22. Welfare Check
The sun was high in the sky when Elise and Levi heard someone calling for them.
“Orleans Parish Police Department. This is Officer Landry. Is anyone here.”
Elise looked at Levi. “What are the police doing here?” She whispered.
“I don’t know.” He replied. “Let's go find out.” He climbed out of the destroyed bed and began searching around the room.
“Where the hell are my pants?”
“I think they’re in the hall.” Elise said as she threw on her robe.
She walked out of the room and found them just outside the door. She tossed them back to him and left to meet with the officer.
“Hello, you said your name is officer Landry, I am Elise?”
The office had been looking at some of the damage from the night before. He looked around at Elise when he heard her speak. Like most men, he was immediately taken in by her beauty. “Pardon me miss, but are you all right? We got a call last night requesting a wellness check.”
Elise was about to say something when Levi came out of the hallway. He wrapped his arm around her and pulled her into him. “She is fine.” He said.
“I wasn’t talking to you.” the policeman spat. He had a gut feeling that Levi was not a good man. He didn’t like the idea of leaving someone like Elise alone with him.
“It's all right Officer Landry. Levi is a guest in my home. You said you are here for a wellness check.”
“Yeah, one of your neighbors called. They said they heard a lot of sounds and such coming from your house last night. I would have been here sooner, but it has been a busy shift.”
“Well as you can see, she is perfectly fine.” Levi spoke up.
Officer Landry glanced around at the complete destruction of the house. “I can clearly see you are all right, but why is your door broken down? Anyone could just walk right in. Not to mention all the other destruction around this place.”
Elise could feel her face turning red. She did not know what to say. Levi came to the rescue. “Well, Elise here has her heart set on remodeling, so she started demolition. As for the door, I don’t know exactly what happened.”
Elise smiled meekly as she nodded her head. She hoped he would by it. It was a flimsy lie but she had no other explanation. “That’s okay I guess.” The officer responded. She could see from the skeptical look on his face that he was not buying it, but as he could see she had no harm done to her.
Officer Landry approached Elise. He pulled out a card and handed it to her. “This has my number if you ever need anything you can call me.” he looked up at Levi who was much taller than both Elise and himself. He looked back at Elise. “You can just call if you need someone to talk to as well.”
“Okay that is enough. You checked in now it is time to go.” Levi said in aggravated voice. He was trying to remain calm, but the police officer was trying his patience.
“I would advise you not to speak that way to me.”
Elise could sense that this was getting out of hand. Instinctively she propelled her grace outward. An ability that all angels have in common. The effect of which calmed the man down significantly. He became relaxed.
“It was very kind of you to come check on me. Thank you for stopping by, but as you can see, we have a lot to do.” Elise said as she led him to the door.
“Alright. Remember to call me if you need anything” He stepped over the broken door and left the house. Elies looked around her home. Several of the walls were missing chunks of plaster, the living room furniture was ripped to shreds, in the kitchen the table was broken, some of the cabinets had broken off the wall, and her countertops had huge cracks running through them.
Levi followed her as she inspected the guest bedroom. It was just as much a mess as the rest of her house. Finally, she went back to her room and sat down on the mattress which was laying on the floor in the middle of the broken bed frame. The whole room was covered in goose feathers.
She sat silently thinking to herself. ‘Wow. I mean wow! Last night was amazing, but I never thought that we would cause so much damage. I guess I should have expected it though. I am an angel, and he is a demon. Why wouldn’t we be destructive together. This is going to take weeks to get repaired. This could be a great opportunity though. I can change up the floor plan. Yeah, maybe this is a chance to have a fresh start.’
“What are you thinking little angel?” Levi asked as he sat down beside her.
“I am thinking I need to make a new floor plan for my house. Because if we keep doing this, I obviously will not have a decent place to live.”
Levi smiled as he asked “How can I help?”
While repairs were being done on Elises house she spent most nights at Levi’s place. They did not stay at the house where he had thrown the party the night they first met. Instead, he had taken her to a spacious loft apartment with a very minimalist design. Infact the only piece of furniture in that whole large room was a bed placed in the middle of the floor. It worked well because her wings could fully open. However, the walls all took a beating. One night they decided to stay at her place again, and though they tried to be careful they still managed to break a few things. So the repairs had to start up again.
One night after she a long day at the nursing home, she and Levi were in the bath together when she heard her phone ring. She slowly got out of the tub and answered it. “Hello?”
“Where the hell are you?” It was Michael.
“Umm? "Elise was shocked he had used a phone. He never had in the past. Normally if he couldn’t find her at her house, he would just go look for her at her usual places till he had found her. This time though he could not find her, so he had called.
“Answer me?”
“I am um...”
“Fine don’t tell me, we can talk about it when you get here?”
“I am kind of busy.”
“Doing what?”
“Umm”
“Get you butt home now!”
“What if I was out of town, I couldn’t get home that fast.”
“Are you out of town?”
“Well, no”
“Then home now.” he hung up.
Elise walked back to the tub and got in; sitting in-between his legs and leaning her back into his chest.
“Did you hear that?” Demons, like angels, had very acute hearing.
“Yes.” He said as he kissed her shoulder.
“I don’t know why he is acting like this. He has never been so bossy. To me he has always been like a kind older brother.”
“Well, do you think you should go find out what is wrong?”
“Yes, I’ll go. But, in my own sweet time. I am not looking forward to seeing him.”
“Yeah, I figured.”
“I just don’t get how he thinks it is okay to lie to me my whole life.”
“He has always been a dick.”
Elise smiled. Levi began to kiss up the sides of her neck and then her jaw till he found her lips. The two moved to the bedroom where things turned passionate. Then her phone rang again. She knew right away who it was.
She got up and turned off her phone. Then she turned and walked back to the bed giving Levi her come and get me eyes. After they romped in the sheets, she decided she should try to drag herself away from him.
“I have to go.”
“I would say I’ll come with you, but I have a very strong feeling Michael will not be happy to see me. Especially if he learns how found I am of his niece.” He said the last bit as he slapped her butt. She was getting up to get dressed.
“Oh, so you are fond of me?” She said playfully.
“I think you know that by now.”
She pulled her scrubs from work back on and turned to face him. “Well, that is good since I am fond of you.”
They started to kiss again and it began to get heated, but Elise pulled away.
“I am sorry. I Don’t want to go but I have too.”
“I know I know.”
He leaned in to give her another kiss and she gratefully took it. The two had a hard time not giving into passion. Neither of them had ever had anyone make them feel this way. Levi had slept with thousands, but none compared to Elise.
This time Levi reeled it in. “You said something about going.”
“Right, I did.”
Levi walked with her down the stairs from his loft. She asked him when he first brought her here why he hadn’t chosen to stay at his home in the quarter. Levi had replied, “I am not having sex with anyone but you and that requires space seeing as your wings have a habit of springing free.”
She had blushed at that comment. Then the thought popped into her head had he had other women here too? She didn’t like the idea of rolling around with him in a place other woman had shared with him. So, she asked.
“Oh no.” He answered. “Before you this has been my quite place. I have never brought anyone here. Not even my kids have been here.”
That made her happy. She liked the idea of having something that he only shared with her.
They were now standing in the downstairs area of the loft. He looked at her. “Do you want to take my bike?”
“Ummm...”
“It’s alright I don’t mind. I have another vehicle. Besides I am a demon. We can poof places.”
“Well if you are sure I guess so.”
Levi grabbed the keys and walked with her to the elevator. They went down to the parking garage. There was his Indian Dark Horse. He handed her the keys. As she took them the two shared one last kiss, Then she got on the bike and headed home.
