Chapter 19
Heather's POV:
It was getting a little dark and Edwyn offered to drive me home. But I refused his help. I didn't want Tina to come after me again.
Passing an alley, I seemed to hear strange noises. I was a little curious and wanted to go back to take a look again. There was an uneasy feeling in my heart, like a warning for danger, and I gave up the idea of going back.
When I got home, my foster parents nagged me a few times about how late they thought I was back. I didn't do much explaining. After dropping off my stuff, I put the pizza I was going to have for dinner in the oven and started cleaning up the house.
I hadn't been home in five days, and the house had long been a mess, with trash everywhere. My adoptive parents had to clean the cafe and didn't have the energy to clean the upstairs housing. A jar of dip had fallen on the floor and was moldy, and they didn't clean it up.
In order to get money to leave here as soon as possible, these two days I also found some odd jobs on the street, the weekend was very full and busy.
Two days later, on the way to school, I finally had time to take out my phone. It was then that I saw the message from Edwyn and a few missed calls, and I felt a pang of guilt.
I can't believe I forgot to send Edwyn a message!
I sent Edwyn a message back, even though I was about to arrive at school.
Just after sending the message, my phone suddenly rang and Edwyn actually called me.
After a moment's hesitation, I picked up the phone and asked suspiciously, "What's up? Edwyn, what's the emergency?"
"Thank God, that's great! Heather, it's great that you're okay!" Edwyn's voice sounded very excited.
I think Edwyn was only too worried about me, which made me feel even more sorry for myself and explained guiltily, "Edwyn, I feel so sorry. I had chores to do when I got home and forgot to get back to you."
"It's okay, I'm glad you're okay, it was horrible!" Edwyn said in fear.
"What's wrong with you, Edwyn, did something bad happen to you?" I asked suspiciously.
"Someone died in school!" Edwyn lowered her voice and said.
I stared in shock, not yet reacted, and listened to him continue to lower his voice and said, "The dead are the ones who surrounded Aemon that day, died on their way home."
I was too surprised to speak, and a cold sweat broke out behind me... Did Aemon do this?
"Hello? Heather, Heather, are you still there?" Edwyn called my name eagerly from the other side of the phone.
"Oh, I'm still here, Edwyn," I said, swallowing a few times and slowly moving forward.
"How did you get this information? Did you call the police?" I asked Edwyn.
"It was Principal Smith who told me, and he called me again when I got home, and I told him about those guys trying to beat up Aemon. About a day later, Principal Smith called again and told me the news and that the police were investigating the incident." Edwyn said back.
I couldn't help but frown and continued to ask Edwyn, "Have the police investigated it now?"
"We don't know yet, but the principal said there's something weird about this case. We're all supposed to be investigated when we get to school later." Edwyn said.
"We? Who all is there?" I asked.
"You, me, and Tina and Aemon. heather, I'm sorry, you probably don't want Tina to know about this, but I'm afraid to hide it from the police, so I'm telling them everything." Edwyn whispered.
I sighed softly, feeling some bitterness, now Tina must hate me even more. But Edwyn didn't do anything wrong either, and I wouldn't dare hide it from the police if it were me.
Now I just hope this doesn't get to my adoptive parents.
"It's okay, we'll be fine, Edwyn," I reassured Edwyn.
When I arrived at school, I was indeed called to the principal's office to do an investigation.
Principal Smith looked anxious, he had a pipe in his hand and was stopping to stuff it with tobacco. None of the other three had come to school yet, and I was the first one to be investigated.
"Hey, go inside and watch your mouth!" Principal Smith said with a grim look in his eyes as he stared at me, withered strands of white hair fluttering around his face like a ghost from a horror movie.
I shrank my neck, gave him a timid look, and whispered, "I know."
After that, I quickly closed the door and went into the office.
The policeman sat on the couch used by the principal to entertain guests, with two smoking cups of coffee on the coffee table and a separate stool in front of it.
"Hello, little girl, are you Heather-Blythe?" The policeman who asked was a middle-aged man with a neatly trimmed black beard on his lips, and he must have been about the same age as my adoptive father, though he looked a little more spry.
"Yes, officer. I'm Heather-Blythe," I said, nodding to them.
Next to the middle-aged officer there was a young officer, that must have been a trainee, who was taking notes on what I said with a pen and a book.
The middle-aged officer pushed away his coffee cup, spread a pile of photos on the coffee table and asked me with a serious expression, "Do you know these four people? Don't lie to the police."
"Of course, I'll tell you all I know." I said nervously.
"Well, look at the pictures." The middle-aged officer said.
I set my eyes on the coffee table photo and I thought I must look closely.
But I just took a look and almost threw up in disgust. It was a picture of several corpses, and some incomplete ones at that. Their heads and limbs were separated from their torsos, and their torsos were covered with violent and bloody wounds, sort of like those caused by sharp claws.
In one photo, the body's head was next to the torso, and there was a scarlet mass on the ground that appeared to be the tongue ......
After the thought came to me, my stomach lurched and I quickly ran to the trash can. Because I hadn't eaten breakfast this morning, I only vomited up some sour water.
"How are you feeling? Have some coffee." The middle-aged officer handed the coffee to me.
I gave him a look and shook my head slowly, "No, officer, I'll just take it easy."
"Heather, we need to get this matter investigated as soon as possible." The middle-aged officer said with an expressionless face and passed the coffee forward again, "I haven't had it yet, have some and then take a closer look."
I had to take the coffee and take a sip, and the bitter taste spread immediately in my mouth.
Forced to hold back the strange taste in my mouth, I again cast my eyes on the photo, this time I focused on their hair color, skin tone, and clothes.
Because their five senses have become indistinguishable, I can only look at them from these aspects.
Upon confirmation, I immediately averted my eyes and said to the middle-aged officer, "I think I've seen them, I saw them in front of the school last week after school."
The middle-aged officer immediately squared his body and looked at me seriously, "What did you all say? Or what did you do? Was there a conflict."
Next, I told the officers everything that happened that day. They asked me many more questions, so many that I was a little confused before they finally let me go.
When I left the principal's office, I saw Tina and Edwyn waiting outside, and Principal Smith was chatting with them with a kind face.
Edwyn's attitude seemed respectful, while Tina looked a little impatient. At the sight of me coming out, she gave me a grim look in her eyes.
I think if it weren't for Edwyn being next to her, Tina would not have stood there obediently listening to Principal Smith and just glaring at me.
But now I have a bigger question in my mind - why hasn't Aemon come yet?
