Chapter 259

Cassie

I barely heard anything more he said for the rest of the night. It was only the words “as my queen.” That echoed around my head again and again.

Did I want that? Did I want to be queen?

I glanced at him as he sat with his arms around our sons reading them a story and realised that I didn’t have a choice.

I couldn’t ask him to give up his throne for me, no matter how much I liked my life here. It wouldn’t be fair on him. He said he would give it up happily but I knew in time he would come to hate me for it. I never wanted that to happen.

So I didn’t want to give up everything for me but neither did I want to be just a queen. I’d found my purpose in life here. Because it was small towns like this where I was needed. Not just as a doctor but as their friend as well and no matter how I loved my mate I wasn’t ready to give it all up either.

I had to have more in my life than just jewels and lavish balls otherwise I would go crazy.

Staring down at the hands in my lap I felt the sudden weight of his gaze on me and lifted my eyes to meet his. The boys were sleeping now and the book he had been reading had fallen forgotten into his lap.

“Cassie.”

I shifted under the weight of his gaze. Suddenly uncomfortable.

From the kitchen Ian and Yanna who had been doing dishes and chatting together fell silent, it was like the whole world stood still and waited for me to say something.

“You’re having second thoughts.” Julian’s voice was low and kind of terrified and I wanted to rush to him and tell him I wasn’t. Even though that wasn’t entirely true.

“No.” I mumbled.

“Ok let’s get these boys into their beds.” Yanna said in a sing song voice. “Ian help me with them.”

“I can-“ Julian began to say and Ian stopped him with a shake of his head.

“You have the rest of your life to tuck your children into bed Julian.” He murmured. “Save your marriage first.” He winked and before I knew it both Yanna and Ian had disappeared upstairs carrying my sons.

I knew why they had done it. They wanted to give us some time alone to discuss whatever it was on my mind.

“What is going on Cassie?” Julian leant forward. “You’ve been quiet since I said I would give everything up for you.”

My eyes flashed. “I don’t want you to give up the crown for me Julian. It’s your birthright.” I shrugged, “it’s our sons birthright as well.”

He fell silent for a second before sighing heavily. “My fate is to be by your side. My job, my only and most important job is to make you happy and to make up for the last few years. I can’t do that if you are keeping things bottled up.”

For several long seconds I could do nothing but stare at him. He was right of course. If this was to work then I needed to be honest.

We both did.

I sighed. “I don’t know if I can be just queen Julian.”

His eyebrows shot up. “What do you mean just a queen?”

“I mean I’m not the kind of woman who can be happy just sitting around and doing nothing. I want to be a hands on my mum.”

“Then the boys come home from school every day.” He said quickly. “It seems to be working wonders for them here. No more boarding school.”

“And my work-“

He cut me off. “You don’t need to quit work because you are queen. You are my queen now and you work. Cassie.” Standing up he came to stand right in front of me. Reaching down he grabbed my hands and pulled me to my feet. “Cassie you can be any kind of queen you want to be and I’ll be happy as long as I can share the life you build with you.”

I stared at him , my face tilted upwards as I mulled over his words.

“Do you mean that?”

In answer he caught up my hand and pressed it over his heart. Right where my teeth marks adorned his skin. I could feel his bite marks on my skin as well, every time I moved .

“Yes.” His hand dropped down and teased over the edge of my zipper but he didn’t pull it down. “I’ve claimed you now Cassie, and you’ve claimed me. This is it for us “ instead of pushing down against my core, he clutched me to him. Holding me so close to his body that I could barely breathe.

“Yes it is.” Leaning my head on his chest I took a deep breath. “I guess we are both lost now. But I don’t know what happens next. How do I just go back to being queen after everything?”

Julian’s chin came down to rest on the top of my head, “our people love you. They have always loved you so I guess we start with the truth.” A kiss against my hair, “and a welcome home, coming our ball.”

I stayed silent.

“Actually maybe something else completely is in order,”

The way he said it made me tense, untangling myself from his arms I searched his face. “What are you talking about it.”

“Nothing.” He shook his head with a smile.

“Julian.” I warned because I didn’t believe that for a second. My husband and mate was up to something.

“It’s nothing bad , I promise you.” He took a deep breath. “But I do need to leave soon so I can arrange everything,”

My heart sank. “You’re leaving?”

“A few days apart and then never again I promise you,” his eyes glowed with the power of his wolf. “We will never be apart again Cassie but if we are to really start over I need to do this.” Over and over again his lips brushed against mine. “We need to do everything properly.”
