Chapter 261
Julian
She was on her way I knew that but I couldn’t help the nerves that gripped me. From behind the curtain I could hear the hubbub of hundreds of voices. The cathedral was full, not just with nobility from my kingdom but also from other realms as well as normal people. Because Cassie was a normal person.
And a fucking extraordinary woman.
It only made sense that our second wedding was witnessed by everyone.
Plus I wanted the whole world to see me pledge myself to her once and for all.
Properly this time.
This was it for us, I knew that. One more fuck up and I would never ever win her back again. Cassie had proved more than once that she was strong enough to leave and build a life for herself.
In fact she built a really good life for herself without any help from me at all. She allowed me into her world and not the other way around.
My eyes went to the thick heavy drape as the voices from the other side dimmed to a low roar. Clearly someone had just arrived. Someone who shocked everyone else.
It wouldn’t be Cassie though.
Not yet.
She wasn’t due, If she turned up at all. I knew from the people I had sent to help her get ready that she had got on the private plane I had sent but that was the last update I had.
In front of me, I twisted my hands together nervously.
What if she changed her mind? What if she got on that plane , got off and disappeared with my sons , never to be seen again.
“You look nervous?” The corner of the curtain flicked back and Ian stepped through. Looking dashing in his tuxedo. Which matched mine completely apart from the bow tie colour.
“Worried your bride won’t show up?” With an easy laugh he walked towards me and then surprisingly thrust out his hand for me to shake.
I hesitated only a second before taking it and his nose wrinkled at the feel of my sweaty palm.
“You’re going to ruin her dress with that much sweat on your hand your highness.” He wiped his hand down his pant leg.
My head snapped up with his words. “She’s here?” I breathed out a sigh of relief because of course she was here if he was talking about her dress. Unless she was going to pull to run away bride shit.
“Close by, yes.” He nodded. “Did you think she wasn’t going to come?”
“It did cross my mind.” I gave the smallest one shouldered shrugs. “It’s not like I deserve this chance?”
Ian stared at me unblinking. “No, you probably don’t but she loves you and you love her. You're married now, so it not like you are ever going to leave each other.” His eyes darted to the curtain. “This is sweet of you though.”
“She deserves the wedding of her dreams because she is the woman of mine.” I said simply.
“She does. Although I think she’s going to be shocked at the amount of people out there.” Reaching up he ruffled his hair. “Even I was shocked.” He chuckled. “Although maybe not as shocked as they were at seeing me as your groomsman.”
“You are my best friend Ian. You have always been loyal. Who else would I have to stand next to me?”
He didn’t get a chance to answer as his pocket chimed once. Smiling, he looked up at my face instead of looking at his pinging phone.
“Ready?” He asked, cocking his head to the side.
Instantly nerves rippled through me. Not because I didn’t want to marry the love of my life but because I was suddenly afraid that I wouldn’t be the man she deserved.
“Julian?” Ian prompted softly and I nodded.
Stepping out from behind the curtain I took a shaky breath and turned to face the expectant crowd. There was no sign of Cassie or my boys yet but I could see Cathy and the rest of our staff rushing towards their seats. My old house keeper threw me a smile that said it all.
I was a lucky man.
Clearing my throat I took a step forward and all eyes turned towards me.
“Ladies and Gentleman thank you for being here with me today.” My voice turned croaky and I had to clear it again. I was king and used to giving public speeches but all of my rehearsed words died away.
“There has been a lot of mistakes made since I took Casandra as my wife. I kept her secret because-“ a small chuckle erupted from me. “Cassie.” I amended quickly. “She would hate that I called her Cassandra.”
A low murmur swept around the room.
“I didn’t realise how important she was to me at first and that’s all on me.” I continued. “I didn’t realise how much I loved her until she was almost taken from me. I let myself be guided in the wrong direction because I was afraid of those feeling’s .” I threw up a hand. “And none of that is Cassies fault. It’s mine. When she left us a few months ago.” Tears prickled the backs of my eyes. “I realised the truth. That no one comes between a man and his mate. I love my wife and I am the luckiest man alive that she loves me back.”
Music began to swell, soft at first but growing louder by the second.
“Today is all about making a sacred oath to my wife in front of you all and the goddess but it’s more than that. It’s a vow to my wife and my family that I will never ever take them for granted again-“
The smallest of rustles and I trailed off mid sentence, my eyes darted towards the double doors at the end of the aisle.
All the breath left my body , my heart forgot to beat as she stepped forward. Both of my boys, looking so strong and handsome in their matching suits on either side of her. Holding her hands tightly as they walked towards me.
It was Cassie herself that took my breath away though. The dress, white and silver lace which hugged her curves and then flared out , suited her so perfectly in it simplicity because a woman as beautiful as she was didn’t need the fancy stuff.
She was perfect the way she was.
And she was mine.
The crowd stood up, murmurs of approvals filled the air s the music grew louder and she began to the long walk towards me.
And it was a long walk and it was taking to long.
I knew I should wait for them to get to me but I couldn’t wait.
I stepped forward , rushing down to meet her even though it wasn’t the done thing.
Catching her face between my hands I kissed her straight on the mouth, to the amazement of everyone around us. I didn’t care if this was proper or not.
I didn’t care about anything apart from telling my wife one thing.
“I love you.”
