103: A death wish.

**Zion pov**

Kala was absolutely right again.

I had been stuck in my grief, pain and anger so much, it had clouded my ability to make rational decisions or think about everything that had meant so much to me all my life.

Bane had been the only constant I had ever known. Yes, we had argued and fought, but even after the worst days, I always had my best friend.

But now.. Now I was acting like the coward I never wanted to be.

Unbeknownst to myself, I had given up on him, allowed the monster to take what wasn’t his to take and turned a blind eye on the suffering of the one person who had always been there for me.

Yes, he wasn’t the greatest person alive, but in his own way, he had always been there for me, so it was about the time I paid back by doing the same.

As soon as Kala and I finished our breakfast, we headed out of the cave and back in the direction of the cabin.

It wasn’t hard to find since we both focused on the stench of blood that surrounded the place.

I went in first, making sure Kala was still at a safe distance if things went south. Once I made sure the cabin was empty, I went to her and we returned together.

Kala grabbed a few essentials that were left behind and a change of clothes while I stood on guard by the main door.

“I’m getting really darn worried,” she called from upstairs.

As much as I wanted to run to her, I didn’t, mainly because I needed to keep watch on the door. Her safety came first.

“About what?” I called out.

When Kala spoke again, her voice grew louder, so I knew she was walking down the stairs. “About Aife. Her boots are here and so is her coat. I think we should take them with us if we happen to run into her. But I also worry she might come back here to look for them. What do we do?”

“Wait,” I dragged out the word and finally glanced at her, “you mean she didn’t get dressed before she ran away?”

Kala approached me slowly and nodded. “Looks like it. All her stuff is here, including clothes she took off before she decided to have a nap.”

“Fuck,” I hissed under my breath.

Now, we didn’t have just a crazed, possessed Alpha, but also a Luna that ran around snowy mountains barefoot. Fuck me.

“I still think we should check the village. I don’t know why, but I have a feeling we might find some answers over there.” Kala said as she stopped next to me.

I swallowed and nodded in agreement. “A plan is better than no plan at all. Trying to locate her could be too dangerous. I still worry, obviously, but she’s a smart girl, she knows how to take care of herself.”

“Exactly,” Kala exclaimed. “She’s not just any other girl, she’s your Luna. And to be Luna of Bane’s pack, I believe she has to be stronger than other women we might know. The Goddess knows what she’s doing with her pairings, we really need to put more faith in her, Aife and Bane too.”

I didn’t know how, but Kala had the ability to point out the most logical and reassuring things in such a simple way, she never came across as condescending even if she pointed out the obvious.

From there, we quickly gathered the last things we needed together and headed out.

We left a pair of boots and Jonathan’s extra coat in case Aife returned to the cabin, but also took extras with us if we happened to run into her on our way to the village or at the village itself.

As we slowly descended the mountain, we both agreed it was for the best to avoid the area that reeked of blood the most.

Neither of us wanted to see the consequences of the battle between Bane and Killian. Even more so, I didn’t want to upset Kala.

If Killian or his men had died during the battle, there would be bodies scattered around the scene. Fuck it, there would be guts and body parts, which was something a pregnant woman should never witness, especially this late in her pregnancy.

Kala’s baby bump wasn’t too large, but she was getting closer to popping like a small, cute balloon. Shifter pregnancies didn’t last long, especially those between different species. While rare, those happened and also came with a list of complications that usually didn’t happen to wolves per se.

To be honest, I was just happy that she felt okay and so far, the pregnancy progressed relatively easy. All those warnings we got from the pack doctor at the beginning thankfully didn’t apply to her.

Also, while I was happy, I was equally worried. So far so good, of course, but I had no idea what I would do if any of those warnings turned into reality, especially in the current situation.

Trying to focus on anything but my thoughts, I took Kala’s hand in mine, brought it to my lips and kissed her knuckles. “I love you, you know that, right?” I asked before I pulled her hand away from my lips.

Kala glanced at me and beamed, “of course, you sap.”

From there, we joked around and teased each other until, finally, hours later, we reached the bottom of the mountain.

When we approached the village, it was getting darker, so I was glad that at least tonight, we could find a decent place to sleep.

That is, if nothing happened and changed the plan.

To our great relief, the village wasn’t run by humans. Wolf shifters resided here so we both felt like we truly didn’t have to hide.

First things first, I arranged a quick doctors visit for Kala in the small private doctors practice.

While she was getting checked and spoke about anything that could worry her to the nurses, we both agreed I wouldn’t accompany her.

As much as I wanted to, I had a quick mission to fulfill first.

So, I took my not-so-happy ass to the pub. Not to get drunk, but to gather some information.

It wasn’t hard to find the loudest mouth in the pub and when I sat next to the man and asked him about the matains, I knew we had yet another problem on our hands.

“Yeah, man, nobody goes into the mountains. They are ran by the mountain lions and when I tell you they’re vicious fuckers, that’s what I mean. All of the fingers and toes of the village members wouldn’t be enough to count the dead bodies we have dragged out of there after the attacks. Wolves are not welcome there, it’s best to stay away if you don’t have a death wish.”
