31. Quitting

The rest of Elise’ morning went by as it normally did. She kept busy helping the other residents. Then at lunch she went to visit with Margret.

“So, Elise are you going to tell me why I missed seeing you yesterday? Would it be that Levi you keep talking about?”

Elise smiled. “Yes.” She always loved talking to Margret. It didn’t matter if her whole life was in disarray; Margret always brought her back from that.

“So, go on tell me what happened.”

“What do you mean?”

“You can't fool me. I can tell when something is wrong.”

“Nothing is wrong.”

“Angels shouldn’t lie.”

“Hey, keep your voice down.”

“Even if anyone could overhear us, no one here would believe you are what you are. They would just assume that I was being sweet. So angel, go on and tell me what happened that has you so distracted.”

Elise thought about keeping it to herself, if she was going tell Margret she would have to tell her everything. How would she take it? Elise tried to weigh the consequences and possible outcomes of letting Margret in or keeping her out.

“I won’t tell anyone. You know that by now, don’t you?”

Elise knew she was right. Margret had never spoken a word about Her, Michael, or any of the angels she had met. She was a steel vault.

“Okay.” She decided. “I will tell you. I have to start at the beginning and there is a lot so please don’t respond until I am done, okay?”

“Alright.”

Elise told her everything that had happened since her birthday.

“That is all of it.” She concluded “What do you think.”

“Well, you were not kidding. You have been through a lot. To think, I had no idea that Levi was a demon?”

“Is that all you have to say?”

“No, I was just surprised. He did not seem evil when we met, and from your account I would have to say that he sounds inherently good.”

“I agree, I cannot understand why Michael has vilified him. Anyway, about my current circumstances, what do you think?”

“I think Sean had it coming. He always seemed off to me. I guess I was right. I really don’t think you did anything wrong. As for you wondering why bad people are allowed to live, I guess to show how people can also be really good but that is just my guess.”

“And what do you think about Michael disappearing all of the sudden?”

“It is anyone's guess why he left, but I don’t think it matters. You have a good head on your shoulders so I wouldn’t worry about him.”

Elise still had a small frown on her face. “Listen to me, I think you should forget about all of this. This may go against everything Michael taught you, but you were given a weapon that can sever a soul from a human body. I do not believe that you would be given that gift if you were not meant to use it. Why else would you have it?”

“It is not just that I now have the means to kill whomever I see fit. I am overwhelmed to know that aside from my father and the creator I am now the most powerful. Wielding this much power bares a crushing weight of responsibility. It is no wonder to me now that my father relies on Michael to tell him what to do.”

“That is true. However, Michael would rather see you hide your gifts under a bushel. I believe that you should do whatever your heart tells you to do until you know the reason why you were gifted with an all-powerful weapon. Yes?”

“Yeah, I guess.”

“Now stop moping. Call Levi and for heaven's sake go have some fun. This is not, in my opinion, the place where a young women should be spending all of her time.”

“I am not young.”

“Well, you are compared to Michael or any of your other uncles.”

“True.”

“So, please go have fun, and don’t worry about me. In fact, I am asking you for once to do what makes you happy. If that is being with Levi then go be with him.”

“But you are my friend, I don’t want to just leave you here alone.”

“Well write to me then. You can fill me in on all your adventures away from this place. In fact, I want you to resign today.”

“How long have you been feeling this way.”

“A long time. I could never think of a compelling enough reason to convince you to go out and live your life. Now that you have Levi, I know you will be happy.”

“But...”

“No buts. "Elise was shocked with the old lady in front of her. She didn’t want to leave her friend, but she also did not want to upset Margret. She decided to appease her.

“Okay, I can do that. But you should expect a lot of letters.”

“Good. I had better.”

“Now give me a hug. Then go and tell Mary you quit, and call that Levi on your way out.”

Elise got up and Margret did as well. The two women hugged for a long time. As Margret pulled away Elise gave her a kiss on the cheek. “I love you”

“I love you too. Now go on, get.” Elise left to go and find Mary. She did not have to look long to find her.

“Mary, I know this is short notice, but I quit.”

“What?”

“Yes, I am sorry, but I cannot stay here any longer.” Elise turned and walked away. As she did she pulled out her phone and called Levi.

“Elise?”

“Hey, I want to see you. Could you come over to my house?”

“I would like that. After you get off work sound good?”

“No, now. I am on my way home.”

“Playing hookey are we now?”

“Nope, I quit.”

“Oh, wow.”

“Yep, so are you in? There is somethings I want to do with you, and I don’t see the point of waiting.”

“I’ll be there as soon as I can.”
