Chapter 33
"Hmm... you... know... in this world, words fly faster like the air... you know what I mean... hmm... I can't say but I heard your husband complaining at the station the other day... so... that's how I know... so how... are you feeling?" Jeffrey smiled sipping the cold drink into his mouth
"Thanks for asking... I'm fine now and by the way.... hmm... sorry to ask... what were you doing at the station that very day?" She continues to stare at him like an investigative reporter doing his job.
"What all this question Jenni... Are you alright?" Jeffrey found it fishy as he yelled at her but quickly controlled himself.
"Anyway... I had a problem with my landlord so I went there the other day to lay a complaint...You know... I have been paying my rent but all of a sudden, he kept asking me for rent that I have already paid... I even showed him the receipt but he still refused, saying it was a forged receipt... So that very day when Dean rushed to the station crying, I was there... he didn't notice me and all that was bothering him was you... thank God you are safe now" Jeffrey talks with confidence as staring at Jennifer who has been staring at him.
"Wow... thanks for your consent so how did you know that I'm back... let me be straight please... is not that I don't trust you but of all the contact I have on my list, you were the first to call" She was still afraid to drink the chill red wine since she has found it difficult to trust Jeffrey anymore.
"Damn... I called you to gist and now you are investigating me... now I know I'm a bad person for trying to reach you" His mood and tone changed immediately, making Jennifer feel pity for him.
"I'm sorry for whatever might have happened to you but I called you, morning, afternoon, night since the day I saw Dean in the station... I was surprised that your phone was reachable because ever since it was saying not reachable...I'm a bad person now... and I'm sorry for checking up on you who has been my partner in work..." Tears began to roll down his eyes while Jennifer offered him a napkin from her pocket.
She stared at him again but felt pity for him so she apologized for everything and started drinking the wine.
"I'm sorry for interrogating you... I know you care about me and I'm so confused to think about it ... I have been so busy lately and I can't think clearly, I'm sorry... Please can we discuss the reason why we are here now?" She drink the wine slowly and continued to stare at the scar in Jeffrey left hand
' Why does that mark look familiar... I know I have seen it somewhere' She whispers to herself in silence and continues to stare at the scar
"No... it's fine... you can continue... I know you don't trust me... what is the next question" He stood up from the chair and walked straight to the waiter, collecting another chilled wine from him.
"I'm sorry... Aww.... can't you forgive me" Jennifer stood up walking up to him and rubbing his cheek, trying to seduce him? This made Jeffrey feel relaxed and sat comfortably while smiling.
"my mum is ill... I mean very ill... chronic condition right now..." He looked aside and his voice lowered while Jennifer continued to stare at him in shock.
"What... Your mum is sick? And you are here drinking... enjoying yourself...Are you mad... " She yelled and stood up to Jeffrey making him look her in the eyes but he threw his face away again.
"I've been so much lately and I don't have the money for her treatment...I'm just confused over here" Jeffrey's voice still lowered while looking sideways with Jennifer standing in front of him.
"Are you mad? what is wrong with your mum that you can't handle... you don't have money for her treatment but this is your third wine here in this restaurant... Are you normal? Is the money for the wine not useful for your mum's treatment? By the way... what is even wrong with your mum... don't tell me you will just let her die in the hospital" Jennifer felt tempted to beat the hell out of Jeffrey but she controlled herself by rooming around the restaurant with her loud voice.
"It's not something that I can handle... since Dean sacked me... I have been at home, sleeping and watching a film... how do you want me to have that kind of money for her bill... There is no source of income, Jenni... I'm frustrated and pained in my heart" He stood up and yelled back at her creating a scene in the restaurant.
"How much is the bill... That you can't pay???" She yelled back at him as everyone in the restaurant paused while staring at them.
"1 million dollars... 1 million dollars Jennifer... how the hell do you want me to get that money from... everyone hates me and no one agreed to even lend me the money... What do you want me to do Jennifer... What should I do? He yelled back at her in anger as tears began to drip from his eyes. Jennifer froze the moment she heard the amount and was unable to speak.
"Come..." She dragged him calmly to his seat and apologized to everyone for the scene created.
"I'm sorry for raising my voice on you... I'm sorry and I pray nothing happens to your mum but by the way... let's find a solution to the money" Her calm voice made tears begin to roll down in Jeffrey's eyes as he bows his head on the table and cleans his tears.
"Umm...Ummm." Jeffrey sniffed, cleaning the tears in his eyes and looking at Jennifer with his eyes covered in tears.
"I'm deeply sorry, Jeffrey but let's look for a solution before the days run out" She begged again while offering Dean a glass of wine to ease his temper.
"Hmm... I don't know... and that is why... I have been calling you... I think maybe you can help me since you are closer to Dean....you are my only hope... Jennifer and it doesn't work... I'm done in this life... I'm done... Jennifer..." He cried heavily again and deep down, he's happy for putting on a great show.
"Oops... this is a difficult task for me right now... you know now that I was kidnapped and I have just been released...I don't know what this will look like but don't worry I'll try my best... whenever you get the chance to talk to the doctor... tell him... you'll pay and don't worry, we'll do something about it..." She folded her hands begging Jeffrey... She even called the waiter and paid for all the wine... and whispered to him not to sell any wine to this young man again because of his condition.
"Thanks... I appreciate it but I'm with a little cash here that will be okay for the wine... I wanted to make you smile" Jeffrey smiled a bit but still with the fake tears covering his eyes.
"Make me smile? By paying for the wine? you are silly you know that" Both of them laugh slowly... " Your mum is on the sick bed thinking of how to survive and you are here saying, you want to make me smile... let me talk to you... there is no greater happiness when you are with your mum... forgot I told you, I and my mum are having a little issue but I can't feel those love, shout, pain from her and this make me miss her every day... So if I were you, you should start thinking of how to pay for the bills and forget about all this drinking habit for now" She advised, staring at Jeffrey and watching him clean his tears slowly.
"But you are the only hope I have right now... I'm certain, if you fail me, I might end up committing suicide but I'm positive anyway" I smiled at her as I regain myself from her warm and touching heart
"you won't understand... not that I can't tell Dean or I can't collect the money from him...the thing is he paid some ransoms for me to be released and currently, he is thinking of how to replace the money but don't worry. I'll talk to him for you" She breathed in gently with the wine in her hand and responded slowly.
"Ransom? Why? how much is it...and what the hell happened to you?" He was provoked but each time he raised his voice, Jennifer used her hand movement to calm him down.
"6 Million dollars... and you know it is not easy to have up to six million dollars and that's what I'm thinking right now" She whispers to her slowly.
"What? Who the hell will pay such a ransom? What is happening... I'm out of here... damn... it's too much... in a world like this? No... it's not possible" He yelled out loudly making people stare at him and leave the restaurant in anger.
