EIGHTY-FIVE

As always, Yalda tried to ignore the fact that she was being stared at and watched as she stepped out of the elevator and made her way to the exit determinedly. She had gotten to the door and was just about opening it when it opened to reveal Ryan Blackwood. She resisted the urge to roll her eyes; somehow, she had forgotten all about the Blackwoods during her stay at the island. She had forgotten about Maya, she had forgotten about Ryan, his irritating eyes, everything about him.

“Ms. Harris, you’re back.” He said as his gaze raked over her figure quickly.

“I am. Good morning.” She responded. She hated how his gaze always raked over her, she hated how creepily he looked at her.

“Good morning. You look flustered.” He pointed out.

Of course she was flustered, not just that; she was aroused and humiliated. She had just been on her knees in front of a man who had the ability to turn her on with just his eyes. A lot of things were bothering her at the moment and she truly didn’t have the time to have pointless talks with Ryan Blackwood.

“Well, I almost bumped into you.” She told him, that was her excuse for being flustered.

An irritating smirk curved his lips, the sinister look in his eyes told her he didn’t believe her; it made her uncomfortable. She couldn’t help but wonder if he suspected something, or if his bitch of a stepmom had told him everything. He stepped aside and gestured for her to pass.

“See you around, Ms. Harris.” He said simply.

“Thank you.” She forced herself to reply as she walked past him.

She dragged in a deep breath of fresh air the very second she was out of the building. She made her way to the car park where Carl was already waiting for her, offering him a thankful smile, she got into the car and settled down. The drive to the hospital didn’t take long, Carl had told her he’d wait for her since she didn’t intend to take much time, that had been the plan, but on getting there, Dr. Young had felt the need to lecture her on why she diligently needed to take her contraceptives.

“I sent countless reminders.” The older woman was saying.

“I know. I’m sorry, I was very occupied.” She replied. “I still am, and I’d like to get back to work as soon as possible.”

Young narrowed her eyes at her as she shook her head. She had been her doctor for four years now, and four years was enough time to get to know someone on some levels.

“You’ve not been quite the same, Yalda.” She pointed out. “I’d suggest you take a moment to calm yourself and breathe.”

Yalda shook her head, she didn’t need this right now, she didn’t need to be lectured, and neither did she need therapy.

“I really need to get back to work as soon as possible, doctor. Please.” Her tone suggested that the woman did her thing quickly so she could leave.

Blowing out a resigned breath, Young nodded.

“We’ll need to do a pregnancy test first though.” She told her.

Yalda rolled her eyes exasperatedly.

“I’m not pregnant.” She groaned quietly.

How could she possibly be pregnant? She had seen her period two weeks ago, there was no way she could be pregnant.

“You don’t know that.” Young replied. “Let’s do this; it won’t take much of your time.”

She blew out a heavy breath; she truly was exasperated today.

…….

It hadn’t taken long indeed, and Yalda couldn’t believe her eyes as she sat there staring at the pregnancy test result that came back positive. She shook her head immediately; her body was beginning to tremble and her heart was beginning to beat faster.

“No, no it can’t be.” She said to Young. “This can’t be right.”

“I assure you, Yalda, our methods are highly accurate.” Young said to her. She would have congratulated her but the grave look in her eyes told her that the pregnancy was highly unwanted.

“Do it again, try another method.” Yalda said.

Young merely nodded. They had used her blood for the test for more accuracy, but they could also try other methods.

“We’ll do that.” She said. She held her telephone against her ear as she began giving directives on what was to be done next.

But Yalda couldn’t even comprehend what she was saying or respond, she couldn’t bring herself to say a word. Her body was trembling badly now and tears had begun pricking her eyes.

It couldn’t be…

She couldn’t possibly be pregnant; she couldn’t have been stupid enough to get pregnant. What would she do? How would she tell Alexander? How would he react? Just the thought of her being pregnant had upset him so much at the island, what would he do when he learnt she was actually pregnant.

“Are you alright, Yalda?” Young asked her.

She forced herself to nod though it was obvious that she was anything but alright.

“What…what next?” She asked her.

“We run more tests for clarification.” Young replied.

“Let’s get on with it then.”

She could hardly breathe now, she felt almost faint, she was so nervous that she felt nauseous.

“Calm down.” Young said to her, her eyes had softened considerably. She could almost understand why she was like this. “Breathe.”

Yalda shook her head immediately. She didn’t want to calm down, she didn’t want to breathe, she didn’t want to do anything at all, she just wanted the tests done so she could know if she was truly fucked or not.

What would she do if she was truly pregnant? Where would she go from here? She couldn’t possibly be pregnant; she was still so young, she was a working woman trying to build a career and a name for herself, she had a lot t do before she considered settling down and having a child.

She was on the verge of having an anxiety attack and Young could tell.

“Can we get on with it, please?” Her voice was barely a whisper now, her throat felt so tight. She tried not to blink the avoid the tears in her eyes falling. “Please.”

Young nodded.

“Yes, immediately.” She replied.
