Epilogue

Cassie- 1 year later

“Are you sure you’re not going to join us this evening?” Julian asked from his place lounging on the bed, his arms were behind his head as he stared at me.

In the mirror I was sat in front of I smiled and shook my head. “Not this full moon no,” I said softly and went back to swiping the gloss over my lips. Apart from a little mascara it was the only make up I would wear tonight. Being happy had done wonders for my complexion. I was glowing.

But of course there might have been another reason for that. Smiling knowingly to myself I lowered my eyes.

Instantly Julian swung his legs from the bed, his hands on his knees as he stared at me.

“Any particular reason you don’t want to lead the run with me?”

I shrugged and kept my eyes downward. “Maybe I just feel like sitting this one out.”

“You haven’t felt like sitting anything out since you got your wolf back just after our second wedding.” Julian’s sigh was loud. “What’s going on? Is everything ok?”

There was so much worry in his voice that I couldn’t help but lift my eyes to him. The last thing I wanted was for him to worry about me when there really wasn’t anything to worry about.

His eyes met mine and widened in shock. Stumbling forward he fell to his knees in front of me. Grabbing hold of my hands.

“You don’t mean?”

“I-“

“You’re highness?” Cathy paused in the open doorway. Her face  was a mixture of apprehension and sadness. Instantly we were both on our feet.

“What’s happened? The boys?”

She shook her head, “the boys are fine.” Her voice, which was always so strong, faltered. “It’s Megan.”

My stomach twisted. It had been months since we had even heard anything about her. And it wasn’t from lack of trying to find her but she had disappeared. With her partner in crime rotting in prison, we didn’t know where else to look for her so the trail had gone cold.

Honestly it wasn’t like we had forgotten and more the fact that we had just tried to get on with our lives.

“What has she done this time.” Julian sounded resigned and honestly I couldn’t blame him for that. She might be gone from our lives but she was still hanging over us. A dark cloud in our sunny lives.

“She died.” Cathy whispered.

My head snapped up. “She’s dead?”

“A few months ago, it just took some time for her to be traced here.” Cathy wrung her hands in front of her. “She died shortly after giving birth to a daughter.”

My stomach twisted again but for a different reason this time. I’d hated Megan for so long but I had never wanted her dead.  I never wanted anyone dead.

“Her baby?” I whispered because my heart hurt. Julian shot me a look.

“Has been in an orphanage since she was born. It was only after they found out who Megan was and started to make calls that they realised who she was and who now has custody of the little girl.” Cathy lifted her eyes to Julian.

“You?” I asked him. “Made arrangements for her baby?”

He shrugged. “It was the first thing I did. The baby was never mine. We all knew that but I knew it was innocent in all of this and I knew Megan wouldn’t care for the child.” He implored me with his eyes. “I can find the baby a loving family and-“

I flung myself at him, wrapping my arms around his throat as I lifted myself up to my tiptoes to kiss him. “She has a loving family. She has us.” I whispered into his mouth. “I don’t think I’ve ever loved you more.”

Instantly he lifted me off my feet. “We don’t need to take her on. We don’t owe-“

“Of course we are taking her on, she deserves a loving family.” I hadn’t even thought about what would happen to Megan’s child but I knew now. She would join our family and I would love her like she was my own.

“Where is she now? Can we go and pick her up?” Untangling myself from my husband's arms I turned back to Cathy.”

“A doctor is downstairs with her right now.l didn’t know if I should send her away but it’s the same doctor that took care of you in your coma and I didn’t want to be rude.”

Next to me Julian stiffened. “Downstairs-“

Ignoring his panicked voice I tugged on his hand. “Let’s at least go and say hello.”

He muttered something under his breath but didn’t protest as we made our way downstairs and there in one of the more formal sitting rooms was the grey haired woman who had cared for me. And in her arms, asleep peacefully was the most adorable little baby dressed in the sweetest romper suit.

“You’re highnesses.”

“You don’t need to get up on our account.” I said quickly as she began to rise. “Let her sleep. Does she have a name?”

“Megan passed away before she could make her. The ladies in the orphanage that took care of her have been calling her Eve.”

“Eve.” Julian said. “It’s a pretty name.”

“I know she’s not yours by blood king Julian but the paper work is -“

“I know it’s legally binding.” He nodded. “I made sure it was, but I just wasn’t expecting it to be so sudden.”

“We will care and love for her.” I said quickly. I don’t know why it was so important for me to raise my enemies child but it was.

“It’s a lot of work Cassie, even with help and we aren’t prepared for another baby.” Julian shook his head.

“We can have everything we need in an hour and you know it Julian.” I reminded him.

“I just don’t want you to think you have to do this-“

“I want to do it plus what is one  more going to make. Of anything it will help me get ready for-“ I blushed.

“For?” His eyebrows shot up.

“For our family to go from four to six.” I whispered

“Six? You mean you’re pregnant?” He jumped to his feet and pulled me with him. Spinning me around. “Is that why you won’t shift now?”

Mutely I nodded because he was laughing so loudly that he wouldn’t be able to hear me anyway.

“Looks like our family will be complete. Two of each.” I managed to say.

“How do you know it’s a girl?” He sobered instantly.

I didn’t really have any answer to that. I just knew. Tenderly I pressed my hand to my still flat stomach and shrugged. “I don’t know for sure but I feel she is a little girl.”

“Isn’t it amazing, the kind of things we just know your highness.” The grey haired doctor said from the sofa only she didn’t really look like my dr anymore. She looked like that woman in the woods from my coma dream. “Like I know the rest of your life will be a happy one.” She smiled and her smile grew knowing. “Now aren’t you glad you took that chance in the woods that day? I was hoping it would work out this way for you.”
