Chapter 249

Julian

I should have known it was my wife trying to get herself killed by running into a collapsing building. I should have known because it was so something she would do.

Only it hadn’t clicked into my head that it was her until she turned like a wild cat and demanded I let her go.

Maybe it was because I wasn’t used to seeing her with her short blonde bob, when I was still expecting long dark tresses.

“Julian.” The screaming angry scared voice was gone as her eyes darted away from my face and then back again. “What are you doing here?”

My eyebrows slammed down. My eyes drifted down her body which was encased in a simple black dress that was smeared with blood and other things. There was a gash and slits all over it thanks to the glass and debris that had erupted outward.

I sniffed, there were so many slashes in that dress that I wanted to make sure she wasn’t bleeding anywhere but the air was so full of the scent of blood that it was impossible.

“I would guess the same thing you are.” Dropping her to her feet, I let my hands slide down her arms. “Are you hurt?” I asked.

“Let go of me Julian, I need to help people.”

What were the odds that she would be here? That we would both be here at the same time? It was almost like some divine power had made our paths cross.

“You need to help your lover Ian you mean-“ the words came tumbling out of my mouth. And like an absolute fool I let them.

For a second her eyes widened and then she threw back her hand and slapped me right across the face.

A gasp went up. “Is that the queen?” Someone asked,

“She’s been trying to help since it happens and -“

I drowned them out. All of the voices and just concentrated on my wife.

“I’m sorry.” I said in a hushed whisper as I forced her arm down to nestle between our bodies. “I didn’t mean to do that. I know you aren’t Ian’s lover.” Curling my other arm around her waist I drew her closer to my body.

“No I'm not.” Cassie was so close now that she had to strain her neck up to look at me. “Because I am true to my-“

Slanting my lips over hers I silenced her. Kissing away the grime on her lips until I could taste the very essence of her.

One second she was still and unresponsive in my arms and the next she melted. One arm curled up around my neck so I could deepen the kiss.

One second and I had my Cassie back. The woman I loved who had given me chance after chance. The mother of my sons.

But Cassie was so much more than that as well.

“I am true to you. And I’ll prove it to you. I can do that now I can-“ my arm still looped around her wait I turned us to the limo. The back door open and the back seat-

Empty.

Megan had gone.

Pursing my lips I blew out a breath. It didn’t matter, she wouldn’t be able to hide from me this time. I’d find her.

Following my gaze Cassie stiffened. “You brought her here didn’t you?” She asked in the smallest of voices.

I turned sharply, noting how bruised looking her lips were from my kiss. I so desperately wanted to catch them again.

To claim them over and over until she forgot her own name and was just mine, body and soul.

“Cassie-“

“We need to help these people.” Her voice was firm. “I need to help them Julian, that’s my job.”

She had a point there and it would do the people good to see their king and queen working side by side together as well. Silently I nodded my head.

“Ian.”  Cassie slipped from my arms easily as my second in command and one time friend climbed from the rubble. She rushed forward , falling down on her knees to help him and I could do nothing but watch as they rose to their feet. My wife checking him over and him batting her hands away and telling her to stop fussing.

They touched each other with familiarity and affection but not love or lust. More  like brother and sister than lovers. A relieved sigh tumbled from my lips.

“You’re highness?” A sooty blood encrusted hand touched my sleeve and I turned to find a little girl with the widest eyes I had ever seen in her ash white face staring up at me.

“You’re the king?”

Crouching down I nodded. “I am , what’s your name?”

“Penny.” She started to cry and my heart cried along with her. She was so small, so fragile and she had been through so much already. Only a few years older than my own boys.

“Where is your mama Penny?” I asked softly. “Or your dad?”

In answer she cried even more. Giant heaving sobs that shook her whole body.

Without thinking about it I scooped her up into my arms. “It’s ok Penny, we will find them together ok. I just need to-“ I turned to where Cassie had just been standing with Ian. So I could tell her what I was doing and that she wasn’t to run off anymore but she wasn’t there.

I frowned.

“Are you looking for someone as well?”

“Yes.” I muttered as I looked around and came back blank. There was no sign of my wife or Ian anywhere. It was like they had disappeared into thin air.

Again.

“Do you want to look for the queen as well?” Penny asked in a tiny voice. Her hands on my cheeks to turn my face back to her. “I can help you if you want?”

“That would be great thank you, but let’s find your mama first hey, Penny.”

I would find this girls parents , I would help these people wherever I could but I had seen Cassie now, I had tasted her lips again.

And I would find her.
