FIFTY-ONE

How long had it been since she had been to the office? It probably hadn't been that long, but Yalda realized that she had been away for too long. As always, she felt everyone's eyes on her as Alexander made an entrance with her trailing behind him like she always did.

It wasn't the first time they had arrived at work together, and for some reason, no one seemed to think much of the fact that they arrived together at times and also left together; it wasn't like anyone could ever really think they pretty much lived together.

She felt better today, the fact that she wasn't on her own thinking about her life helped a lot.

"Good morning sir. Welcome back, Ms. Harris." Sara greeted warmly as they passed by her desk.

And though Alexander merely nodded, Yalda pulled on a courteous smile and thanked her before they proceeded into the elevator.

"Are you feeling well enough to take notes at the meeting?" He asked her when the elevator closed smoothly.

She nodded immediately.

"I am." She replied.

She understood that she may have been a bit unwell lately, but he truly didn't have to make it seem like she was dying or something.

"Alright then." He said simply.

"What's been happening in my absence anyway?" She asked him.

He was probably the wrong person to ask to fill her in but she could at least try. He glanced at his watch briefly before his gaze flickered to hers.

"Nothing that I wish to talk about with you." He replied just as the elevator came to a halt. The door slid open and they walked out. "I have a meeting in seven minutes."

She nodded, of course he wouldn't fit her in. Saying nothing more, they parted ways as he proceeded to his office while she syopped at her desk. She set her stuff down quickly and grabbed what she would be needing for the meeting; she was back to work.

Of course, Yalda had always known that Ryan Blackwood was a tad weird, but he seemed to be even more so during the meeting. He kept making eye contact with her and she had been obliged to offer him a courteous smile since he had been kind enough to send to check up on her today.

And when the meeting had been concluded and the conference hall cleared, he had walked up to her and Alexander.

"Ms. Harris, good to have you back." He said to her.

She noticed he completely ignored Alexander's presence. She knew there had always been some sort of tension between the two but she has no idea it has gotten to this.

"Thank you, Mr. Blackwood." She replied awkwardly. What was she to make of this?

He shook his head dismissively.

"There's quite no need for that." He told her.

And all she could do was offer him yet another courteous smile.

"Well, I'll see you around." He said.

"Of course." She once again concluded replied.

And with that, he walked away leaving her alone with Alexander who had been tapping on his phone distractedly. She cleared her throat quietly to get his attention.

"What was that?" She asked him.

He arched a brow questioningly.

She felt like rolling her eyes at him, he was rather exasperating at times. She knew he has noticed Ryan's attitude, she knew something was up.

"He didn't say anything to you at all." She pointed out.

His gaze flickered to hers and she waited for him to respond but he simply gestured at the door. She wanted to press on but decided not to; not here, not now. And though her curiosity continued to eat her up, she waited till they were in the elevator before she brought it up again.

"Are you seriously not going to tell me?" She asked him.

He rolled his eyes exasperatedly.

"You seem to be in a rather chatty mood today." He said.

She nodded. She wasn't going to let this go, something has obviously happened and she knew it has something to do with Maya Blackwood; it was tea and she wanted all of it.

"He wouldn't just ignore your presence like that, not unless something happened."

Knowing she wouldn't let it go, he decided to tell her.

"He's upset about me fucking his step mom." He told her bluntly.

And the fact that he made it seem so casual that he was fucking Maya Blackwood upset her too. She wasn't on Ryan's side, she would never be, but even she was upset that he was sleeping with Maya.

"Justifiably so." She muttered quietly.

"What was that Yalda?" He asked her.

She cleared her throat quietly before responding:

"I said it's understandable that he'd be upset."

He arched a brow at her.

"Do I seem like a kind of person who needs that kind of attitude in my company?" He asked her.

She shook her head.

"No." She responded.

"Good." He said putting an end to the discussion.

Ryan's attitude may have been upsetting, but what was even more upsetting was Alexander sleeping with Maya Blackwood. She couldn't begin to understand why he'd even choose to sleep with her; he had tons of women throwing themselves at him and he chose the widow of his business associate.

"Perhaps he wouldn't have that attitude if you weren't fucking his father's widow." She said quietly. She couldn't stop herself from saying it, she was upset and jealous.

And she hadn't expected him to suddenly grab her and back her against a wall.

"Be very careful of what you say to me, Yalda." He warned, his voice was calm but the reproachful look in his eyes told her he was irritated.

There was something about being backed against the wall by him, it made her feel smaller than she was, and it reminded her of how intimidating he could be.

"Do you understand?" He asked her.

Her throat clenched almost achingly but she forced herself to nod.

"I do." She replied.

"Good." He said.

He released and backed away from her just as the elevator came to a halt, and as the door opened smoothly, he gestured for her to head out.
