§ BOOK 3 § 1: Fuckin’ wolves.

**Khan pov**

One moment, I stood next to my mate, holding his hand like the team we had always been, ready to take on the monster who was attacking us to protect our cub and grandchild, and the next..

Well, the next moment a wolf appeared out of the blue and went straight for attack. The poor mutt was beaten so badly, but even as my men tried to drag him away, the beast only kicked it away like some ball to ensure no one got close to it.

We stood there, shocked, unsure how to help or what to do next. Enzo’s breath caught in his throat, his hand gripped mine tighter as we watched the beast stop right in front of the mutt’s unmoving body.

“Fuckin’ wolves,” I hissed under my breath, holding my mate like only my touch could keep him grounded.

I didn’t want to let go. I didn’t want to allow him to jump in and put his life on the line for a war that wasn’t ours to begin with.

I could stand here and protect a child I claimed as mine, but I couldn’t risk my people for someone who just decided to play hero.

The beast roared and lifted its leg like it was about to stomp on the poor mutt’s head, but he was stopped by a loud scream, coming from behind us. “Stop!”

Enzo and I startled at the sound, fuck it, even the beast did.

The monster’s head snapped up, nostrils flared and he instantly dropped any idea about smashing the mutt’s head, instead focusing on going straight for our cub.

Enzo and I exchanged a glance, both of us knowing what we thought without saying it out loud before we jumped in the monster’s way.

As we stood there, our men followed our lead while Enzo screamed, “cub, leave and hide! Get out of here, daddy and papa will take care of the ugly shit, but you be a good girl for us and get out of here!”

I half expected her to listen. Not because she was an obedient girl, but because maybe she valued her life more than others. But, I really expected it only a little bit because I knew better.

Aife had something special about her. I didn’t know what yet, but that flame in her eyes wouldn’t be easy to dim down, even with the best intentions at heart.

And of course, just as I knew deep down, she didn’t back down.

“Let him come!” She screamed.

Enzo glanced at me, I mouthed a weak, “we must learn to trust our cub, she knows best,” and we both cautiously stepped away.

Our men, although clearly confused, followed us and stepped away too, making a clear pathway for the beast, leading straight to our cub.

I would be lying if I said that my heart wasn’t in my throat or as I wasn’t damn near seconds away from shitting myself, but I had to listen to my own words.

She knew better, she knew what she was doing and she wouldn’t put her mini cub at risk if she wasn’t sure there was no real danger.

I stood there watching, gripping Enzo’s hand, trying not to breathe as the beast walked past us. It smelled like rotten flesh, old blood and centuries of secrets only something as old as these mountains could hide.

It wasn’t just the stench or the weird look of the beast, it was something about the aura around it that made it feel unnatural. Almost like something that wasn’t supposed to exist, let alone walk and breathe.

My breath caught in my throat, an audible gasp traveled around us as we watched Aife raise her hand and stop the beast in his tracks.

As he stood right in front of her, she finally spoke, loud and clear. “There, you found me. No more killings.” She hissed, looking up at him, never averting her gaze.

Their Goddess did a good job with this one. A woman with strength as calm and all-consuming as Aife’s was a true, rare gem and it only made me feel ten times as proud as I already was.

I squeezed Enzo’s hand and whispered, “do you see her? That’s our cub, my love, that’s our daughter. Just look at her.”

Tears filled my eyes in both fear and admiration, but I couldn’t look away.

Enzo agreed with me, nodding, the same as me unable to look away from the powerful scene right before us. “Yes,” he breathed out. “That’s our girl.”

We all stood there for what felt like ages, looking at Aife and the beast stare at each other until the beast took the last step towards her and her palm pressed against his chest.

I held my breath and slowly pulled my hand from Enzo’s grip. If anything were to go down soon, it was likely to happen now and I was hell bent on being ready.

If that fucking monstrosity decided to try to harm my cub, I wanted to be ready to attack, and to hell, I was more than happy to rip it apart, limb by limb.

Enzo placed his hand on my shoulder and whispered, “breathe, my love, breathe. She has this under control, our girl knows what she’s doing.”

I almost started believing in his words until the large claw of the monster covered her hand, holding it in place against its chest.

Everyone watched them as my cub looked up at the monster again and gasped. She saw something there, I had no idea what, but it was enough for her facial features to soften immediately.

“Don’t pull away,” the beast choked out, the voice sounding like it hadn’t been used for centuries, which I was sure might have been true. “The monster is silent when you touch me.” It added.

Enzo and I exchanged glances before Aife looked at us. “Papa, dad,” she said and I almost dropped to my knees crying as she acknowledged us. “Get Zion to safety and help him.” She nodded at the beaten mutt. “The wolf, he’s the Beta of the pack, one of my closest friends and his mate is here too, she’s pregnant. I need him safe, okay?”

“Yes, yes, whatever my daughter wants,” Enzo all but screamed, tears streaming down his cheeks as he ordered men to get the mutt to safety.

Aife’s gaze locked with mine, a small smile appeared on her lips as she added, “go with them, papa, I’ll handle this.”

Before I could open my mouth in protest, I watched in horror how the beast pressed his other claw against my cub’s slightly round belly.

“No!” I roared, but the sound of my voice was overpowered by a loud cry from the beast, followed by a weak whine from the monstrous creature, “a boy.”
