Chapter 18

Amelia

As soon as I put my hand in the dark liquid, I felt a force pull me in. There is nothing but darkness for what feels like forever until suddenly, everything is light. An all too familiar light in a place I’ve come to know so well. Except this is different. There is an iridescent quality to everything which makes it feel like I’m looking at a movie or a dream. When no one seems to notice me, I figure what I’m seeing is indeed a memory of some kind.

“We must choose soon or it will be too late. They will find out what we’ve done.”

“They can not touch us now. Not if they don’t want their slaves dead.”

“They think of humans as replaceable, so why would thy care what we do?”

The three figures turn around and I gasp when I see who they are. The fates…but not as I have come to know them. They look like…monsters. Demons.

“We are more powerful than the gods planned and they will learn as much very soon.” The one that sounds like Amira.

“Indeed. Now we need the finally piece to put everything in motion.”

“She should be here soon. We need to prepare.” The third and tallest one says.

She reminds me of Isa.

The figures in front of me start to twitch and jerk around like they’re having a seizure. Then I see their old forms melt away slowly into the images of the three angelic forms I know.

“She’s here.” Evana says.

A second later, Elena walks in.

“Welcome Goddess. Thank you for coming.”

“I admit the invitation surprised me. Few are asked to meet with the three fates.” Elena says sweetly, almost reverently.

“A true enough fact, but that is because our work is meant to be kept secret. If everyone knew what we could see, they would use it for evil. I hope you understand.” —— says.

“Of course. That makes sense. So how can I be of help to you?” Elena crosses her hands in front of her and waits.

“There have been some troubling revelations recently involving your kind. It will be catastrophic if we do not act. Since you are their Goddess, who better to help save them than you?” Evana says.

Elena’s face morphs into an expression of intense worry. “What will happen to them?”

“They will be wiped out in a war against humans.” Amira says.

“By the moon’s light.” Elena gasps. “What can we do to stop this?”
The fates glance at each other and share a meaningful look.

“We think that one of your people could be chosen to act as a trojan horse and insert themselves in between them and stop this before it starts.”

Elena shakes her head, looking as confused as I feel. “I don’t understand. How can one person take on a role like that?”

“The right someone could be the key. They must be in the right place with the right people at the right time. We have seen who it should be, but we will need help from you to put the final piece into place.” Isa explains.

“Who have you chosen?” Elena asks.

“Her name is Amelia. Come.” The four of them walk into the room where the fates can touch every aspect of a person’s life.

The strings of the past, present and future of every person in this world.

“Here she is.” They tug on the string and in front of them a reflection like water appears with my face in its center. “She has had a hard life, so we will be offering her a chance to make a difference.”

Elena looks at me, but it feels more than that. “Her wolf is weak, ill. I don’t know how she could be strong enough for this sort of task.”

“Then you must give her strength.”

“I do not manipulate the wolves inside my kind. I give them balance.” Elena says, but she sounds like she’s almost ready to agree with them.

“You must. She is the one and will need to be molded into what the wolves will need.”

I watch as the four of them plan everything. Elena was hesitant, but the more the fates spoke to her about how I could change the fate of wolves forever, she became more convinced what they were saying was right. She removed my wolf…the one that had been weak, and replaced it with Anaya. Then…she found Owen. His true mate had died as an infant, leaving his wolf alone for life. Elena connected us so that I would become his mate.

We were never true mates…it had all been arranged! Nothing in my life was real! Oh god…I can’t watch anymore!

I try to push the image away and break whatever hold this force had on me, but it won’t let me do. It forces me to watch it all. Elena helping the fates and them smiling wickedly when she completed the task. They dismiss her and reveal their true selves again and then watch as the ripples of my new life fell into place.

“This will be beautiful. Humanity was a mistake, but we will soon fix that, and be done with the mutants as well. They are a curse we will reverse.” ——says and the three of them laugh.

The war…it was planned by them. They wanted to wipe not only humans but everyone out. Why? Why would they do this?

That is when I’m released from the dream and dropped into the darkness again. In there is where I stay with only the distant sound of voices to keep my company. I’m trapped here. If I stay, then the rest of the world will survive. I was sent to cause the war and destroy the world. I am not a savior…I am distraction hidden beneath hope.

Owen

“What’s happening?” I ask the Elder.

“She is shielding herself.” He says with his eyes fixed in awe at the scene in front of us.

Amelia was released from the black liquid but her body rose and is now hovering above it. The liquid starts to creep up like vines and latch onto her. Now they’ve joined to together with Amelia inside.

“Shielding herself from what?” Alexander asks.

“I do not know. I can not penetrate it with my mind. It is too strong.” He says with his eyes closed as if even as he speaks he is trying to break through.

“We can’t leave her in there.” Alexander says just before he lunges toward the cocoon holding our mate.

He is thrown away by an invisible force.

“We can not break it. Only she can.” The Elder says again. “I do not think she is trying to protect herself. She is protecting us.”

“How do you know that?” Alexander asks with a groan.

“I sensed worry inside her before she created this.” He points to the form Amelia is in. “She must have sensed we were in danger.”

“Her wolf.” Alexander says suddenly. “She spoke to me. She said Amelia was in danger from people she trusts the most. I didn’t understand, but what if she’s protecting us from whoever it is?”

I think it over for a second. “Do you think?”

Alexander nods. “She said she had been sent to us more than once.”

“She was fated to meet you.” The Elder says and I quickly nod.

“That’s what she said.”

He shakes his head. “Then she was right to protect us. Something far worse is happening, but we can not see it.”

“Could you make sense, old man? I’m not in the mood for all your wise man speak!” Alexander yells.

I glare at him, but he ignores me.
“The fates came to her. She has seen what the truth is.” The Elder says.

“How could you possibly know that? You said you couldn’t break through to her.” Alexander reminds him.

“I know because I once met them. They are the ones who told me she would come. They told me I was to help her because a great war was coming and she would be our savior.”

What?

“The fates came to you?” I ask him.

“Why would they speak to you at all, or Amelia, for that matter? Aren’t they supposed to be neutral? They see everything wouldn’t it be unethical to interfere?” Alexander asks.

He has a point there.

“Yes, they are. I do not know why they have stepped in like this, but it does not change that they have.”

“So you think she saw something that could be dangerous to the rest of us and has shut us out?” I ask to make sure I’m following.

“Yes. We can not bring her out of it, but we should try to understand what is happening. I shall convene with the other elders and see if they too met the fates. Perhaps we can gather more information.”

He nods to Alexander and me before turning to Natalia and speaking to her through their mind link.

Alo looks to Alexander and me. “We will bring supplies for you if you wish to remain here.”

“We’re not going anywhere,” Alexander says, and I nod.

Until Amelia wakes up, we’re not leaving her side. We will be her protectors in this world while she is ours in the world beyond.
