15: May I approach?
**Khan pov**
I stepped aside and pulled back the tent flap, waiting for the cub and that God ugly creature pass me but neither of them moved.
“I don’t think he’ll fit in there,” the cub muttered, nodding at the creature she still held onto tightly.
Honestly, I couldn’t understand why she was so adamant to keep her hands on the thing. He was too big, too ugly and too stinky to stand close to.
All that rotten flesh and blood didn’t make it look charming at all.
“Okay,” I whispered, looking between them, then nodded sharply. “How about I ask the healer to come out here instead? Would your..” I pointed at the creature, “..thing be willing to see the healer?”
The corner of her mouth twitched but she didn’t smile at me and instead looked at that awful creature, speaking softly, “Bane would you be okay to see the healer?”
“I’m not hurt,” the thing said and that voice, fuck me, it sounded like it owed a couple of centuries to death itself.
“The healer doesn’t want to check your injuries,” I interjected. “Everyone can see it’s a little too late for that.” I grumbled.
The creature growled at me, seriously acting like I had offended it or hurt some feelings.
Alright, whatever, but I wasn’t telling any lies, really. He truly was long past getting help.
Since I truly had no survival instinct, I rolled my eyes at it and crossed my arms. “The healer wants to see you because he needs to know what type of venom you carry. It’s literally to help the wolf that you chewed on like an old gum.”
“Venom?” The cub echoed, her eyes growing wide, full of surprise.
She looked cute like this, very darn adorable whenever she was surprised or tried to figure something out, but I couldn’t dwell on it.
Inside the tent there was a wolf dying and I had to make sure he pulled through one way or another.
So, I turned to my new cub, nodded sharply and grunted, “yeah, venom. The healer said it’s more prayer than promises when it comes to the wolf’s ability to survive, but he thinks that if the beast allows him to get some samples of the venom, he could try to create the anti-venom that could actually work.”
She listened carefully, lips parting slightly as she sucked in a surprised breath, then nodded eagerly. “Tell the healer to come out here and see him. Bane wants Zion to be okay as much as all of us, I’m sure he’ll be more than willing to help.”
I glanced at the beast and to my surprise, it grunted and nodded, opening the jaws a little to show off the teeth as if he was offering them.
Nodding, I grunted and turned around, slipping into the tent quickly.
“The beast will see you. He’s an ugly motherfucker but don’t say shit, seems he’s also sensitive, I already got growled at after I slipped and made a comment,” I whispered to the heater.
He glanced at me, eyebrow raised in disbelief but still nodded, agreeing without uttering a word.
Taking a deep breath, I led him outside and tried not to cringe as my eyes instantly focused on the beastly creature.
Fuck me, the more I looked at it, the more ugly it became somehow. This truly was beyond me, I had no damn clue anything, or anyone, could look this goddamn rotten on the outside and still walk the earth like it had no worry in the world.
Clearing my throat, I stepped aside and nodded at it, nudging the healer who was staring at the beast with his jaw dropped. “That’s.. uh, you know, the venom bag.”
The beast growled at me again but I ignored it completely, nudging the healer to approach it. “Go, you wanted to meet this thing in person, enjoy yourself my friend.”
I really, really wanted to warn the healer to hold his breath if the beast decided to open its mouth but I held back.
To hell, the snowflake might try to bite off my head if I dared do something as outrageous as tell the truth about his stinky breath.
I still stayed close just in case. Yeah, deep and not so deep down, I knew that there was no way I could hold the monstrous creature back if he snapped, but if nothing else, at least I could provide a second or two to hold him back.
The cub still held onto it as if the beast was precious to her and I truly was having a hard time not questioning her about it, but somehow managed to keep my mouth shut. Thankfully.
Standing frozen like some statue, my arms crossed in front of my chest, I kept silent and simply watched how the things played out in front of me.
The healer carefully approached, muttering, “may I approach?”
Seriously, this was some madness - the way the healer acted as if the beast was some scared little animal forced into some sort of cage was getting ridiculous.
The beast grunted and my cub smiled at the healer. “Don’t be scared, he won’t hurt anyone for as long as I hold onto him. He wants to help his best friend so he’ll do anything you tell him to do.”
The healer, getting bolder, nodded and stepped too close for my comfort, looking up at the monster. “Wow,” he breathed out, sounding amazed not disgusted as he should be. “I never thought I’d see something like this in my lifetime. One out of billions, you’re one out of billions.”
After a longer pause, the healer spoke again, “back in the day when I read those books, I really thought those were fairy tales written by faes who had consumed a little too many mushrooms, but you prove me wrong. I’m ashamed to admit I ever showed any bias and doubted their stories.”
I frowned but kept quiet. The healer was a very smart man but right now he was acting like a girl who met her biggest celebrity crush and I was stuck in a stupid position where I couldn’t even comment on it properly.
“May I ask you to please open your mouth?” The healer asked the beast reverently.
I scoffed and looked away, both because this acting like that ugly mug was something sacred was getting on my nerves and I really didn’t want to look into that mouth.
Who the fuck knew where that mouth had been before, right?
Okay, I lied, when the monster opened its mouth, I peaked at it for a second and instantly looked away again.
Never, fucking never had I seen someone have that many bloody rows of teeth, all sharp like razors, shiny and goddamn dangerous.
While I tried my bloody best to act nonchalant, the healer kept acting like a fangril, commenting on everything until he finally remembered why he was meeting the beast.
“I’ll take some samples, I think the venom is in the saliva, not canines. I’ll need you to stay around for a while until I figure this out, okay?”
