16: Good man.

**Jonathan pov**

I sat in the hall near Killian’s hospital room for what felt like hours. Seconds dragged, minutes felt like a personal attack, but eventually, when Beta Kayson finally left the room, I finally felt like I was closer back to feeling normal.

Now that Killian had chosen me, I didn’t want to spend even a minute away from him. All those years of dreams, sleepless nights, desires and desperation were over.

“Hey, Jonathan?” Kayson cleared his throat and stopped in front of me. He shoved his hands into the pockets of his jeans, looking both uncomfortable and sheepish as he looked down at me. “Can I..” he pulled one of his hands out of the pocket to scratch the back of his neck. “Can I like.. talk to you a bit or something?” He finally asked.

I arched an eyebrow, truly surprised to see the Beta of the pack look this uncomfortable. I almost forgot to answer just staring at him like this, but eventually nodded in agreement. “Yeah, sure,” I muttered, voice way weaker than I wanted it to be.

Kayson nodded towards the end of the hall and cleared his throat, “Killian is resting right now so why don’t we find a more private place to talk? I’m not planning anything, I promise, I just want to talk - that’s all.”

“And you don’t want anyone to overhear, am I right?” I finished for him.

Kayson nodded and grinned. Looking at him I realized why it seemed so easy for him to charm everyone in his way - Kayson had that easygoing personality and a charm that could come only naturally.

He had always been the ladies man of the pack and seeing him this close, I completely understood why most women were ready to drop their skirt for him. It wasn’t the title, the power, wealth or any other superstitial thing most people thought - with Kayson it was raw talent and charm.

Standing up, I nodded in agreement and followed him down the hall. Kayson moved with an aura of power and confidence that wasn’t as common these days anymore - every pack member clearly respected him.

Truth be told, I also understood why Killian and Kayson were best friends. They were very alike in all the best ways possible - powerful each in their own way but neither of them was blinded by the power.

When he finally stopped by a window and looked around, Kayson leaned against the wall and crossed his arms in front of his chest. “So.. you and Killian? It’s like a.. well.. it’s real, right? It isn’t some kind of twisted prank or attempt to climb ranks by sleeping your way up, right?”

I choked on my own saliva listening to him. My cheeks burned so bright, the blush crept up to the tips of my ears and bled down to my neck.

Kayson only grinned and slapped a hand over my shoulder, as if my reaction was exactly what he expected to see. “Good man, Johnny, you’re a good man.”

I had to look completely stupid as I stood there, speechless and uncomfortable as hell while the Beta of the pack praised me.

“I like you, you know,” he suddenly blurted out and then, as if realizing something, he pulled his hand from me sharply and raised both hands in surrender. “Not like that, shit, I don’t like you like Killian likes you, I just tried to say that I- I mean you’re a cool dude and all but I don’t like dudes like that.”

Watching him stumble over his own words had to be one of the most entertaining experiences in my life. I wasn’t the only one blushing bright like a tomato anymore and I could thank Kayson for making both me and himself uncomfortable as hell.

Eventually, as he kept rambling on, trying to explain himself, I couldn’t take it anymore and just started laughing at his attempts to sound serious.

“Okay, okay,” I choked out between the gasps. “Both of us need to take a breath,” I managed to say, trying to calm down but the look on his face wasn’t helping me much.

First, Kayson just stared at me like I had gone mad, but soon, he started laughing along with me, wiping the tears off his cheeks like a young kid, not a supposedly serious pack Beta.

By the time we finally managed to calm down, we had gotten a few strange looks from the hospital staff and both of us had to lean against the wall to stay upright. I was still taking deep breaths to calm down while Kayson just grinned at me like an idiot.

“You’re good for him,” Kayson finally spoke, the grin growing bigger. “He started smiling again, you know.”

That caught me off guard. “What? Sorry but what do you mean he started smiling again? He has always smiled.” I tried to sound unaffected but fuck, was my heart beating in my chest just a little faster than usual.

Kayson chuckled and shook his head. “No, not like that. He’s my best friend, I know him better than anyone and I know how that asshole smiles too. The polite smiles are one thing and I’m not talking about those. The smile he has when he looks at you, when he just talks about you.. yeah, he’s whipped and proud about that.”

I swallowed loudly and looked down at my feet, trying to hide the aggressive blush that had returned and was burning my face with newfound force. “Well, I do like him a lot too, so..” I trailed off, not sure if this really was the conversation Kayson wanted from me.

“All I’m saying is that you’re good for him and you better work every fucking day to stay that way. Challenge him, push him out of his comfort zone, fight, make up, hold him when it gets hard and love the fuck out of that animal.” Kayson said and slapped his hand on my shoulder again, squeezing it gently. “You two look good together and I truly hope that never changes. Also, if you hurt him, I’ll hurt you.”

I finally looked at him, amused as hell, “so all this conversation was simply to warn me?”

Kayson shrugged, “someone had to threaten your well-being and life after all. That’s my best friend we’re talking about.”

Chuckling, I took his hand and shook it, “deal.”

Kayson grinned wider and shook my hand a few more times before he released me. “Alright, go check on your man, I’m sure he’s wondering why you’re not in that room yet.”
