FIFTY-SIX

The day had proceeded slowly, and Yalda had tried her best to function as efficiently as she could while trying not to think of all that had been happening lately. Alexander had asked her to cancel all his appointments and turn away anyone who came to see him for the rest of the day.

Of course, she had seen it coming, she knew he wouldn't be able to function proper in such a wretched mood. It was a miracle that she was still functioning, she didn't mean to compare her trouble with his, but to some extent, she felt she had every right to be as upset as he was.

They had both lost their parents tragically, and they had both obviously suffered from emotional neglect at some point in their lives. And she was still suffering, she was still aching from everything, she was unhappy yet she couldn't find it within her to want to walk away from the toxicity of it all.

Her gaze flickered to the elevator as it pinged softly, her brow arched slightly as the doors opened to reveal Maya Blackwood, she watched the irritable woman make her way over to her desk in elegant and confident steps.

Her throat clenched slightly as her gaze subtly raked over her quickly; she was flawless, she was lacking in nothing at all.

"Mrs. Blackwood." She greeted as courteously as she could when Maya got to her desk.

"Ms. Harris". Maya replied. "Is Mr. Monroe in?"

Yalda nodded.

"He is." She replied. And she was about to explain that he wasn't entertaining appointments today but Maya spoke first.

"Good. I'll just go in." She said.

Yalda shook her head. She was filled with so much dislike towards the woman.

"All of Mr. Monroe's appointments have been moved to tomorrow." She told her. "I'm afraid you won't be able to see him today."

Maya's perfectly carved brow arched questioningly.

"Well, Ms. Harris, I do believe Mr. Monroe wouldn't mind making some adjustments to see me." She said.

Yalda tried her possible best to keep her smile in place.

"I apologize for any inconveniences this may cause you." She said to her. "But I am only conveying Mr. Monroe's message."

Couldn't the woman take a hint that she was unwanted here? Couldn't she leave quietly?

"Why don't you call Mr. Monroe and tell him I would like to speak with him." Maya said, she was clearly irritated now.

At least that made the both of them.

"I'm afraid I can't do that." She replied.

Maya's eyes narrowed sharply and she stepped closer to her desk.

"I wasnt asking, Ms. Harris." She said, her voice had dropped an octave.

Yalda almost shrugged.

"I didn't think you were." She replied.

Maya chuckled humorlessly.

"Such audacity." She said in disbelief. "Don't tell me those rumors about you and Mr. Monroe have gotten into your head."

So she wanted to be petty? She wouldn't indulge her.

"First things first, Mrs. Blackwood, I do not work for you, and I am not obligated to carry out your instructions; especially not when they go against instructions given by someone whom I do work for." She told her. "And secondly, you bringing up those rumors is highly unprofessional."

Maya's eyes flared and she glared daggers at her.

"You must really think yourself a big shot huh?" She asked her. "Do you understand whom you're dealing with?"

So she thought she could scare her with her threats? She wished they weren't in some bloody office setting, she wished she could tell the shameless woman a thing or two of what was really on her mind.

"Is there anything else you would like to inquire about, Mrs. Blackwood?" She asked her, completely dismissing what she had said.

"You'll be sorry for this." Maya said.

And with that, she turned around and began walking, but instead of heaidng towards the elevator, she headed towards Alexander's office. Yalda watched quietly as she angrily opened the door and barged in.

She sat there for a couple of seconds while trying to calm herself before she pushed her seat back and stood up. She made her way to Alexander's office with controlled and confident steps. And on getting there, she heard Maya complaining bitterly.

"She has a nasty attitude; I think it's unwise to keep her around." She was saying. "How dare she?"

Her gaze flickered to Alexander's and she found him leaning back in his chair seeming completely uninterested in what Maya was saying; he wasn't even looking at her. His dull eyes told her he was completely exhausted.

He was exhausted and Maya wouldn't stop rambling, she just wanted to put an end to her drama. She cleared her throat quietly to get their attention.

Maya spun around to face her angrily while Alexander's gaze flickered to hers.

"There she is." Maya seethed.

Alexander blew out a breath before shaking his head.

"I apologize for Ms. Harris's attitude; she was only following my instructions." He said to Maya. "And like she told you, I will not be seeing anyone today. Let's talk about what you wanted to discuss tomorrow."

Maya's eyes widened in slight shock, and her gaze flickered from Alexander's to Yalda's, as then back to Alexander's.

"So I'm to just overlook her disrespect?" She asked Alexander.

He shook his head.

"I'll take care of it." He replied dismissively.

Maya stood there breathing heavily as she glared daggers at Yalda, saying nothing more, she stormed out angrily and Yalda stepped aside to give her more space. And it was only when she was gone that she spoke.

"It seems your friend knows nothing about being professional." She said.

"And it seems you cannot control your attitude towards her because of our relationship." He replied.

Yalda shook her head as she chuckled humorlessly. Was he really going to try to lecture her about her attitude towards Maya Blackwood?

"If she thinks I have an attitude now, she best not meet me outside the office." She told him.

He blew out yet another breath before letting his head lead against the headrest of his seat.

"I don't have time for this. Please return to your desk." He said.

She would have gladly left quietly, but she was very aware that he still hadn't had anything to eat, and it was passed 3pm already.

"Would you like to eat something now?" She asked him.

"No." He replied.

"You haven't had anything to eat all day." She reminded him.

His gaze flickered back to hers and the look in his eyes told her he was in no mood to repeat himself.

"Yalda, return to your desk and don't come back till I call for you." He told her.

Her throat clenched slightly but she nodded. He wanted to be this way? Fine.

Saying nothing more, she turned around and walked out irritatedly.
