104: Pathetic maggot.

**Bane pov**

The pain was unbearable. Not just fighting against the monster with everything I had in me, but also the beast’s attempts to shift back into the human form.

I felt like I was being torn in half by both monstrous sides.

One kept shouting profanities at me, even though the voice was distant and the other tried to do everything in its power to make me suffer.

Oddly enough, if there was one thing I got to know during the experience, it was that both sides didn’t just fight me, they actively fought each other too.

It felt like the monster and the beast hated each other with just as much passion as I hated them both.

“Bane, don’t be stupid,” I heard the monster’s distant voice, his tone heavy and strained, as if he was struggling to be heard. “Let go and I’ll lead, stop fighting, you’re only killing yourself.”

I chuckled, shook the head that definitely wasn’t mine and forced the beast upright.

Instead of focusing on the cabin, I guided him away. The last thing I needed was to allow him anywhere near Aife or her scent.

The further away I got him, the better. I needed to keep my mate safe, I needed to give her a chance to get away.

As much as it pained me, I knew that even if I never got to see her again, I would choose that over and over again, if only it meant she lived.

“You pathetic maggot,” the monster sneered at me. “Are you really that stupid? You believe I will back down just because you force us away now? Just you wait-”

“Enough!” I growled, cutting him off. “I don’t want to hear a word from a bastard like you. Die, motherfucker!”

The monster laughed at me, like he always did. “Ah, you fool. Just wait, just you wait. Enjoy your victory while it lasts because once you tire yourself out, I’ll still be here, waiting to take over and finish the job.”

“You’re not getting anywhere near her,” I insisted as I leaned against the nearby tree.

He was right, unfortunately. Taking control over a demonic-looking body that wasn’t mine was truly exhausting me.

In fact, it felt worse than overpowering the monster.

Maybe I was growing weaker and really barely held on, but I couldn’t give up. I had to try, had to fight for as long as I was breathing.

My life was non-existent at this point. Ever since the monster took over, I had lost more than just my sanity and if I didn’t want to lose the one person who had ever truly meant something to me - I had to keep going.

I forced the beast’s body off the tree and guided him forward, away from the cabin.

As we neared the bottom of the mountain, I had to change the direction again because I caught on distant voices. There had to be civilization nearby and I’d rather be caught dead than guide the beast to an impromptu feast of innocents.

“Aww, look at you, such a caring soul. I wonder what went wrong with my bloodline, when did men of my blood turn into such pussies,” the monster sneered at me.

By the tone of his voice, I could tell he was growing more agitated with every step I forced.

And not only that - what seemed to piss him off even more was my indifference to his words.

All this time, I had given in, handing over reactions he so desperately needed, but now that he got none, he was acting like a toddler, throwing a tantrum.

“How’s it going over there? Enjoying the view?” I asked him with a weak chuckle.

Adding gasoline to an unstoppable wildfire was stupid, but for once, I wanted to remind him who truly owned my body and decisions.

Just because I had an unwanted guest invading my very being still didn’t mean I was anywhere near ready to give up.

“Mock me all you want, but we both know the truth, don’t we? You’re weak, Bane. I can’t believe this either, but facts speak louder than any words. I’m starting to think that maybe instead of your little mate, I should kill you. Getting rid of her would be so darn fun, but I’m sure it’d feel so much better if I had a chance to rid the world of the weak link. You, Bane, you are the weak link of our bloodline.”

This time, I couldn’t help but laugh.

Even in this situation, in which he held no power over me, he still acted like he did.

Talk about delusional personality.

“Oh, so you’re all big and brave all of a sudden, huh? Yeah, let’s see if you’ll sing the same tune once I take the reins,” he sneered again and I only laughed louder.

Laughing was the only thing I could think of to distract him. My main focus wasn’t on the argument, it was on the road ahead as I navigated the insanely large body through the forest, making sure I took this time to my advantage.

The problem was that while I sort of succeeded and the beast wasn’t as dangerously close to the cabin anymore, he still wasn’t giving up on trying to shift too.

“Stop it,” I growled at the beast, not knowing if he would listen but still needing to try.

To my absolute shock, he stopped. He actually stopped trying to force the body into a shift so I managed to get even further away.

On top of that, I also forced the body to move in circles to fuck with their sense of direction and make it harder for either of them to find the way back to the cabin.

For as long as I could get far enough, they wouldn’t be able to catch her scent and therefore, find the cabin fast enough to track her down too.

I knew Aife wasn’t inside that cabin - the scent was there, yes, but it had faded and smelled distant.

Slowly, I was running out of energy and every step became harder than the last.

The monster relished in my misery and chanted, “that’s it, just like that, give up, Bane. Give up and watch a true leader take your place, just give up already.”

I tried to ignore his words and actually succeeded until exhaustion won me over. The beast’s eyelids shuttered and the last thing I remembered was falling forward, face nearing the snow before the world faced into darkness.
