29. Shock

As she stood over Sean, Elise still could not completely process what had just happened. Her thoughts drifted. What was she holding onto? She turned her gaze from Sean’s lifeless body to see what was in her hand. It was her double-sided sword. She lifted it slowly back over her shoulder and put it away. As she did, she noticed something moist on her dress. She pressed a finger to it, and it came away red with Sean’s blood. As she looked over herself, she was grateful that she had chosen a black dress. The small amount of blood she had gotten on her would not be noticeable.

Elise started to panic. She needed to get out of there or hide. Any second an angel would be coming to collect Sean’s soul and deliver him to hell. At least she assumed that is where he would be headed.

She heard the flapping of wings and she jumped into action. She moved quickly. Hopping over Sean’s corps, she opened the door, stepped through, and closed it again just in time. She could hear the angel on the other side of the door. He was talking to himself. “Wow dude, you are toast. Looking over your life I can see you had this coming. You’re a real mess though. Who in this age uses a sword?”

Elise gritted her teeth. She hoped that this angel wouldn’t go blabbing about this mysterious sword death to others. It could trace back to her. She started trying to rationalize what she had done. She told herself that he deserved it. It was better for women everywhere that he was gone. Despite her arguments however she could not help feeling that what she had done was wrong. She was not supposed to be killing. It wasn’t her place.

Elise took a breath. She needed to Think this through. Whether or not she ended up being in trouble with the angels, she did not want to be in trouble with the humans as well. ‘I need to get to Levi. He will know what to do.’ she thought to herself. Now she was regretting not bringing her phone. She had thought it would be a hassle holding a clutch all night. Now she would have to search through the party to find him.

She moved quickly back to the party. She hoped no one would stumble across Sean’s body while she was gone. Elise weaved through the crowd making sure to not brush against anyone. She did not want any blood to rub off on one of the many white garments. She finally found Levi after what seemed like an eternity. She let out her breath and quickly gasped in another. She did not realize that she had been holding her breath since she had left to find him.

Levi excused himself from the people he was talking to. He could see she was upset.

“What's wrong? Where did you go?”

“Levi come with me. I need your help.” She tried to pull him.

“Calm down and tell me what happened.”

“No, we need to go now please.” Elise needed to take care of the body. She had pushed any feelings of guilt and remorse aside. Her only thought now was for self-preservation. She had to hide what she had done. She could sort the rest out later.

“Elise?”

“Sean was here.”

“That creepy guy from your work?”

“Yes, that one.”

“So?”

“Well, I um, I did something.”

“What did you do?”

“Look can you please just come with me.” Elise could not say it aloud in the middle of the party. Seeing how distressed she was, Levi agreed to come without questioning her further. They weaved back through the crowd. Elise paused again with her hand on the handle before she opened the door. Levi walked past her into the room.

He glanced around the room until he saw what was causing Elise to be upset. He walked up to the lifeless body. As he examined it, he could plainly see that she had used her divine weapon. He looked up at Elise. She was staring, transfixed on Sean. He went up to her cupping her face in his hands, so she was looking at him. “It will all be okay.”

She nodded. He went out for a moment and returned with two identical young men. “Elise these are my sons Baylor and Saxon.” They waved hello but she didn’t acknowledge them. Ever since she had returned to the room where she had murdered Sean, she could not think about anything else.

“Take care of this. I want no evidence and I want it done discreetly.” He said to the twins. While they got to work Levi returned to Elise’ side. He could see that she was in a state of shock. He decided it would be best to get her away from there.

“Elise, I think we have been here long enough let's go back to the loft.”

Elise said nothing, but she let him lead her back to the car. Levi tried several times to engage her while they drove to the loft, but Elise heard nothing. She stayed silent as he helped her out of the car and led her up to the room. He kept trying to tell her it was okay, and that he probably deserved it.

It did not matter what he said though she just remained silent. Eventually he stopped trying to get her to speak. He waited, watching her in case she needed him. After hours of sitting in silence she looked at him. Finally, she opened her mouth to speak. “Levi, I need to go home.”
