Chapter 250
Cassie
“Keep still you big baby. I need to change the dressing.” I eyed the ragged, stained cloth before beginning to unwrap it.
Four days and Ian hadn’t let me look at his injuries once. He said he was fine, Nothing to worry about but as I unwrapped the ratty bandage and almost gagged I knew differently.
Something wasn’t right here. I could smell it. Even if I didn’t have better senses than a human I would be able to smell it.
The giant gash on Ian’s forearm was infected.
The last part of the bandage stuck, sticking onto his skin.
“Just rip it off.” Ian’s eyes didn’t even flick down to the arm. He continued to stare at me. His eyebrows knitted together. “It doesn’t even hurt.” He added.
I flicked my eyes up to him. “That’s not a good thing.” Muttering under my breath I eased it off and lifted his arm to my face. Sniffing loudly. My nose wrinkled as the smell assaulted me.
Sickly sweet and rotten.
“This isn’t good at all.” As gently as I could I probed at the edges which were seeping gunk and turning slightly black. “Why didn’t you tell me it was this bad Ian?”
He shrugged. “It only hurt for the first day. I just thought it was healing when it stopped. It’s not even that deep my wolf should have been able to manage the healing without me putting that look on your face.”
I couldn’t help it, I stared at him with my mouth open. “Goddess, Ian for a smart guy you’re really fucking dumb.” I bit back all the horrible things I wanted to unleash on him and chewed on my lip. “This bandage is little more than a rag and you didn’t even clean it out. It’s just filth on filth.” I probed over the edges again, his skin was always warm because of what we were but his skin was hot.
Boiling hot in fact.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if you had some thing stuck in there.” With my other hand I reached for his forehead. “You’re a little hot.”
“Just a little?” He joked. He did that at the weirdest times, I had noticed or maybe this was the real him and the stoic serious man standing behind Julian had all been an act.
I honestly didn’t know. More than likely all of it was true and Ian was just a bit of a chameleon.
“Not the time to joke around.” I would have given him a slap but there really wasn’t one part of his body that I could innocently touch that didn’t have some kind of cut on it.
When you risk your life to save kids and have a building come down on your head, you get a free pass in my book.
Except I wasn’t going to give him a pass about that damn infected arm. Ian had battle field experience, I knew he had served and even if he hadn’t. He’d been in enough scrapes with Julian to know better. It was almost like he was asking to be infected.
Julian. For a second my eyes closed and I pressed my fingers to my lips as I remembered the feel of my husbands lips on mine. The tender but forceful way he took ownership of my mouth.
The fingers I pressed to my lips, had Ian’s arm juice all over them and the sticky smelly mess made me physically gag.
Rushing over to the sink I scrubbed at them, tearing off the gloves and throwing them in the bin I reached for another pair.
“Well that was fun to watch.” He teased , his eyes lighting up. “Taking a trip down memory lane?”
“No.” This time when I got back to him I did swat at his shoulder. Which was like hitting a rock. “And stop changing the subject. Why didn’t you get me to look at this sooner?”
His eyes darted away. “I told you, I thought it was fine.”
My eyes rolled. He was lying but I just didn’t know why he was lying. What possible reason could he have?
“So what do we have to do? Give me a shot and dig whatever is in there out?” Another shrug. “Can we make it quick though I have somewhere I need to be shortly.”
“Then you best rearrange.”
He stared at me with his mouth open. “What do you mean?” He asked. “Just dig it out.”
“I don’t have the medication here Ian, this is a small town practice and not a hospital. You need a hospital.”
“I don’t need pain medication. I can take you digging away in my arm for a few minutes, Cassie. Just get on with it”
Ignoring him i reached for clean bandages, and began to clean the wound as best I could. “As much as I’d love to cause you a little pain for being a complete pain in my ass Ian , I can’t. This need to be seen by a doctor in the hospital.”
“You’ve been a doctor in the hospital.” He shuddered. “I hate hospitals Cassie. Absolutely hate them.”
“And now I’m a small town Doctor. Either go and get it seen to properly or lose the arm.” It was my turn to shrug.
His eyebrows shot up. “Lose the arm , you can’t be serious?”
Securing the bandage with a little tug that made him hiss I smiled sweetly down at him. “I mean worst case scenario you could die.”
For a second Ian stared up at me and then he laughed. “Your bedside manner sucks Cassie. You’re just mean.”
“And you are a big baby scared of the hospital. Go.” I ordered pointing to the door. “My actual patients will be here soon. And Ian?”
He paused. “Either ring me if they are keeping you in or come back here after ok? I have to stay later today but I want to talk to you about something in private.”
