Chapter 146

Cassie

My fingers shook as I pressed the button that would take this from call to video call , the other hand went to fluff my much shorter much blonder short hair around my face.

But with my face free of makeup and dressed in my comfiest pjs , with the tiny sausage dogs dotted all over them, I knew I didn’t look exactly good,

More mumsy then sultry siren.

I heard his startled inhale of breath before his face flickered to life on the screen.

He looked exactly the same, a little drawn around the eyes but the years had been much kinder to my husband than me. Especially the last few months.

“Hi.” Suddenly awkward, I gave him a half hearted smile.

His in contrast was a dazzling flash of white even teeth, dimples popping in his stubble lined cheeks. “Fuck I’d forgotten how beautiful you are.” He murmured in a voice that I could barely make out. His eyes seemed to rove all over my face.

“Thank-“

“The new hair is nice.” He cut me off.

Nice? My eyebrows shot upwards. People said nice when they didn’t like something. Defensively I touched the short locks.

“You don’t like it?” I asked and hated the tone of my voice because it shouldn’t matter if he liked it or not. I liked it and that was all that mattered.

“Like it? No.” He shook his head. “I love it.” He added quickly. “But then I love how you look all the time. You could do anything and I would still think you were the most beautiful woman in the world.”

Blushing, I forced a smile to curve my lips up. “Thank you. That’s sweet.” My eyes darted everywhere but at his smiling face on the screen. I didn’t know why I was so nervous about talking to him but I suddenly was. I didn’t know what to say.

Hell, what was a woman meant to say to her husband, her children’s father who just so happened to be her half rejected mate and a king.

Hey, how you doing? Just wouldn’t cover it.

The thought made me smile and I had to stifle the giggle that threatened to erupt for my lips with the back of my hand.

Julian’s eyebrows shot up. “Something funny my love?”

I shook my head but couldn’t help the snort laugh that escaped my lips. Mortified, I slammed my hand over my lips.

“Tell me the joke Cassie.”

I shook my head again. “So the boys-“

“Are fine.” He nodded his head. “You told me ,remember. Maybe next time we call I can speak to them. I’ve missed them.” His eyes bored into mine. “I’ve missed you as well.”

“I have-“

“You don’t need to say it.” He said quickly. “I just wanted you to know that I miss you and the boys every day. My life is empty-“ he gave a mirthless chuckle. “I still reach for you every morning when I wake up.” His eyes , so dark and brooding ringed with his thick lashes met mine unblinking. “And every night.”

“I miss you too.” I blurted out with a blush.

“Then tell me when I can see you.”

“You’re seeing me now.”

He let out a grumble of pure annoyance. “I meant in person Cassie. I need to touch your skin.” He mumbled. “I just want to hold you.”

I shook my head. “I can’t do that.”

I’d known this was a bad idea. I had known it would cause me nothing but more heartache but I had done it anyway.

“I’m sorry I just want you back in my life.” He muttered and there was a low growling note to it. One that hit me somewhere in the lower belly.

I squirmed on the bed as need filled me. The scent of my own arousal filling my nostrils. One little growl from him and I was already falling back under his spell.

Bad bad idea.

Risking a glance at Julian I found him staring into the camera intently. The same lust that was flowing through me was tightening his face.

“Undo those buttons.” He ordered , “I need to see you. All of you.”

I hesitated. This was the reason Ian had given me the phone for,  but I was pretty sure he had been joking. Julian wasn’t joking though.

I shook my head but my fingers lifted to the tiny top button.

Julian leant back and his own smooth tanned chest came into view making my mouth water with need. That face, coupled with that body just wasn’t fair.

“I didn’t realise you and Ian had the same tattoo on you-“ I began to say and froze as Julian’s eyebrows slammed down.

“How do you know about Ian’s tattoos?” He asked in a low gravelly voice.

My buttons half undone I stopped and stared at him. Jealousy oozed from him, so strong that I could almost smell it through the call which was impossible.

“How do you think?” I asked tartly. “I saw them of course.”

“What the fuck?” The lust disappeared , replaced by rage. Rage that he had no right to feel. Not when he had kept a mistress all these years.

Not when-

“Just how close are you and Ian getting?” He asked his voice icy and clipped.

“Probably not as close as you and Megan.” I made a show of looking at my watch even though I didn’t really see the time. “I need to go.”

“Cassie-“ Julian’s voice was desperate. “Please don’t , please.”

I ended the call before I could have second thoughts and flopped back onto the pillows with my tits half hanging out.

Why did he have to be like that? Why did he have to be so…. Julian like?

Every time we spoke , or tried I was just left with an empty pit in my stomach.

It couldn’t go on.

The phone in my hand rang shrilly and I ended the call.

Julian phoned five more times before I turned the phone off completely and closed my eyes in the lonely blissful silence of the hotel room.
