88: Where are the girls?
**Zion pov**
By the time we reached the cabin, it wasn’t just dark outside, it was pitch black and I had to rely on my senses to guide Kala back.
We stopped at the treeline, where first, I scanned the surroundings and made sure there was no danger nearby. Then, I turned to Kala, cupped her cheeks and whispered, “I need you to climb, my love. Can you?”
Kala brought her shaking hands up to her face and covered mine with hers. “I’m a cat, of course I can climb,” she whispered. “But I don’t want to. Zion, I don’t want to leave you to possibly face him alone again.”
I shook my head. “You must. If it’s really him, you must hide and ensure you and the baby are safe. I can still survive him, but our child..” I couldn’t finish the sentence.
Just imagining a life in which my mate and our unborn child could be harmed was far too painful, let alone possibly living the scenario.
I seriously didn’t care what I had to do and how many beatings I had to take for as long as I knew that the two of them would be safe. Fuck it, Kala knew that I would give my own life if it meant they got to live.
Before her, I had no idea that love as selfless as the one I felt could exist. And now that I had her, that I had the taste of the love she offered, I knew I’d rather die than lose it.
Letting out a shaky breath, I leaned closer, pressed my forehead against hers and closed my eyes. “I need you to stay away for a bit, okay? Not too far, just close enough you hear me call if there’s no danger but far enough you can escape him if shit goes down. Can you promise me that?”
“I promise,” Kala whispered, her voice breaking. “I’ll stay safe and keep our baby safe too. But you need to promise me that you’ll live. Zion, I can’t do this without you.”
I knew what she meant - the pregnancy, the giving birth and later raising our baby. I didn’t want her to do it alone either, I wanted to be there for her every step of the way.
Without saying another word, I tilted my head and pressed my lips to hers. A quick, almost chased kiss was all I could afford with the little time we had, but I made sure to force as much of love into it as I could.
Then, just as quickly, I pulled away and stepped back. “Climb,” I said quietly and waited.
Kala didn’t say a word anymore, mouthed a weak “I love you,” and turned on her heel. I watched how she climbed the nearest pine with grace only cats had and then leaped from branch to branch, slowly increasing the distance between us.
Once she was fully out of my view of vision, I spun around and ran towards the cabin. As I reached the door and gripped the handle, a cold shiver ran down my spine when I heard more of that awful sound, like trees falling, but now it was closer.
I swung the door open and stepped into the dark cabin, screaming, “Aife!”
Nothing, not a sound or reaction. My eyes frantically scanned the dark room - I tried to hear something, even a movement would be good, but I doubted that I could catch anything louder than my heart beating in my chest.
Just as I took a step forward, the door opened behind me and Jonathan stepped inside, followed by his bloody Alpha.
“Where’s Aife?” I asked, still not sure if my fear was warranted.
“Upstairs, sleeping,” Jonathan replied, but judging by the tone of his voice, he wasn’t as sure.
Kala and I had left for that walk a good while ago and to be honest, I had no idea that Jonathan had left the cabin too. If I had known, I would have insisted to stay nearby so at least someone would be around Aife if she needed us.
Before I could say a thing, Jonathan bolted upstairs to check on her, leaving me alone with Killian.
He cleared his throat and took a step closer, but I only raised my hand and growled, “don’t.” I knew what he was about to tell me and right now, I wanted to pretend it wasn’t true.
“He’s coming,” Killian said it anyway, fucking flipping my world upside down.
“I was doing fine without you saying that, asshole,” I snarled at him.
Killian only shrugged and looked around. “We have a little bit of time, my men will hold him back as much as they can. Where’s your mate, Beta?”
“She’s safe,” I said, balling my fists, willing my heart to slow down a little before I did something equally as stupid as it would be satisfying like punch the fucker in the face.
From the corner of my eye, I could see the corner of Killian’s mouth twitch like the bastard found this situation amusing.
Thank fuck he had enough brain power to understand that this was no time to joke around, so instead of torturing me with more of his annoying voice, he just remained silent and we both stood there, waiting for Jonathan to come back downstairs.
After what felt like hours, he finally did. The problem was that he returned alone.
My heart instantly sunk as I realized what it meant - Aife wasn’t there.
“Where the fuck is she?” Jonathan asked as soon as he reached the bottom of the stairs, his eyes wide, hair messy like all he had been doing upstairs was grab and tug at it. “I checked every bit I could think of, even that bloody crawlspace I found behind the bed, but she’s not there. And neither is your mate, Zion. Where are the girls?” He snarled and took a step towards me.
To my surprise, Killian stood in front of me and crossed his arms. “Calm down, Jon, Zion has nothing to do with this. Am I right, Beta?” Killian asked without looking at me.
I nodded althigh Jonathan couldn’t see me. “Kala is safe, I told her to stay hidden until there’s no danger around us. We were out on a walk for a bit, we needed time alone to talk and when I heard that crash, we came back right away. By the time I stormed into the cabin, Aife was already gone.”
