91: The end of our road.
**Killian pov**
“Where,” the beast suddenly glowed, “is she?” He finished, heaving like those three words took all his energy.
To be honest, I was shocked to hear that thing speak at all. It was a wolf, but not exactly - something more demonic than it was an animal.
Lucan was a wolf, but the thing we faced was a mix of wolf and hell itself.
Suddenly, my eyes caught a movement. It was just a yerk, barely there, might be overseen by someone else, but to myself and Lucan it looked like someone was fighting the monstrous beast.
“Bane,” I whispered but only Lucan could hear me. “He’s in there, Lucan, the crazy bastard is still fighting. Holy fucking hell, he’s still fighting!”
Lucan howled in agreement and what sounded like a mix of pride and relief. Just because we didn’t like the bastard didn’t mean we wished him ill, especially the shit that was happening right now.
Carefully, Lucan took one step forward, his paws felt heavier than usually, while my men formed a defensive line.
“Where is she?!” The beast demanded again, heaving heavily, his voice was so loud, it startled my men so much - some of them literally jumped.
“We need to make them stand down,” I warned Lucan. “If anyone, only we can fight that thing, our men will literally become minced meat if they try to stop him. Are you ready?” I asked, unsure if I had the answer for that question myself.
As always, Lucan proved just how much of an embodiment of a true Alpha he was. He growled, a low but powerful sound that made our men scatter aside while Lucan pushed our wolf form closer to the beast.
The closer we got, the worse the stench of rotten flesh and blood became, but we tried to ignore it.
And then, fuck, I barely saw it coming - just a blur of shadow and teeth before the body slammed into me. The bastard was too damn fast for someone his size.
We hit the ground hard, I was pretty sure my spine cracked, but Lucan showed no emotion until we felt the heavy body pin us down as claws ripped across my chest, opening it painfully.
Lucan snarled. This thing wasn’t like any wolf we had ever faced. Aside from the visible things that were noticeable instantly - the eyes hit me. They burned almost gold but looked like molten lava. It wasn’t born, this creature had to have been created by some evil forces.
Before I could register what was happening, Lucan shoved upward with both hind legs and flung the beast off. It hit a tree with a wet crunch, bark exploding behind it, but it only shook once and laughed.
“Now!” I growled at Lucan and he didn’t waste any time. My magnificent wolf was back on all four within seconds and lunged at the beast with no care about the still bleeding wounds across his chest.
We crashed together again - teeth snapping, fur flying, and soon, a stench I could only describe as sulfur poured off the beast as my claws finally found flesh.
I dragged my claws down, expecting blood and wails of pain, but there weren’t any of those. Instead, as I jumped back, I watched an odd, thick, dark substance trickle from the wounds.
Using the moment of my surprise, the beast attacked us. Its jaw locked on my shoulder and Lucan howled in pain as it shot through our body. Despite the pain, neither of us wanted to back out - we refused to give up and run away with our tail tucked between our legs.
Lucan and I tried our damndest, aiming for what we thought were the blind spots but when we realized we were losing this battle, we commanded the men to scatter and leave. It was safer to get them out of here, just in case the beast decided to attack them too.
Eventually, after what felt like nonstop attacks, I couldn’t feel my left side anymore. I was pretty sure one of my lungs had collapsed as every breath came heavy, panful, wet, burning - fucking gurgling.
I could taste blood in our mouth and when Lucan coughed, the same blood splattered across the ground beneath us. Our back leg was useless - torn like an old toy that I could barely drag like a dead limb.
And yet, I still didn’t stop and neither did Lucan. We knew we had no other choice but to keep going.
Lucan let out a growl of warning as the beast started circling us. It wasn’t rushing to attack anymore, more like playing around with its food. I was pretty sure the thing could smell death clinging close to Lucan and myself. We both knew there was little to no chance we could survive this.
“Still alive?” The beast hissed, but the voice sounded different again, not its own.
Lucan bared his teeth at the beast although he couldn’t lift the head properly.
The beast only kept walking in circles around our weak body, enjoying the mystery while I tried to whisper reassuring words to my wolf - the truest of the warriors. We were fucking drenched in our own blood, cold and dark spots were dancing before our eyes, but he still tried to fight.
Somehow, Lucan forced us back to all four, well three, and lunged. I could feel every muscle in the body scream in pain and protest as everything inside us pulled apart, but Lucan still pushed until he managed to collide with the beast.
It wasn’t enough, not even close to enough to knock the creature off its legs but it was enough to piss it off.
The out of this world canines sunk in our flesh and the next moment, we were mid-air, seconds before the beast slammed our already battered body into the ground - once, twice, and by the third time, the pain suddenly was gone.
I was pretty sure our body was going into shock, even with the blurry vision I still saw there was too much blood surrounding the scene. The ribs felt fucking broken in more ways I knew could be possible and when the beast dropped us the last time and his teeth finally released us, we couldn’t stand up anymore.
This was it. This was the end of our road…
