Chapter 260

Cassie

Three days went by and I barely heard from him. If it hadn’t been for the others and their sneaky phone calls and side wise looks and shared knowing smiles that made me not lose my damn mind.

Julian was up to something and my friends were in on it. Not that they were going to tell me anything, I had tried to wangle the truth out of them but they became all frowny and tight lipped when I asked.

So I gave up and threw myself into my work and to taking care of my children. Which usually kept my mind and my hands busy but this time around? It did little to help.

“Mummy?”

Looking down from where I was busy cutting potatoes for dinner I saw Noah tugging at my shirt. His open face smiling wildly.

“Yes darling.” Placing the knife down carefully. I swung him up into my arms and ruffled his hair with my kisses.  “Are you ok? Why aren’t you playing Lego with your brother.” I asked because that how I had left them. In a circle of little brightly coloured bricks of death. That had strewn across my living room floor by the big picture window that looked over the front garden.

Usually it was enough to keep them busy for a few few hours while I pottered about. But clearly not this time because one glance towards that window and there was no sign of my son.

In fact one look around the open plan room and I couldn’t see him anywhere. My eyes glued them selves to the front door which was open an inch and my stomach did a flip flop.

Both boys knew better than to go outside without telling someone. And no one had snuck in I would have heard them. So where the hell was Niall.

“Where is your brother Noah?” I tried to keep my voice was shaking but it was hard. I didn’t think we were in danger here but I couldn’t know for sure.

In my arms Noah shrugged. “He went outside,”

My heart and stomach lurched. “Alone?” Now my voice really did shake.

Was this going to be our lives again? This constant fear? Was this the cost of being mated to the king that I had to live in constant fear that my children were going to be taken and harmed?

I couldn’t live like that. I wouldn’t

“Cassie.” Ian swung the door open wide and stared across the space between us. My son perched happily on his shoulders so all I could see were his swinging chubby legs.

“I can smell your panic from here. Niall is fine. He is with me. You need to learn to relax a little. Everything is fine.” His eyes bored into mine. “There is no danger to you and the boys I promise. In fact.” His eyes narrowed. “Why don’t you and Noah come out here and wait with me.”

“Wait for?” I don’t get a chance to finish as Noah took my hand and began to tug me across the room towards the door.

“It’s a surprise.” Noah said gleefully.  “You just have to wait and then -“

“Ssssh.” Ian’s eyes flashed and Noah fell silent. Pressing a finger to his lips.

“So what is this surprise?” I aimed my question at Ian who just smirked.

“If I tell you then it’s not a surprise?”

In the distance I could hear the sound of an engine pulling into the long drive and my heart burst. “Is Julian?” I risked a glance at him. “Is Julian back.”

I couldn’t help the hope in my voice. It had only been a few days but I missed my mate. The marks he had left on my skin had already healed and part of me, a massive part wanted to feel his teeth in my body as he fucked me.

I squirmed and Ian flashed me a warning look which made me blush.

“Yeah enough of that your highness.” He hissed out of the corner of his mouth. “It’s not Julian.” He added. “It’s something so much better. I think you will agree.”

I couldn’t think of anything better than being with my mate , apart from being with my sons.

A sleek silver car pulled into view followed closely by another one and I squinted. Not that I could see anything through the darkly tinted windows.

“Trust me Cassie.” Ian mumbled as he took Noah’s hand from mine and lifted him into his arms. Ushering me forward.

The first car stopped and the driver appeared. Suited and booted with a giant bunch of exotic flowers in his arms. He padded around the car and came to a stop right in front of me.

“Your highness these are for you. From the king.” He lowered them enough for me to see his face and I recognised him straight away. He had been my driver and security once.

“I know you. I-“

His face cracked open in a smile. “I’m flattered you remembered your grace. Hopefully I’ll be your driver when you come home.” His eyes darted around my face. “If that suits you.”

“Of course it does and the flowers are beautiful. Julian didn’t have to send you all this way though. It must have been quite a drive.”

His eyes crinkled as he smiled.

“We didn’t drive your majesty. And there’s a card from the king. He would like you to read it first.” He gave a small bow and there it was. Nestled in the middle of those brightly coloured flowers. A small white envelope.

Plucking it from the stems I stared down at the writing on the front before ripping it open.

My love,

I know you have been wondering where I am and why I haven’t been in touch but I wanted our day to be a surprise for you.

I want to see you happy on our wedding day.

Now I know what you are going to say, that we have been married for years but those years were just practice. I want to marry you Cassie. And see you walk down the aisle towards me.

I want to do this properly this time and that’s why I have sent this gift to you because I know your special day wouldn’t be  complete without your friends there to see you.

Look up my love,

I’ll see you tomorrow if you will have me still.

Yours forever

Julian.

I looked up and burst into tears as first Forrest and then Cathy stepped out of the car, followed by a lot of my old staff and colleagues. Even the doctor who had nursed me back to health was there.

Cathy took a stumbling step forward and I rushed to meet her. Her old arms holding me as I sobbed. “There now child, there now. No more tears.” She swiped a thumb under my eyes. “You are getting married in the morning.”
