113: It had to be fate.

**Kala pov**

Zion’s wolf was a magnificent creature. It was larger than any wolf I had ever seen with beautiful grey fur and eyes that looked back at me with so much love, I doubted it could be contained.

And fast. I couldn’t forget to mention how fast the wolf was - moving through the show and trees with such grace, it took my breath away.

I couldn’t remember why I feared his wolf so much anymore. Whenever Zion went for runs, I always stayed away and he never forced me to join, knowing my reluctance to be near the wolf.

But now, as I sat on its back, gripped the fur and felt the powerful body move under me, I couldn’t be more amazed than I already was.

I trusted Zion with my life and that was why I didn’t question him about where he decided to run. Maybe I should’ve because he was heading up the mountain like a man on a mission.

I assumed he could be running back to the cabin, but I really doubted that. Something was telling me that Zion wanted to find the lions.

Goddess knew how long time passed by the time we found the first signs of life.

Zion slowed down and sniffed the air, the wolf instantly let out a sound that was a mix of whimper and a growl, like he was trying to tell me something.

I didn’t speak wolf, obviously, hell I didn’t know if there was language for wolves, but I still tried to figure out what he meant.

Since he stood there frozen on the spot, I looked around, but saw nothing. Eventually, I decided to try to speak.

First, I took a deep breath, then straightened my spine and finally, addressed whoever might have been hiding from our view.

“Is anyone out there? We don’t come to attack or invade, we’re looking for the mountain lions pack. The wolf, he’s my mate, Beta Zion and I’m Kala, Beta female of our pack. I’m also carrying a pup, so if anyone is out there, please reveal yourself slowly and without any sharp movements so as not to alert my mate. He is very protective of us both.” I kept my voice loud and steady, for once, remembering that I stood high in the pack we fled because of the Alpha’s curse.

There was some rustling between the trees, but nobody showed themselves or stepped out.

Instead, from distance came a voice - deep and leveled, that of authority. “You’ve found what you’re looking for, Beta female Kala. We won’t step out of our posts to ensure your mate doesn’t feel the need to attack. We are very aware of wolves and their tempers.”

“Zion isn’t like that,” I blurted out, instantly jumping to his defence. “He’s overprotective, especially because I carry his pup, but he won’t attack without a reason. All I ask is no sharp movements and weapons.”

“We understand, but we still can’t leave our posts. We stand at defence due to an attack, Beta female Kala, we can’t afford to leave our posts,” the voice called out and I instinctively reached out to scratch behind Zion’s wolf’s ear.

“I swear, we are no threat,” I repeated to the lions that stood in hiding. “We’re trying to get away from the villagers, my mate believes they consume the unborn like cannibals so we left the village. Also, I’d like to know if maybe the Luna of our pack passed by this place. She went missing, her name is Aife.”

“Aife?” The gruff voice repeated and finally, a large man dropped from a nearby tree without any sound, as if he weighed nothing. “Aife is the name of the cub our leaders just adopted.”

I looked at the man and frowned. “What do you mean adopted?”

The corner of his mouth twitched, but he didn’t step any closer. In fact, he kept his hands raised in surrender so Zion could see he didn’t hold any weapons.

“One of our scouts found her in a cave, brought her here and leader Khan decided it had to be fate, so he adopted her as his cub. From what I heard, his mate, Enzo, was more than happy to become a father out of the blue too.” He explained, grinning like a fool.

I glanced at Zion, my eyes met his wolfish ones as he made a confused sound.

“So,” I dragged the world too long and looked back at the man. “You’re telling us that your leaders adopted our Luna and she’s still in your pack territory?”

The man smirked. “We don’t have territory, we have a camp, but yes, pretty much. The cub is the reason we stand here too. Shoot, I should’ve started with this properly. Beta female Kala, I believe it would be best if your mate took you elsewhere, away from the danger of the camp. We are under attack. Not here, but on the other side, where the main tents stand.” His smirk dropped by the time he finished talking and nodded in the direction where the attack was happening.

I swallowed loudly, but my throat still felt dry. My stomach literally dropped when I realized what this attack might be about.

And when Zion’s wolf made that pitiful sound, I knew, for a fact, that the lion camp was under Bane’s attack. He had found her again.

“May we pass the defence formation?” I asked the man, already having made the decision I knew Zion agreed with. “We need to get to our Luna.”

“That’s not a good idea,” he tried to insist.

I shook my head and quickly cut him off. “We’re not in the position to decide if the idea is bad or good. Sir, we must do what we must do to get to our Luna. She needs her pack too.”

The man whistled a weird tone, nodded and backed away, closer to the tree. “The lions have been warned not to stand in your way. Good luck, Beta female Kala,” and with that being said, he climbed the tree faster than someone his size should be able to climb it. Shoot, he climbed faster than any other cat.

Zion didn’t waste time, he took off faster than a bullet and we reached the camp sooner than expected. The moment he stopped near a tent, Aife emerged and I hopped off my mates back to run to her and embrace her tightly.

Before I could utter a word, the camp shook with a violent growl - Bane.

My head snapped in the direction of the sound, I didn’t see him near, but that split second was enough for Zion to take off in the direction.

I screamed in horror but he didn’t stop and for the longest moment in my life, the world went quiet.

Until it didn’t…

The silence was broken by the wail of pain, followed with a surge of pain traveling through my own ribcage. I fell to my knees and gasped, “no, Zion.”
