Chapter 27
(Owen POV)
“What is happening to her?” I ask the pack doctor who is rushing to examine Amelia.
“I-I don’t know! There is no visible sign of trauma or injury. We will have to do some scans.” The doctor sounded panicked as my impatience grew and the scent in the room became thick with my growing anger.
As an alpha I knew I had to be careful, but in the moment, I was scared because Amelia was barely breathing.
“Do the damn tests then!” I yell at him.
The doctor bows his head to me before rushing from the room to get the equipment.
“Owen, you need to breath. You almost took that guy’s head off!” Alexander said from behind me.
I felt my anger boil and I turned and growled a low growl at him. He crossed his arms and looked back at me seeming unaffected, which only made me more annoyed.
“Sorry wolf boy, your intimidation tactics don’t work on me. Now that you got that out, can you relax a little?” Alexander’s lack of grace seemed to work however, as I realized how aggressive I had become.
My wolf was pacing anxiously in my mind, snarling and growling in frustration. I tried my best to shut him out so that I could relax, but it was becoming harder. Being around Amelia has made my more primal nature take over as my wolf’s desire to mate with her grew stronger. In most cases when someone meets their mate, they bond the same day or a day or two later. I had already been around Amelia longer than that, and although I tried to hide it, I was itching with frustration.
As she laid in the hospital bed, motionless, my eyes wandered to the part of her neck that would soon bear her mate mark. My eyes faltered when I saw two fang marks in her neck. The anger I had pushed down quickly began to flare again as I am looking at the bite mark on her perfect skin.
“What did you do?” I asked Alexander through gritted teeth.
I turned to Alexander and his eyes flutter with understand and his mouth began to part, but my hand was around his neck before he could speak a word.
“You bit her.” I growled out.
“I can explain. Ok? She told me to feed from her, but things were intense and in the moment I was no thinking straight and I-I….” My grip around his neck tightened.
I knew how strong he was, that if he really tried, he could escape my grip, but he didn’t try so I held tighter.
“I-I wasn’t worried at the time because she is a wolf, and wolves cannot be changed by a bite.” He says.
“She is half human!” I yelled into his face.
“I swear Owen I didn’t think she was in any danger. We still don’t know if anything will happen!” Alexander now began to push against my hold.
“We don’t know? Look at her! She looks almost dead!” I say letting go of him and pointing to our mate.
“I’m so sorry….” Alexander said, his voice cracking with emotion.
Before I could say anything more the doctor returns with nurses pushing different equipment into the room behind him. Now that I had seen what Alexander had done, I shook my head.
“Doctor, she was bitten by a vampire. Could that explain her current state?” I asked blankly.
All eyes turned to me and then to Alexander, who lowered his head so as not to meet their gaze. The air in the room changed from purposeful panic to complete fear.
“A-a blood beast.” One of the nurses sputters out.
“Yes. But not a dangerous one. He will not harm you.” I tell them.
They look to me once more and with a reassuring nod, they mimicked my action and tried to relax.
“Uh…I have not delt with such a thing before. Since wolves cannot be changed by a vampire bite. If a vampire releases their venom into a wolf it usually acts like a poison and kills the wolf within hours. However, they thrash around and in simple terms go mad first. I am not seeing any of the typical signs of in the young Luna. It’s almost as if she is in a coma.” The doctor explains.
“She is half human, could that be enough to allow her to change?” I ask him.
“She cannot fully change, because half of her is still wolf. Again, I am uncertain since I have never encountered a situation like this. We simply have to wait and see how she does. In regard to the other matter, the pain she said she had before she collapsed is still a mystery. However, she does not seem to be in any pain now, do you still wish for us to run more tests?” The doctor looks to me but give Alexander a quick glance as well.
“No. We will wait on the tests.” I tell him.
“As you wish. I will return to check on her soon.” And with that she and the nurses quickly leave the room.
“You better hope you haven’t killed her.” I say glancing to Alexander over my shoulder.
I take a seat on the other side of Amelia and take her hand in mine. Now we wait. This was the second time seeing her in a hospital bed, but not the only time she has given me a scare like this. I just hoped she was strong enough to pull through one more time.
(Amelia POV)
“Hello?” I call out into the darkness.
I squint my eyes trying to find light, any small amount of light but there is darkness all around me.
“Hello?” I call out again but still no one answers me. “Anaya?”
‘It’s ok Amelia, don’t be afraid.’ Anaya’s voice echoes around me.
I turn trying to find the source of her voice, but I still could not see where she was.
“What’s happening?” I ask loudly.
‘You are changing.’ She says.
“Into what?” I ask her.
‘Your human side is changing, the venom from Alexander is changing a part of you. You are adapting his power, his strength, his youth.’ She says slowly.
“I am becoming a vampire now too?” I ask point blank, not liking the more poetic route she is taking to explain this.
‘Not completely. You are not immortal, but you will be able to live longer than any wolf has. You will have amazing speed, strength and his power.’ She explains. ‘Isa must have hoped that Alexander would bit you. Because with his power along with the white wolf’s power you will become an unstoppable weapon. One that could face any battle and win.’
Of course! Because having the soul energy of all white wolves in my body wasn’t enough to deal with, now I had vampire abilities as well. I had barely scratched the surface of what my wolf abilities and now I was gaining more. More power.
‘I know this may seem like one more problem you have to face, but it is good Amelia. Your human side was too weak to handle to amount of power that comes from being the white wolf. Now your human side will be gone, and you will be strong enough to access that power and more.’ Anaya explains. ‘It’s time Amelia.’
“Time for what?” I ask.
‘Time to wake up, because a war is coming, and it has already begun.’ She says.
I want to ask her what she means but I full a pull as my consciousness and my body are forced together. The war had already begun, and now I had everything I need to fight. With one last push my eyes shot open and I felt it. I felt everything! Anaya had released the hold she had on the powers that had been too strong for me. I could feel it all pulsing through every cell of my body. There was this almost primal urge in my soul that I had to release, and it became so strong that I threw my head back and howled louder than I ever thought I could.
This was not just any howl; it was a message. A battle cry that could be heard from miles around. The White Wolf lives.
