TWENTY-NINE
It was official, Yalda felt like she was in high school again; she was starstruck. She had returned to bed after Jaxon had left, and she had even kept the teddy he bought her on her bed along with her pillows, she had named it Lilac. It was a rather basic name since it had a lilac bowtie but she liked it still. She had even taken a picture of it and had sent it to Jaxon with the caption:
‘His name is Lilac….’
Of course, it hadn’t been long before he had replied with tons of laughing emojis which made her imagine him laughing; the rich sound of his laughter always made her smile. Her gaze remained glued to her screen as she waited for him to send another message, it wasn’t long before he did.
Jaxon
‘Who would have thought it was a ‘he’? I’m officially jealous; he’ll get to spend more time with you than I will. And what’s worst? In your bed!’
She laughed loudly, perhaps even too loudly but she didn’t care. She had come to accept that she wasn’t quite herself with Jaxon; she was better. They had exchanged a few more messages before he apologized and told her he had a thing or two to tend to, she had been a bit disappointed but she pulled her shit together before her feelings went too deep.
Before her feelings went too deep….
What the hell was she even doing with him? What was going on? What were they doing? She wasn’t stupid; she knew no man would ever be so nice to a lady unless he wanted to sleep with her or ask her out, but Jaxon had been chill so far, he hadn’t made any moves or showed any signs that suggested that he wanted to sleep with her, to confirm what Alexander had said or what she had initially suspected.
What if he just genuinely liked her? What if it wasn’t about sleeping with her or asking her out? What if he just wanted to be friends?
That was all good, perhaps even too good to be true. But the real question was; did she want to be just friends? She couldn’t deny that she was attracted to him in a way, she was attracted to his eyes, his laugh, his smell, his voice; literally everything about him dragged her in and she couldn’t help it.
Lying there, facing Lilac, he asked herself what she would do if he tried to kiss her or even take it further. A part of her knew she wouldn’t push him away, the curious part that was so drawn to him, yet the other which was loyal to a fault to Alexander seethed at the thought of another man kissing her.
She groaned quietly as she stirred to her side; she was exasperated, perhaps even exhausted. Alexander was like a cloud, constantly looming over her, constantly casting a shadow over her, she wanted to hate it but she just couldn’t. He was right; their relationship was toxic but she loved it, she loved it so much that she wasn’t sure she could live without the pain he caused her.
Her phone pinged from the nightside and she reached out and picked it up quickly, almost as though she had been anticipating a message, or perhaps she had, perhaps she couldn’t wait for Jaxon to text her again. She blew out a breath disappointedly on seeing it was an unsaved contact; she had been receiving texts all day from her colleagues at the office, all of which had been wishing her a speedy recovery.
Who would have even thought so many people would reach out to the snobby Ms. Harris anyway?
She tapped on the message to display the content, and a short text was displayed. She read quickly:
‘Good Afternoon,
Do get well soon, Ms. Harris.
-Blackwood’
Her eyes almost popped out of sockets on reading the last part. Blackwood? The arrogant Ryan Blackwood had actually texted her? It shouldn’t have been a big deal, but the fact that she had thought they had some sort of unspoken beef going on made it huge; it wasn’t alright for him to go around texting her and making her feel stupid for having picked up a beef with him in the first place.
But if she was being realistic, the text even seemed arrogant. She could almost imagine him haughtily typing in the words, he even had the audacity to add his last name so she would know it was him; he hadn’t done it because he wanted to or because he genuinely cared, he had merely done it to show off in a way.
She rolled her eyes before tossing her phone aside; she was in no mood to the with Ryan Blackwood or any other Blackwood at all. They were a nasty lot, she could still remember the first time she met Maya Blackwood’s late husband, Ethan Blackwood, she had been an intern then, she vividly recalled how his old but almost beady eyes had ogled her lustfully. She had felt like punching him them, or at least glaring at him, but that would have been unheard of.
In short, she had a deep dislike for the Blackwoods and nothing was going to change that.
……….
Dr. R.M
His gaze lingered on the initials inscribed on the door he had been standing in front for about ten minutes now. He hadn’t been here in a long time, it had been four years to be precise, he had kept away from here the since the night Yalda came into his life; it had felt like there hadn’t been any need for him to return, yet here he was.
He knocked on the door, and it wasn’t long before the all too familiar voice of his therapist called out:
“Come in”.
He blew out a heavily breath before reaching out and opening the door, his gaze met with Dr. Richelle Milan’s at once and he saw surprise flicker in her grey eyes. Saying nothing, he stepped in and closed he door quietly, and he waited for her to get over her surprise before he spoke.
“Afternoon, Doctor”. He greeted.
“Alexander”. She said in disbelief. “I wasn’t expecting you”.
He nodded.
He hadn’t expected to return anytime soon.
“Do come in and have a seat, please”. Dr. Richelle said as she stood up and gestured at the seat he was once accustomed to. “I’d say it’s good to have you back but ….”.
Of course, his coming back here meant that something was bothering him. A faint smirk curved his lips. She still had a sense of humor. He walked over to the seat and sat down before she returned to her seat.
“It’s good to see you too, Doctor”. He said.
She smiled.
And an awkward moment of silence stretched between them before she spoke again.
“Are you alright?”. She asked him.
