Chapter 46
(Amelia POV)
Liam and I looked speechlessly at the man standing in the door of my room. I knew who he was from seeing his face many times before but seeing him now knowing that had all been my imagination made this meeting feel awkward. I felt almost guilty for the things that had happened between us when I would go into these episodes. I had seen our life together, and us starting a family. If he knew all that he would be completely creeped out.
Then he did something I wasn’t expecting, he stalked over to me and leaned down and kissed me. It was not a shy kiss in anyway either, it was a kiss that you would share after not seeing someone for a long time. I found myself not pulling away, which I should have because technically we were strangers. Yet, I couldn’t because it all felt so familiar and right that I was surprised for a moment when my brother pulled Owen away.
My eyes opened slightly as my brother looked at my mate like he was ready to punch him right there in my room.
“Hey man what the hell are you doing?!” Liam asks getting into Owen’s face.
“She is my mate! I can kiss her if I want to!” Owen counter argues, which only makes Liam’s face grow angrier.
“Hey! Hey! None of that in here!” The doctor says getting in between them. “This is a hospital for goddess sack! Show some restraint!”
Natalia had rushed to my side and held me close as protection I guess, but I was too stunned to be afraid.
“Now. Sit!” The doctor says pushing the two men apart.
The doctor squares his shoulders and steps over to the other side of my bed.
“Are you alright? You look a bit upset.” The doctor asks me.
It takes me a minute to tear my attention away from the two men sitting a few feet from me and glaring at each other.
“Uh..yeah yeah I’m fine!” I assure him.
Natalia asks me again, but I assure her that I am fine, and she nods her head accepting my word. Then she stands and walks over to Owen and smacks him in the back of the head. My hand flies up to my mouth in shock. What is going on?
“What the heck is wrong with you Owen? What have you done to this poor girl?” Natalia yells.
Owen’s head drops but he messages the back of it where Natalia’s hand had made contact.
“Do you know what mess this girl has been through because you have been getting inside her head?!” Natalia continues to yell.
“I didn’t know this was happening when I did it!” Owen replies sounding like a scolded child.
“So? You still think it makes it right? She has no idea what’s true and what’s not! She is hurting and you did not help with your little tricks!” What was happening?
“Can someone explain please? Some of us are still out of the loop!” Liam calls out annoyed.
Natali sighs and gives Owen one more scolding glance before turning to Liam.
“Some wolves have other abilities that others don’t. Alpha’s especially can be born with unique abilities. Our idiot of an alpha here has the ability to project images and memories into someone’s mind, among other things. So, if I am guessing correctly, and I am pretty sure I am, he must have been showing Amelia images of members of our pack. That’s why she knows who we are, even though the details are a bit off.” She turns to Owen again and shakes her head.
He looks up at her and then to me. Natalia clears her throat and motions for him to go to me, and he does. He stands slowly and walks over.
“I am so sorry! I had no idea what was happening to you! I didn’t mean to make things worse.” He says his voice begging for understanding.
The thing was, I wasn’t the least bit angry with him. Because even though my head was a jumbled mess now, what he did gave me something to run away to. I was able to imagine a life where we were together, where I was special! He gave me a life, even if it had all been in my head.
He looks to the doctor with concern. “Did I hurt her too much because of what I did?”
The doctor sighs as well. “No, she is confused about what is real and what isn’t. So, she will need help figuring that out, which is why you two cannot be fighting. Liam you are the link to her past, and Owen you are her now and her future. She will need both of you to help her work her way through this. Also, Amelia I want you to see me at least once a week so we can talk about what you have been through. Your black outs could be triggered at any time, so we need to work on learning the signs, and the triggers. Your mental healing is going to be a long road, but we will get you in a good place. Ok?”
I nod. “Ok.”
“Ok, well I will leave you all to talk. And I mean TALK! If I hear any yelling that prevents Miss Amelia from resting, I am kicking you both out, Alpha or not!” Liam and Owen nod in understanding.
Natalia turns to me. “I’ll be just outside. Press that button if you need anything!”
A few moments later and the three of us are alone. Owen looks at me and then at Liam like he isn’t sure what to do or how to start talking. Liam, however, wastes no time jumping into things.
“So, you have been manipulating my sister mind.” He says as a statement not a question.
Owen sighs and sits on my bed but faces Liam. “No of course not! I…about two years ago I started hearing this voice. It wasn’t clear what they were saying because it sounded more like crying, and I knew that the only person who could reach me without me letting them in would be my mate. So, every time I heard the voice I tried hard to listen, and soon I could pick out a few words. The girl was asking for help, actually crying for help. I didn’t know what to do because the connection was so week. So, I tried talking too! I would ask over and over, ‘Where are you?’ but never got a reply. So, I just started talking, about anything and everything just to see if they could hear me.”
“You talked about the pack?” I ask him softly.
He turns to me and offers me a guilty nod of confirmation. “I had just become alpha and I was overwhelmed with everything, but I needed to put on a brave face. So, I didn’t tell anyone how stressed I was, but I could talk to…well you. I even sent memories thinking that would get a reaction, but nothing ever did. I did this for the last two years hoping one day you would recognize someone or a place I showed you and you would find me.”
I wanted to reach out and pull him close. He had been trying to bring us together this whole time, and I had no idea.
“She has never shifted or even spoken of her wolf.” Liam explains.
Owen looks to me. “You have never sensed her?”
I shake my head. “Not that I know of. During my episodes I had a wolf that wasn’t very kind to me.”
“That’s probably why our connection was so weak, and you didn’t know how to reply to me.” He turns his body to me and takes my cut-up hand into his. “I am so sorry I hurt you!”
A shake my head for a second before the headache stops me. “You didn’t know, it’s ok.”
A silence falls over the room again. Liam sighs and stands walking over to the side of the bed where Owen was sitting. He holds his hand out to Owen and gives him a forced smile.
“We got off on the wrong foot. I’m Liam, Amelia’s brother.” Owen takes his hand and shakes it.
“I’m Owen. I’m the alpha of this pack.” They shake hands and then quickly pull away, tension still evident.
“So, you said you are ok with us staying here? Are you sure that wouldn’t be too much trouble?” Liam asks trying to swallow his pride.
“Yes! Of course, you guys must stay! Your mate Olivia lives here, and I am here so you both are welcome!” Owen says with a hopeful tone.
“How do you know about me and Olivia?” Liam asks.
“She is a member of my pack, and you are her mate. She has been talking about you since you guys met. The whole pack knows.” Owen says like it’s no big deal.
Liam’s eyes widen at this news, and I can see his ears turn red. “The whole pack?”
Owen nods. “Yeah! It’s a big deal when a member of the pack meets their mate, and news travels fast around here. When you have mated, you will have a home of your own! We have already begun construction!”
“Construction? O-on a house?” Liam sputters out.
Owen nods. “Yeah, that’s pretty standard here. The mate bond is usually completed before a pair is together for 3 weeks, even less often times.”
“What?” Liam visibly pales at this news and I try my best not to laugh at the way his voice jumped.
He starts to pace nervously. Owen looks to me in confusion. “Did I say something wrong?”
I shake my head. “I think his life just flashed before his eyes.”
