Chapter 266
Julian
“Your highnesses.” The woman stalked towards us, as comfortable on her skyscraper heels as I was on my bare feet. She crossed the marble foyer towards us in a flash so I only had a chance to smile lovingly down at my wife and the little frown that put a line between her eyebrows for a second before she was on us, with her too wide, too white smile.
Cassie had had a flash of jealousy for a second there. An unfounded one but one I kind of liked anyway which made me an asshole because I should want my wife and mate to have no doubts about me.
“It’s great to see you both and looking so happy-“ the blonde in front of us bobbed into a small curtsy. No easy feat in her ridiculous heels. “My name is-“
“Melinda Bennett.” I answered for her. “I know your work , my wife used to watch your documentaries.” I chuckled at Cassie's shocked look. “It’s the reason I asked for you personally.”
Melinda pulled herself to her full height and nodded her head towards Cassie. “I’m flattered ,your majesty. Shall we make a start? It’s just a small gathering and a few photographers. More are waiting to take family picture in-“
“A few weeks.” That had been the deal. They could have their short interview but any family portraits would have to wait until I had spent time with my family.
“Of course.” Turning with military precision she lead the way forward with us dawdling behind. Cassies nerves flowed from her, making her usually sweet scent almost bitter and I tightened my hand around her.
“Just say the word.” I hissed out of the corner of my mouth although I knew Melinda could hear me quite well. “And I’ll pull the king card and whisk you away. You don’t need to do this.”
In answer Cassie squeezed my fingers, but she didn’t have time to speak as the doors opened and the flashes blinded us for a second.
There was so many of them, that Cassie cried out and threw her hands up over her eyes. A growl rose out of my throat as I positioned myself between the vultures with cameras and my startled wife.
Instantly those flashes of light stopped.
“We are sorry-“
I didn’t say anything I just growled.
Half in front of us Melinda flapped her hands nervously. Almost like she knew they had fucked up and I was about to cut everything short before anyone had asked me a single question.
Which I was half tempted to do because ambushing my life was out of order.
“It’s ok.” Cassie whispered. “I was just startled.” Throwing me a smile, she was the one who stepped into the lions den first. Giving every person in there a warm hello as she led me to the seats set aside for us.
“Cassie.” Reluctantly I took my seat, her hand still gripped in mine.
She stood in front of me, blocking my view of the reporters that were waiting and lifted my chin up. “I am fine.” She said firmly before taking her seat. “Ready whenever you are.” She flashed another wide , fake smile to the waiting reporters who swarmed forward.
“I think-“ it was Melinda who spoke first, her voice louder than all the others. “Everyone here wants to know what happened between you and Megan , your old royal doctor, your highness.”
Bristling, I glanced at Cassie. Gauging her reaction. “I don’t think that’s a suitable question to ask us the day after-“
“It’s ok Julian.” Cassie said softly. “Me and my husband have had more than our fair share of troubles over the last years, most of which you guys have reported on.” She gave a tinkling laugh. “Megan was a snake in our midst, the king and his people have been fighting hard to find proof of her wrong doings for sometime but had to keep it a secret. Her crimes, and the crimes of her partner will be laid bare in a report that is being readied for you all shortly. The partner is in custody.” She took a deep breath and I stared at her with my mouth open. She was very well informed which meant someone had briefed her on the plane ride. “Megan will be apprehended and brought to justice.”
“Is there a reward for her capture?”
For a second Cassie looked shocked and then disgusted. “No,” she said firmly. “We are not going to hunt her down like an animal. Nothing excuses Megan’s past behaviour but she has not had an easy life. I am certain justice will be served though because you have a strong a capable king.”
I grinned widely. Not because she was flattering me but because she was the strong and capable one.
“Megan is in the past now, are there any questions about the future?”
There was a murmur of surprise from the reporters but my wife had nothing but my respect.
“Of course Miss-“
Cassies eyes flashed. “My title hasn’t been Miss for a very long time Melinda. “I don’t much like being called by royal title so it’s either Cassie or Dr-“
There she was, my fighting queen.
“I will be doctor to my patients or even Cassie. So I don’t think we should be any different.” She added with a wink and they laughed.
She was fabulous , my mate. It had just taken me so long to realise it.
“So you will be resuming duties as a doctor?”
“I can answer this one, I think.” I interrupted. “Yes she will. When we have spent some time as a family. We have two young children and are newly mated but I am sure Cassie will tell me when she wants to get started on all the plans we have made for bringing better health care to our people and our community.”
There was a hushed silence.
“Mated?” Someone whispered.
“Yes.” I said simply , turning towards Cassie I motioned for the silk around her slender throat. “My wife is now officially my mate. Show them my love.”
Slowly she unwound the blue silk, and a gasp went up at the wicked red mark I had left in her skin. It was so angry looking but I knew in time it would fade into a silvery crescent like the moon.
“Cassie is your queen, she is my queen as well but she is more than that she is also my true fated mate.” I met each set of eyes in turn I stood. “Now if you will excuse me, I wish to spend some alone time with my wife.”
They nodded their heads in approval. They knew that my need for her right now was painful but they didn’t need to know I had claimed her days ago. It didn’t make any difference, I needed to be with my mate alone to feel complete.
“Of course, thank you for seeing us. May we rearrange-“
“Yes.” I threw over my shoulder because I was already dragging my wife through the door.
“Did you just pull the king card on them mid interview?” Cassie laughed.
Whirling her around I crushed her to my body. “No I pulled the man totally in love with his mate card.” I brushed my lips against hers. “Now let’s go home and start living.”
