4: Know your place, mutt.
**Killian pov**
Jonathan accepted me. Bloody hell, he accepted me. I couldn’t remember the last time I felt more happiness than I did when he flashed me that beautiful smile and tears welled in his eyes while he nodded and squeezed my hand tighter.
This wasn’t how I had planned my life to go. Truly, the plan was to marry, have a couple of kids and live a happy life.
Instead, my so-called bride was given as a mate to the man I had been more or less enemies with for years by the moon Goddess. Then, I was trapped in a game of trying to keep her safe from her mate, and somehow, along the road, apparently I fell in love with a man.
Okay, that wasn’t quite the whole truth. I started thinking about the possibilities only after Jonathan confessed his feelings and after the near death experience, I realized I couldn’t keep stalling anymore.
There was no one I trusted more than I trusted Jonathan. In all the years we spent traveling the lands together, we had already grown insanely close, so it only made sense that eventually, something might come out of it.
Besides, even Kayson, my own Beta and best friend, wasn’t as close to me as Jonathan was.
Speaking of which, I was still waiting for him to visit me in the hospital. I understood that the whole mess with his mate had to be hard on him, but I couldn’t excuse him for not fulfilling his duties either.
Jonathan suddenly squeezed my hand a little tighter, “what’s on your mind?” He asked and reached out to run his hand through my hair, “hell, you have no idea how much I’ve been wanting to do this,” he whispered.
I flashed him a smile and chuckled. “I’m thinking about nothing important, and go ahead, my hair is all yours to use and abuse.”
Jonathan rolled his eyes, showcasing that little flame within him I had always admired. Even before I looked at him as someone more than just a person of trust and my personal driver, I always enjoyed the moments he decided to show this sassier side of him.
“This place is boring, when can I leave?” I whined while Jonathan still ran his hand through my hair, a motion so soothing, my eyes were fluttering closed even when I didn’t feel tired at all.
“Not until I tell you that you can,” he muttered, gently massaging my scalp.
“Aren’t I the Alpha anymore? Doesn’t my word matter around here these days?” I asked, chuckling.
Jonathan shrugged. “Not when it comes to your health. If it were up to you, you’d be out of here right after the surgery. I know you, Killian, I know how you are. But today, you listen to me. Well, today and many days after today, but that’s irrelevant for now. Your wolf suffered, he isn’t helping you heal, so while you’re more or less healing at human pace, you don’t move that nice ass out of the bed.”
I nearly choked on my spit. I had heard many compliments over the years, but somehow, the way Jonathan so casually mentioned my ass being nice had me in a chokehold. No one, especially a man, had ever commented on my ass.
And, of course, it showed because my cheeks burned bright red the moment those words left his lips. God damn it, my body was a traitorous fuck, giving out just how I felt in the moment.
I opened and closed my mouth but the words didn’t come. At one point, I had to have been looking like a fish out of water, but for once, the very Beta I was waiting for finally arrived.
Kayson kicked the door open and stood there, breathing heavily as if he had just ran through territories to get here. “Killian,” he breathed out and slowly stepped closer.
Jonathan’s grip on my hand tightened, a low warning growl slipping from his lips.
To my surprise, Kayson actually noticed it and stopped in his tracks, a look of disgust crossing his face. “Know your place, mutt, you don’t growl at your Beta,” he hissed through gritted teeth.
I arched an eyebrow at the attitude but decided to see how this would play out. I needed Jonathan to stand his ground, to show everyone, including my Beta, that he was right where he had to be.
And he did. Hell, he did.
Jonathan released my hand and jumped to his feet, standing face to face with Kayson as another growl slipped from his lips. “My place? You want to talk about my place? I’ve stood by this man, your Alpha and supposedly best friend, all this time. I nearly lost my mind while he was in the surgery, I fucking cried and begged the Goddess to save him. I was there as soon as he woke up. Where were you? If I have to learn my place, what is yours, because I didn’t see you losing your sanity over your dying best friend!” He screamed in Kayson’s face.
I couldn’t help but grin like an idiot. That was him, that was my man. Damn.. my man.
Kayson started breathing heavily, his chest riding and falling with every breath and I could see the look in his eyes - one that meant trouble.
But, before he could do something he would absolutely regret, I let out a growl of my own, stopping him right before he raised his hand.
“Kayson,” I said calmly, catching his attention. “If it was me who stood in your place, I’d think really fucking hard if I have the right to strike my Alpha’s chosen mate. Best friend or not, I won’t accept disrespect towards my chosen one.”
Jonathan spun on his heels to face me and flashed me a sheepish grin. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to lose my cool like that,” he said and took his place next to my bed again, grabbing my hand and squeezing it.
“Yes, you did,” I laughed, shaking my head. “There’s no need to lie, Johnny, I’m not angry.”
Kayson stood there, frozen, watching us interact with eyes wide and jaw dropped. When he finally pulled himself together, the little shit grinned and clapped his hands once. “I knew it! I fucking knew there had to be something going on between the two of you!”
