89: He’s close.
**Zion pov**
Slowly, Killian turned around to face me, his back now turned to Jonathan. In times like these, I truly hated Alphas with all my being - just facing one, being fucking shorter than him, was something I disliked more than I was willing to admit.
I didn’t want to look like some child who had someone to look up to. No, I wanted to be an equal, the same as I was with my best friend before the monster took over, but judging by the look on Killian’s face, it was clear he wasn’t planning to give me the same benefit Bane once offered.
“As much as I’d like to find out what in the name of Goddess made you think leaving her unattended here was a good idea, I won’t. Right now, we have a bigger problem and that problem is heading straight to our doorstep.” Killian announced.
His voice was calm, but I could hear the tension lacing the words. I knew that there was more to come, so I didn’t speak up and didn’t bother to ask questions I knew he would answer anyway.
Killian stepped aside, his body a tense wall of muscles. He ran his hand through his hair, took a deep breath and looked at the floor before he spoke again. “You two need to listen to me and listen carefully. Can you do that? Without any childish animosity.”
I gulped, glanced at Jonathan, who still looked like he was ready to set the world on fire, and nodded, waiting for his agreement.
“Fine,” Jonathan snarled. “What’s the plan?”
We could still hear the sound of crashing in the distance but it was moving closer to us and I was getting seriously worried about what might happen next.
Killian exhaled again, slowly and heavily. He stepped further into the room and turned to face us both. “I will hold him back. You,” he looked at me and nodded. “Go after your mate. Keep her safe and ensure she and your child live.” Then, he turned to Jonathan and smiled, just barely, “and you go after Aife’s scent.”
Jonathan took a step closer to Killian, shaking his head like a madman. “No. No, no, no, you can’t.”
Killian raised his hand, “I’m not joking, Jonathan. He’s close, we’re losing the time we don’t have.”
My eyes kept darting between them and at one point, I realized that there was more than met the eye. Those two weren’t just friends or pack members - there was tension I had never noticed before.
Okay, maybe Killian still looked like the smug asshole I knew he was, but Jonathan, wow, the guy looked literally desperate. If I wouldn’t know better, I would claim he was in love with his Alpha.
I shook my head to get rid of the unwelcome thoughts and focus on what mattered right now - Killian’s plan. As much as I hated to admit it, he was right. I had to ensure Kala and our child were safe, while it was best Jonathan went after Aife and helped her hide from what was coming our way.
“You can’t be serious,” Jonathan snarled, his whole body shaking, eyes blazing as he looked at Killian with such intensity, I wondered if the Alpha could break after all.
Killian, to his credit, only shrugged and muttered, “but I am. As serious as I’ve ever been.”
Jonathan crossed his arms in front of his chest. “No.”
For a moment there, I thought both of them were about to either charge at each other or kiss, but neither happened. All they did was stare each other down until Killian arched an eyebrow and Jonathan dropped his arms at his sides with a heavy, almost painful sigh.
“I’ll keep her safe,” Jonathan muttered under his breath.
Killian nodded and turned to me. “You got it, right?”
“Yeah,” I answered, but my voice sounded a little too strained.
As the sound of crashing trees became louder and I could hear the growls of some of Killian’s men, the reality came crashing down harder than ever.
There was a massive possibility that Killian might die soon. The bastard even looked smug, like he was inviting the consequences in the form of my possessed best friend to come.
“You’ll live,” I quickly blurted out before I turned toward the door and walked out of the cabin without waiting for him to speak up.
It was best I left the words hanging because if the time came and anything happened to him, at least in my mind, he would survive.
As much as I disliked the guy, I didn’t want him to die. At least not entirely.
Plus, despite everything, he was risking his own skin for my Luna. Fuck, he was planning to stand against one of the most powerful Alphas out there - one who was carrying a monster this world hadn’t seen before.
I could hear them both exchanging harsher words but I didn’t turn around to try to listen or stop the arguing. Killian made it perfectly clear he was planning to hold the monster back enough for me to keep Kala safe and for Jonathan to find Aife, so I had to act fast.
Before I disappeared between the trees, I glanced back just in time to watch Killian jump out of the cabin. He shifted into his wolf mid-air, majestic and powerful like any other Alpha, and the next moment, he was gone.
Jonathan exited the cabin, glanced into the direction where Killian took off and shook his head, his shoulders slumped, expression heartbroken.
He noticed me standing, mouthed a weak “go” and sniffed the air around him before he took off in the opposite direction, up the mountain.
Following their lead, I ran deeper into the woods, following the direction Kala took earlier until I found her. Just as she promised me earlier, Kala sat high up a tree and looked down at me with a bright smile across her lips, “I hid,” she announced proudly.
I raised my hands up, waiting for her to get down. “You did, my love, and I’m very proud of you, but now, we must leave. It’s dangerous here as it is, but I have a feeling it’ll get much worse once they clash.”
