Chapter 39
“I just want to talk about the food choice for the ceremony! Why can’t you tear yourself away to help me with that?” Owen tried his best to ignore the grating voice of his ‘fake’ mate after she stepped into his house and started demanding he help with their ceremony.
“I don’t need to help you pick out food Brittney. Everyone in the pack enjoys meat, just choose steak or something.” Owen snaps at her.
His wolf was growing even more impatient with the female now that a day had passed, and he had not seen Amelia.
‘She is not our mate! She cannot speak to us like that! And she stinks! What kind of perfume is that anyway?!’ Owen mentally snorted at his wolf Samuel’s anticks.
The wolf was very vocal about his dislike of this woman and never relented to remind Owen not to get too close.
“Owen this is serious! It is a special occasion; we are not serving steak! How about lobster?” Owen glanced at her annoyed.
“You want to buy lobster for the entire pack? Do you know how much that will cost us?” Owen asked her in disbelief.
“You can afford it baby; I know how hard you work.” She says trying to sound seductive moving to sit close to him. “Doesn’t your mate deserve the best?”
She moves slowly and rests her hand on his chest earning a warning growl from him.
“Oh, come on, don’t play hard to get. We are going to be Alpha and Luna soon, why not enjoy it now? You can have a taste of what I can offer you.” She slides her hand slowly down his chest and moves closer.
Samuel has had enough of this female and Owen doesn’t hold back the growl building in his chest. He grabs her firm by the wrists and turns to her with an intense glare.
“Don’t touch me.” He spits out, his voice deep and venomous.
He pushes her arm away making the rest of her move away from him as well, and she lets out an offended gasp.
“What the hell is wrong with you Owen? Huh?! Any male would want me, why are you acting like you aren’t even interest?” She asks with a shriek in her voice.
“We are only becoming mates for the purpose of the contract. I don’t want you. Get that straight right now.” Owen says standing and turning to walk away. “Now leave I want to go to bed.”
“You got to be kidding me! How can you just walk away like that?! I am not going to let you talk to me like that! You have no idea what I am capable of Owen!” She yells at his retreating figure.
‘She has no idea what our mate is capable of! Amelia and Anya could huff her out of existence without breaking a sweat!’ Samuel says puffing his chest out with pride.
“Come back here Owen or swear to the moon goddess I will make your life a living hell!” She yells at him as he climbs the stairs completely ignoring her.
‘Don’t worry female you won’t be around that long.’ Owen let out a small laugh at that.
Samuel was becoming very colorful with expressing his distance for the woman, and Owen found it very amusing.
“Don’t let the door hit you on your way out!” Owen called as he walked out of sight.
He heard a frustrated huff and Brittney’s heels hitting the floor as she stomped toward the door. With a good slam that rattled several of the windows she was huffing down the path back to the pack house. Owen let’s out a breath of relief and quickly pulls out his phone and pulling up the video call feature. He selects the picture of Amelia he took a few days ago. They were lying in bed and she had just woken up and smiled softly up at him. He loved that picture.
“Hello?” Amelia says, but the screen is still dark. “Oh no…how do I do this again?”
He laughs at her cute confusion.
“Alex? How to do I turn the camera on?” She asks.
Owen can’t help the smile creeping on his face and reminds himself that she mentioned last time she had never video chatted with anyone before. Her mom had given her a basic flip phone that could be used to answer her parent’s calls and to get calls from Liam. He had been sure to get her a much better phone as soon as he could, but it was clear she was still learning how to work it.
“Right her love.” He hears Alexander say and suddenly her face appears on the screen.
“Owen! Hi!” She says happily smiling at him through the screen. “Sorry I am still figuring this new phone out.”
He smiles. “It’s ok baby.”
Her face instantly flushes light pink when hearing the pet name, and Owen had said it just to get that exact reaction. She was still shy when her to mates would speak to her sweetly or call her cute names. It was one of things Alexander and Owen both agreed was one of her most adorable qualities.
“How was your day?” She asks sitting back a little, so her face wasn’t so close to the camera.
“Not too bad.” Owen says, trying not to talk about the visitor he had not long ago.
Amelia tilts her head and gives him a knowing look. “I know when you are lying Owen.”
He sighs and drops his head, why did he think he could hide anything from her? She probably could sense his emotions through the bond, even though there was a good distance between them.
“Alpha Cole’s daughter was here a few minutes ago.” Owen says.
“Did she upset you?” Amelia asks softly.
Owen could see the concern in her face, and it amazed him that she was more worried about him and didn’t show a hint of jealousy. She trusted him completely.
“I just don’t like being near her. Her voice and her attitude and her scent….it all aggravates me!” Owen admits.
“Hopefully you won’t have to put up with her much longer.” Amelia says giving him a soft smile.
She was an angel.
“How are you doing baby?” he asks.
She smiles wide and tucks a strand of hair behind her ear. “I’m fine. Alex is taking good care of me.”
Owen smiles. “I’m glad. Are you sleeping ok?”
“I miss cuddling both my boys but yeah I’m sleeping ok.” She says with a shrug.
“She is not.” Alexander says stepping into the frame. “She is having a few nightmares.”
“What? What kind of nightmares?” Owen asks, his face falling to one of concern.
“It’s nothing, ok? I promise.” Amelia says trying to brush it off.
“It’s not nothing baby. What happens in the dreams?” Owen asks.
“She dies.” Alexander says answering for her. “The same way, but what happens before is different every time.”
Amelia keeps her head lowered as Alexander explains.
“How does it happen?” Owen asks turning his eyes to Amelia.
She does speak still, and he can hear a faint sniffle coming through the phone.
“She dies in childbirth.” Alexander says simply, but Owen can see in his eyes the fear he is now feeling as well.
They hadn’t talked about having a family yet, and now that Amelia had been bitten it complicated things even more. There was so much going on that Owen hadn’t even thought about having pups yet. Of course, he wanted as many as possible, but that was before he met Amelia and all that came after.
“Can she become pregnant after being bitten?” Owen asks Alexander.
“It’s rare but possible. And the fact that she isn’t completely vampire would raise the chances higher, but it would be lower than a human woman or a pure wolf. I can reach out to an old friend and see what she can tell me about births by vampires. Amelia is unique though, whatever I find out may not be very helpful.” Alexander says.
“Who is this friend?” Owen asks.
“She was my mentor when I turned. One of the oldest of us, and still in full control. She likes to keep hidden though so it may take some time to track her down.” Alexander explains.
“Ok, well try. I know we have a lot going on, but this is something we should try to figure out as well. Baby don’t worry ok? We will learn as much as we can.” Owen says trying to reassure his mate.
“I’m so sorry Owen.” She says, her voice cracking slightly.
“Hey baby, this isn’t your fault ok? You are such a special person, and if we are able to have kids they are going to just as special as you. But I care about keeping you safe first, so whatever we find out will help us know what to do.” Owen says softly.
“But what if it’s too dangerous for us to have kids?” She asks.
Owen felt a pain in his heart at the disappointment in her voice.
“Then we will find another way. Every child deserves a loving home and family, and there are many children who would be lucky to have you as their mom.” Owen says giving her a soft smile.
She nods and smiles back at him, and watches Alexander wraps his arm around her and hug her.
“I miss you.” She says.
“I miss you too baby. I will come see you in person soon. Try and sleep ok?” Owen says.
She nods and waves goodbye to him.
“I heard back from the guys. They should be here Friday.” Alexander says.
“And you are sure they are up to this? On our terms?” Owen asks for the second time.
“They better be. I may have threatened to kill them if they double cross us.” Alexander says with a smirk.
Owen lets out a huff and a small laugh. “That makes two of us! Watch over our girl.”
“You bet. Hurry and visit so she can sleep peacefully again.” Alexander says.
“I will. See ya man!” Owen says before ending the call.
He lays back on his bed and lets out a sigh. Life had thrown him curve ball after curve ball since Amelia arrived, but he had never been more willing to fight for someone before.
Friday.
They were that much closer to ruining his father’s plans. Then he would rally the pack and ask them to recognize him as Alpha, and he would be able to take his father’s place. He took a deep breath. He needed to be sure he had people on his side though, so he decided that tomorrow he would meet with some discreetly and ask for their support. Even with a few sold members, others would willingly follow if they saw that key members of the pack were supporting him. His father would be stripped of his place but remain a member of the pack. Unless he wished to fight Owen and risk being labeled a rogue.
Owen hoped it wouldn’t come to that but knowing his father…he wouldn’t go down without a fight.
