106: Growing a strong one.
**Aife pov**
After the uncomfortable showdown in the dining area, I sat alone with Khan while he watched me eat.
Occasionally, he commented on how I didn’t eat enough, which was equally as endearing as it was frustrating.
I had so much on my plate, literally and figuratively, that I really couldn’t force food down my throat no matter how much I tried to.
Finally, I pushed the plate away and groaned loudly, “I’m too full already, if I keep eating, I’ll blow up.”
Khan chuckled and shook his head, “you eat like chick, cub. To have the strength to carry the baby, you need more food.”
“No,” I insisted. “Overeating can be dangerous too. The last time I went to see a doctor, they told me I should eat as much as my body demands and right now, my body is screaming in a food coma.”
My words only made him laugh, but he didn’t comment or try to force more food down my throat. Progress, I guess.
I watched how the large man took my plate, stood from his seat and brought it to a nearby table. My plate was the only one with food leftover, others looked like someone kicked them clean.
When he looked at me again, he was grinning and once again, I realized just how creepy he looked while he was happy.
I had no idea how that was possible, but it was.
“What do you think about a little walk, cub?” He offered and stepped closer, extending his hand to me.
For some forsaken reason, I felt like I could trust him. All the weird vibes aside, he didn’t have the aura of danger or bad intentions.
So, without overthinking anything, I placed my hand in his and allowed Khan to help me up from my seat.
He didn’t let go of my hand as he led me out of the tent and passed more of them, some smaller and some bigger.
The camp was bustling with energy as every person we passed kept bowing and greeting us both. The whole clan was delusional, addressing me as the Alphas cub, which only made Khan grin wider.
I swear, the guy looked like he was about to piss himself from the overwhelming happiness and pride.
“Where are we going?” I asked eventually, wondering if he had a specific goal in mind.
Khan squeezed my hand like he thought I needed reassurance and answered without looking at me. “The healer. I want to know what you carry. Will I have a granddaughter or a grandson; we need to prepare and Enzo will kill me if I try to dress a girl in boys clothes.”
I looked up at him and frowned, “who said I want to know the gender? Isn’t that my decision to make?”
Khan stopped and froze up. His eyes widened like he hadn’t thought of it. “Shoot, I didn’t bother to ask, did I?” He hissed.
“No, you didn’t,” I chuckled and this time, I was the one who squeezed his hand, not the other way around. “But I’m just messing with you, I don’t mind finding out. In fact, I’ve been wondering what the gender of the baby is, but so far, my main concern has always been to make sure the baby is healthy and developing as it should, so I didn’t bother to ask.”
Khan smiled at me like I just hung the moon for him and instantly started dragging me towards the furthest tent in the line.
“I’m so excited,” he cheered. “Want to know the gender so badly, I never thought I could have this, but look at me now, a proud to-be grandpa. The Goddess has truly blessed me, hasn’t she? One day it’s only Enzo, I and the pack and the next, she drops a grown child in our cradle and blesses us with two generations.”
As he rambled on, I only looked around and tried to pay extra attention to every path between the tents.
I didn’t know what might happen next and so far, if there was one thing I learned, it was that I always needed an exit in case the worst scenario came true.
When we finally reached the healers tent, Khan looked like he could explode from the excitement he felt.
He let go of my hand and placed his large palm on the small of my back, ushering me inside.
From the looks of it, the healer was clearly expecting us, having already set up a comfortable-looking area for me to lay down.
“Come here, lay down, I won’t bite,” the woman spoke gently, almost like she was talking to a scared animal, not a grown woman.
I nodded and approached the area before I climbed on the makeshift bed and laid down.
Khan stood right next to me, grinning from ear to ear, bouncing on his heels. “Go on, I want to know what color stuff we’re getting for my grandbaby,” he waved at the healer.
The woman only smiled and nodded as I pulled the clothes up to expose my belly. In the meantime, she pulled up her sleeves and carefully set her palms on my small bump. “Oh, my,” she gasped, a look of surprise crossing her features.
“What?” I asked, voice louder and more urgent than intended.
“The baby is healthy,” she assured me. “I didn’t mean to startle you, I was just surprised by the aura the baby is channeling. You’re growing a strong one,” she grinned, looking just as creepy as Khan did.
I swallowed and nodded. Thankfully, Khan took my hand and squeezed it for support before he took over the conversation. “Come on, don’t make us wait, tell us if we’re welcoming a princess or a prince in this world?”
“Hmm, let’s see,” the healer mumbled and brought her hands closer to me, not touching the skin, “it looks like-”
A loud crash, followed by a growl cut her off. Her head snapped up and jaw dropped as her eyes focused on the tent entrance.
Mere seconds later, Enzo barged in, panting, eyes wide with panic. “Khan, we’re under attack. There’s this monster, shit, it’s huge and bloody, it’s breaking through our defences. Come, we need as many men as we can get.”
I looked at Khan in horror and choked out, “I told you it’s best I left.”
His warm hand landed on my shoulder as he whispered, “and I told you no. Stay here, you’re safe with us, cub. Daddy and papa will protect you with their lives if need be. Keep the bean safe too.”
With those words still hanging in the air, both Khan and Enzo took off, leaving me with the healer, both of us pale and truly horrified.
