Twice Beaten, Thrice Shy
Aliyah's POV
In the few weeks that Elena was out of the pack, everything was back to being perfect except that Devon was detaching daily. He was never like this until our relationship became public.
I knew no one had really given a shit about Elena so tongues won't wag that my man rejected my sister for me. He was looking lost again and even the wedding preparations were now left for me as a duty to handle.
"Devon? Are you even paying attention to anything that is coming out of my mouth?" I asked him, he had dazed out of the conversation a few minutes ago. I had noticed it and waited to see if he would regain himself but he didn't.
"I am. I'm listening to you, babe. Keep talking." He said with a frustrated look on his face.
"Why have you been acting so cold and distant, of late? I don't enjoy having you looking so uninterested in anything that has to do with us." I complained bitterly, even his apologies no longer sounded sincere.
"What do you want from me? I have done everything you have asked of me. Why can't I just have a moment of peace with you around anymore?" He snapped at me and I was shocked.
He has never snapped at me before now, he always obeys and apologizes for any slight thing I complain about.
"Devon, you are acting like you don't want this? Have you fallen out of love with me?" I cried but he stood up and made to leave the room.
"Look, I'm not cut out for this bullshit today." He said and I snapped.
"Why the fuck are you doing this? If you never wanted any of this in the first place, then why did you do all that?" I yelled at him.
"She was truly my mate. That day when she hid in my room, I already scented her and my wolf wanted to so badly mate with her." He yelled back at me, his words hitting me like a bullet from a sniper's rifle.
"You don't really mean that, do you?" I asked him, shocked that he was making the revelation now.
"I do. So forgive me for throwing away my mate and having to deal with the pain and sense of loss that comes with it. Even though I was the one that rejected her, she was my mate and I wasn't fully prepared to. She doesn't know about all of these pains because she has no wolf." He fired at me.
The weight of his words made me fall down and I struggled to pick myself up. He didn't even flinch, neither did he offer to help me up. He merely stood there, casting a disapproving look at me.
"You, Devon, as an alpha of this pack, Omnidom, you wanted to consider a wolfless werewolf as a Luna?" I questioned him.
"No... I'm saying you are not giving me enough time to heal from the rejection." He explained, his voice calming down.
"You were yelling at me just now. What changed? Why are you suddenly becoming calm?" I asked him.
"Look, I'm sorry if I took my frustration out on you. I didn't mean for my words to come out that way. You know I love you and I want to spend the rest of my life with you as my Luna. Don't fret about anything, just let me get through this, okay?" He asked and walked back to where I stood, kissing me on the cheeks and forehead dryly.
"Did you try to find her?" I asked him, watching his eyes closely. We have been together since childhood but had to make it a secret so that people don't try to come between us by telling us to wait for the mating bond to confirm what we felt for each other.
"I...I didn't." He lied, it was obvious that he was lying and my heart broke. He has also never lied to me before which made it all worse. The tears gathered in my eyes and I felt like I had lost even though I thought I was winning.
"You are lying. What did you find out? Do you want to save her from the abject poverty that she is wallowing in?" I asked him, angry with Elena for trying to ruin my love life for me even without her being present.
"She is going to be the Luna of Red Blood Pack. She isn't in poverty. She is Alpha Wesley's bride-to-be. From what I heard, she is his mate." He said with a look of disbelief on his face.
It was one thing to find out that you failed and your enemies failed also, but finding that you failed and tried to make them fail too. But, they don't, instead, they come out at the top and feel worse than losing a loved one. I was expecting to hear that she was dead or starving or anything else that didn't point out that she was having a great life.
Instead, she was the bride-to-be of the strongest Alpha in the entire wolf kingdom and the Luna of the biggest pack also. My heart couldn't take the blow and seeing how interested Devon was in her, I needed to do something drastic before I lost on every side.
"That's not true?" I said in shock, no one should want someone as dirty-looking as Elena. She hardly wore dresses and always wore boy clothes. He didn't seem to mind that much now, seeing that the moon goddess had decided to laugh at our plots as a source of entertainment to her.
"It is. I got to know about this three days ago. My wolf has been mourning the loss of its mate. So be more understanding by letting me have a breathing space whenever I'm around you. Also, can we shift the wedding forward?" He asked and I knew it was now or never.
"I am pregnant Devon," I said, my voice low but audible.
