“What the hell is wrong with you?” Chris asked me angrily as I neared the steps.
“You’re sixteen Chris, he had no right to push this bond on you,” I said to her my anger flaring up again.
“He didn’t,” she said to me and I looked at her neck, it was unmarked.
“Shit,” I said.
“We both realized it this morning when we bumped into each other in the hallway and he was on the verge of rejecting me. I said to him I wouldn’t reject this bond even if I always thought of him as a brother. You know very well that we can’t fight it,” she said to me.
“I thought he marked you,” I said to her.
“You’re a shithead because the mark will only appear when I’m seventeen,” she said to me.
“I know,” I said as she turned around and left the front door open behind her.
Jax wasn’t in the living room and I went up to the second floor to his bedroom and knocked on his door. I knew he was in there. I could sense and smell him. He opened the door and looked at me before turning his back on me leaving the door open.
“Can I come in?” I asked him.
“You’re going to do whatever you want to do,” he said.
“I thought you marked her,” I said to him and he shook his head at me.
“I gathered that,” he said.
“I’m sorry. I overreacted and I should’ve made sure of my facts,” I said to him.
“No shit,” he said to me.
“She’s my sister Jax, I’m always going to overreact when it comes to them. They’re my responsibility,” I said to him as I sat down on the chair facing his desk.
“She’s your sister yeah but now she’s my other half and you know exactly what I mean,” he said to me. I did know what he meant.
“So are we good?” I asked him.
“Are you going to hit me every time you see me with her?” he asked.
“It was just a shock and the way she was sitting it looked like she was covering your mark. Just promise me when you do mark her that both of you are sure that this commitment is for real,” I said to him.
“I’ve always loved her Lucas, you already knew that too, why would I ever do anything to hurt her?” he said.
“So stop moping, Chris already gave me an earful,” I said and he laughed.
Preston and Rev eyed us carefully as we walked into the living room together and I could see them both visibly relax when we both smiled at them. Chris looked at me with raised eyebrows and I saw her eyes soften when she looked at Jax.
“I was an idiot okay, I recognize your bond and I know how it works, but it doesn’t mean that he gets to sneak into your room at night and mark you before you’re ready. Think about what this means for both of you, it’s forever, it’s not like you can get a divorce. Once this bond’s accepted, it’s for life,” I said to them.
“Neither of us are going to reject the other one. Just accept it big brother and be glad that I’ll be staying in our lair,” Chris said as the front door opened.
“Hi Jesse,” I said.
“So Chris and Jax,” he said to me as he watched me.
“Yeah shit,” I said and he laughed at me.
“It’s not that funny,” I said to him.
“Your face Lucas, it’s quite funny, though we all knew it would happen,” he said.
“Doesn’t make it any easier to accept,” I said to him.
Jesse walked over to where Chris and Jax stood side by side and pulled her into a tight hug. She was right though, if it had been anyone else I probably would’ve killed the guy. Jax was my brother and I knew he loved her.
“Welcome to the Sterling family,” he said to her and she smiled at him.
“So do I call you Dad now?” she asked as I snorted.
“You just recognized the bond, nobody’s getting married!” I said irritably.
“Your car will be delivered a little bit later,” Jesse said as Jax smiled.
“Yes!” he said triumphantly.
“It’s probably a secondhand Beetle,” I said and Jesse laughed as Jax gave me a filthy look.
“You just don’t want anyone showing you up,” he said with a smirk.
“If you drink and drive with my sister, I’ll kill you,” I said to him.
“You can drink and I’ll drive,” Chris said as Jax looked at her in horror.
“I’m never drinking again,” he said as we laughed.
On Friday night we went to The Drake and we watched Rev fight. He was ruthless and he won his fight within five minutes. The man had tried to taunt him but Rev barely even glanced at him. After his fight we stood at the bar as people came up and talked to him.
“Have you thought about going into MMA?” one man asked him and placed a business card next to his glass.
“I’ll pass it on to his agent,” Preston said and took the card as Rev ignored the man.
“You’ve got real talent kid,” the man said and walked away after a few minutes as Rev still ignored him.
Preston and I burst out laughing as Jax joined us. He had been sitting with his father at another table probably kissing his ass because he got the exact same car I did, his was black and orange. Preston took the business card out and showed it to Jax.
“Impressive,” Jax said as Rev gave him a blank look.
“Let’s go get some food and head home,” I said and stood up from the barstool.
“Yes please,” Preston said and knocked his chair over.
“Rev, you’re with me,” I said as we walked out of the back door into the alley.
Ten men emerged from the shadows as we reached our cars and lunged at us. I was pushed up against the door and the man laid into me with his fists brutally. He was relentless and all I could do was block. The next moment he was pulled off of me by Rev and I wasted no time in attacking.
Rev and I stood with our backs almost touching fighting off the two men in front of us. It didn’t even occur to me to call on Baz, not that I would have, I had been warned to keep him secret for as long as possible.
The back door of the club was flung open as members of our lair piled out and joined in the fight. Rev pulled me to one side, his hands on either side of my face as he looked me over. My lip was busted open and my nose broken but other than that I was doing great.
“I’m okay,” I said to him as I saw Jesse talking to Jax. Two of the men were on their knees now and the others were on the ground unconscious.
“Who sent you?” Jesse asked the one man.
“Stay away from the girl or you’ll be sorry,” he said and spat in my direction.
“McIntyre Lair?” Jesse asked as he looked at him.
“Go fuck your mother,” he said as Jesse took the gun out from under his jacket pocket and shot him point blank in the face.
“You can take that message back to your Sire,” Jesse said and kicked the other guy hard.
“Get this cleaned up,” I said to Greg who was standing slightly behind Jesse.
“Get home, we’ll talk later,” Jesse said.
We got into our cars and Jax followed me as we drove home. Not surprisingly Rev wasn’t bleeding if you didn’t count his knuckles. I thought about Rylee but I couldn’t call her, not if I had just gotten a warning to stay away from her. I hit the steering wheel and Rev glanced at me.
“It’s about Rylee,” I said and he nodded.
“She’s my bonded half,” I said and he didn’t even look surprised.
“I know,” he said and I looked at him.
“You knew?” I asked in surprise.
“Yes,” he said.
“Why would I get a warning to stay away from her?” I asked but mostly to myself.
“Lucas, you’re chasing after her. People are noticing at school and JD’s fuming with jealousy. Nobody is mentioning a bond yet but everyone thinks you’re after Rylee to get back at the McIntyre Lair. Carson’s also telling her that you’re only interested to get back at them. She’s confused as fuck because she’s feeling the bond, not as strong as you, but her head’s telling her she’s with JD and her heart yearns for you. JD’s severely pissed off and when he realizes that she’s not bonded to him on Monday he’s going to dump her and Carson will have his turn. JD’s also pissed off because so far Rylee’s refused to sleep with him, he can’t go against Carson, and he just wants to get in her pants. You’re a good guy Lucas and you deserve someone that matches your soul,” Rev said as I stared open mouthed at him.
“Just because I never say anything doesn’t mean that I don’t listen,” he said as I focused back on the road. I still hadn’t said anything, I was too shocked to hear him say more than three words at a time.
“I don’t think I’ve ever heard you say a complete sentence,” I said to him as he laughed.
“Don’t get used to it,” he said.
“With that speech I might just love you Rev,” I said to him.
“Fuck off,” he said and I laughed as I parked the car in the garage.
Hannah opened the front door just as we reached it and flung herself into Rev’s arms hugging him tightly.
“I felt you get hurt,” she said and I frowned at her.
“The fuck…” Preston said as they stood behind us.
Rev walked inside with Hannah in his arms and sat down on the couch rubbing her back as she leaned against him. This was beyond weird and I wondered if this was something I should ask the Elders about. Many rumours had made the rounds that my mother had a sixth sense and that she sometimes knew things.
Jax fell down next to Chris and put his head on her lap and I shook my head as I looked at them. Would I ever have that with Rylee? I’ve only ever heard of one person that rejected the bond and it made him bitter and angry. We weren’t blessed with an infinite number of bond halves but I’ve heard of it happening when your other half dies.
I was afraid that Hannah had inherited our mother’s sixth sense because that could make her a target as well, and for that reason alone I wanted to keep this incident quiet. I knew nobody here would say a word but I had to wonder if Rev was her bonded half and somehow she already knew it.
“Who’s hungry?” Preston asked.
“Nobody!” Jax and Chris yelled in unison.
