and explained everything I had seen involving his father’s plan, and when I was finished, he stood almost knocking the chair over from the sudden motion.
“What is it?” I ask him.
“Alpha Cole was invited by my father to come next week and offer his daughter as a mate for me to finalize their pack as an ally. He hadn’t even bothered to tell me until I had told him I already found my mate. He told me to end things with you, but I told him I wouldn’t, and I left to join you on your trip to California. He didn’t contact me about it at all while I was gone, so I figured he gave up on his plans. Then the pack was attacked.” Owen said as he paced.
“Then it’s true. He planned this!” I said.
“Yes. If our pack was weakened during discussions of aligning with another pack, they would step in and offer help as a sign of good will. That means Alpha Cole will bring his strongest fighters to help protect our land.” Owen explained.
“That means my father would have an army at his disposal. An army he could turn against us.” Owen says turning to me.
It seemed war was not as far off as I had hoped. An enemy in disguise was on it’s way.
