103: Lock down the camp.
**Aife pov**
Soon after the words escaped me, the friendly smile disappeared from Khan’s face and suddenly, he looked downright murderous.
“That won’t do,” he muttered under his breath and then, his eyes met mine. “I am not a violent man, but I can become one when my cub is in danger. I’ll make sure to lock down the camp.”
His voice dropped lower, which did nothing but make him appear even more threatening and scary than he did at the first glance.
Before he could raise from his seat, I placed my hand over his to stop him. “There’s no need, I don’t plan to stick around for long. I wouldn’t want to put anyone here in danger because of me. I saw families and children, I can’t risk it.”
Khan pinned me with a glare that definitely wasn’t friendly. “Nonsense. You are my cub now, I simply don’t give a rat’s ass about danger. The pack protects their own, especially the cub of their leader.”
Just as I opened my mouth, another man joined us. Goddess, he was even larger and scarier than Khan.
This guy didn’t have visible scars or injuries, but there was something in his eyes that sent cold shivers down my spine and warning bells instantly went off in my mind.
My throat instantly dried up as I watched him stand there, looking down at me like I was beneath him - a pest, at best.
Khan cleared his throat and repositioned my hand so he could hold and squeeze it before he spoke without looking at the man, “Enzo, darling, meet Aife, our cub.”
I could feel sweat break out on my forehead as I waited for a blow up, anger and shouting.
Instead, the man, apparently Enzo, flashed me the widest grin I’d ever seen and sat down next to me.
Before I could as much as suck in a breath, he had his arms wrapped around me in a tight hug. “Fuck yes, I’m a daddy now,” he said, all too cheerful and quickly released me, “shoot, sorry, I hope I didn’t squeeze the bun in the oven too much. Khan already mind-linked me and gave me heads up, I can’t believe we’re about to become granddaddies.”
I stared at him, my jaw hanging as I tried to take in how both of these insanely intimidating men were acting like gossiping women.
“Don’t overwhelm our cub, Enzo,” Khan chuckled and shook his head. “How about we take this one step at the time and first, you introduce yourself, hmm?”
Enzo’s eyes widened in realization and he eagerly nodded his head, which made him look a little child-like.
When his eyes met mine again, he grinned again. “As you know, my name is Enzo. I happen to be that gorgeous brutes’ mate and the same as Khan, I’m very happy to welcome you into our little family. I’m the best advice giver in this place and I’ll totally become your favorite dad, trust me.”
I glanced at Khan, looking for reassurement or at least any help to get out of this situation, but he only sat there, smirking at my misery.
Enzo gasped and grabbed my hand just like Khan had earlier before he leaned closer and whispered, “if you tell Khan I’m the favorite dad, I’ll sneak in snacks for you. Chocolate at 3AM? You got it.”
“I’m not really craving anything,” I managed to choke out, surprised I had found my voice again.
No, at this point, the Moon Goddess had to be having too much fun with my life. Okay, first it was fine while I lived in my old pack. Then, I got kidnapped and my life was turned into living hell by the man who turned out to be my fated mate.
And if that wasn’t enough, I was pregnant, running from the same man who was possessed by some unknown force and now, two crazy mountain lion men were trying to claim me as their child.
What the actual fuck?
“Pft, that’s fine,” Enzo waved me off, pulling me out of my thoughts. “I can deliver pickles and raw meat too, whatever my favorite child demands, really.”
Khan rolled his eyes, “Aife is the only child we have claimed, Enzo, she can’t be your favorite one if she doesn’t have siblings.” He tried to correct his mate.
Enzo waved him off too, “semantics, who cares for as long as I’m her favorite dad?”
As they started bickering, my eyes darted between them and I seriously wondered how the hell I had gotten myself into this mess.
Maybe it would’ve been better if I just froze to death in that cave? In that case, I wouldn’t have to figure out how to escape two clearly delusional and overbearing muscle walls of men.
Eventually, when they finally stopped trying to beat each other with words and snarky remarks, Khan looked at me with the kindest eyes I had ever seen and pointed at the plate.
“Eat, cub, you need to build up energy. Remember you’re eating for two now. Also, I don’t like how skinny you are. You should get all fat and healthy before our grandbaby arrives.”
Yep, my jaw just officially dropped to the floor. The casual way he said it, I was sure any onlooker who didn’t know the situation would seriously assume Khan truly was my father.
“I-” I tried to speak but the words died in my dry throat so I drank some water and tried again. “I’m sorry to disappoint you, but I already have a dad.”
Khan and Enzo exchanged glances, both frowning, finally on the same page, but Khan was the one who spoke again.
“If you do, where is he now? I don’t see anyone around you, don’t see him protecting his child. If that’s a father, he’s an absent one and he shouldn’t call himself a father at all. I assure you, myself and Enzo will be much better than he could ever be.”
“I’m not sure where he is,” I admitted because I really didn’t know if dad was still in Killian’s pack or if he had left already. “But if he knew what’s happening, I think he would try to protect me.”
“That’s the difference,” Khan insisted. “With him, you think he would, but with us, you know we will.” He looked at Enzo, nodded and watched how his mate stood up. “Make sure the camp is locked down, no outsiders can enter, let alone get close to this place. Send out the patrols and make sure everyone is aware that our main priority is the safety of our cub.”
