5: You ashamed of him?

**Killian pov**

While his reaction was a little dramatic, I wouldn’t have expected anything else from Kayson.

Rolling my eyes, I brought Jonathan’s hand to my lips and gently kissed his knuckles. “Can you give us a moment, please? I need to talk to my best friend. No pack business, just some private stuff. Please?” I asked gently.

Jonathan looked taken aback, but so did Kayson. The difference between the two was that Kayson was the only one who commented.

“Holy shit,” he whispered, eyes widening by the second. “You’re whipped dude, completely smitten. Never, and I repeat, never in my fucking life had I thought I’d see the infamous Alpha Killian kissing hands and pleading like a puppy. Shit, I need to write this down,” he fumbled for his phone and started typing something while I only rolled my eyes.

Jonathan didn’t even pay attention to Kayson’s behavior. He smiled at me, stood up and leaned down to press his lips for my forehead. “I’ll be in the hall then. Call me if you need me.”

I nodded, still savoring the feeling of his lips against my skin, although he had already pulled away.

This chosen mate thing was making me weak in my knees already. I could only imagine how powerful it would be once we went through with the ritual and the Goddess blessed our union.

Shit, I couldn’t wait. Just imagining the mate pull already sent shivers down my spine, but actually feeling it.. Man, Kayson was right, I was fucking whipped.

Before leaving, Jonathan made sure to glare at Kayson while Kayson only grinned much wider and raised his hands in mock surrender. “No funny business, your man is safe with me.”

I was insanely grateful that Jonathan chose to ignore Kayson. Sometimes, my best friend was too much even for me, let alone others.

When the door behind Jonathan clicked closed, Kayson turned to me with a wide grin. “Chosen mate, huh? Never pegged you for someone who’s into dicks. Heh, pegged, nice pun.”

“You’re so childish,” I said and rolled my eyes, then pointed at the chair Jonathan just sat in. “Come, sit down, we need to talk.”

Kayson hesitated for a bit, clearly feeling the tension behind my words.

As great as he was as a Beta when he truly held onto his responsibilities, Kayson also was exceptionally good at avoiding the hard conversations and escaping slippery situations.

Well, not this time. I refused to let him off easily. I needed answers and I needed them as soon as possible.

Once he was seated, I didn’t waste time beating around the bush. “So, let’s talk about the Milly situation.”

Kayson groaned and ran a hand through his hair, clearly agitated to hear her name. “There’s nothing to talk about, Killian. It was shit, is shit and forever will remain shit. I swear, the moon Goddess has it out for me, pairing me with a bitch like that.”

“Since you’re getting so worked up, I’d assume there’s some development. It’s alright, I won’t pester too much. However, there’s something I have to tell you.”

Kayson leaned closer to me in his chair, resting his elbows against his thighs. “Yeah? Well, I’m all ears, man.”

I cleared my throat and nodded. “Whatever is going behind the scenes, I need you to find out. By any means necessary. Milly’s father has been trying to convince me to marry her. Something’s fishy and I need to find out what exactly.”

Kayson whistled low, seemingly unaffected by the fact that his so-called mate was offered to me as a bride.

He stayed silent for a moment, then hummed. “I suppose they don’t know about you finding lightsabers exciting now, right?”

Of course, in true Kayson fashion, he had to add in the jab. But, instead of getting offended, I chuckled and shook my head, “no, my friend, they don’t know about Jonathan. And truth be told, I’d rather prefer to keep it a secret for now.”

Kayson frowned at me. “Why? You ashamed of him?”

His voice was laced with accusation and disdain, but that only made me grin wider.

Kayson didn’t understand that yet, but he was already showing his protective side, standing up for his Alpha’s chosen mate.

To put his mind at ease, I shook my head. “Not ashamed, never ashamed. I need him safe at all costs and for as long as I’m trapped in this bloody room, I can’t protect him.”

Kayson’s frown only deepened. “So get out of the damn room then.”

“I can’t,” I muttered, not really wanting to explain myself.

“Why?” He demanded.

I closed my eyes and let out a deep, heavy breath before I whispered, “Jonathan won’t let me until he’s sure I’ve healed enough to leave.”

Kayson remained silent for all but a couple of seconds before he burst out laughing at my words, his head thrown back as he slapped his thigh like this was the funniest thing he had ever heard.

“Oh, man,” he panted after he calmed down a little, wiping tears off his cheeks. “Damn, you’re absolutely whipped, like I said. Shit, I didn’t think it’s that bad, wow.”

“If I keep rolling my eyes at every stupid thing you say, I’ll have them stuck at one point,” I grumbled, crossing my arms and ignoring the shooting pain that still spread through my ribs.

“Alright, alright, grumpy pants, I’ll stop teasing you,” he winked at me then glanced over his shoulder at the door. “Seriously, he’s good for you. He slows you down, grounds you. I don’t think I remember the last time you actually gave yourself time to heal.” Then, as he looked back at me, he asked, “what happened anyway? Nobody would tell me how you ended up in the hospital.”

“I had a run-in with a beast,” I said without offering more details, then cleared my throat and focused on more pressing matters. “Anyway, Milly. I’m absolutely sure something is going on with her and while I don’t want to point my finger without any proof, shit, I have a feeling she’s planning something.”

Kayson nodded, “I wouldn’t put it past her. Mate or not, she’s an absolute bitch pretending to be innocent. Alright,” he hissed and stood up, nodding once. “I’ll find out what’s going on and report back to you. For now, rest, you need it.”
