Watching Hunter and Ally leave my house hurt so much that I almost couldn’t stand it. She’d been gone for two weeks and I felt that void in my house, in my heart and in my soul. Riley was sad, she missed them both.

Ryder sat across from me on the couch and I couldn’t read the expression in his eyes. “What the hell are you doing?”

“I spoke to a lawyer. If I push this I’ll have to prove paternity, get a court order to have my name put on his birth certificate, then I’ll have more rights to him. Joel says she was being generous with the school holidays.”

“You’re going to go the legal route?”

“What else am I supposed to do? I have a right to have him in my life, in my house!”

“You are stupider than I thought. She loves you, Wynter, and all you had to do was love her back!” Ryder’s voice was angry but it didn’t match the anger that I felt.

“She’s marrying someone else! She doesn’t love me, Dad, maybe she did a long time ago because if she did she wouldn’t have left me!”

“She left because you kept stringing her along. I know everything that happened, she told me and you broke her heart! One damn misunderstanding almost five years ago and you can’t let it go. She rejected you for the plan Wynter! She knew if she told you about Hunter that you wouldn’t go through with marrying Maya. She didn’t want to derail your destiny, that’s how much she loved you! She loved you so much that she never even looked at another man, even when she thought you were dead! Maybe she is better off without you because you sure as hell don’t deserve her.”

Ryder left me sitting there and I was shocked to the core. She had never told me her reasons for that rejection because I didn’t want to hear them. Knowing the truth now changed a lot of things for me and it threatened to choke the fragile hold I had over my own emotions.

All my life I’d prided myself on being level-headed. I knew what I wanted and I went out and got it. I always had a plan but this time I didn’t. I had no plan and I had no idea how to fix the colossal mess I found myself in.

Two weeks later I stood outside the beautiful old villa, pacing up and down nervously. My palms were sweaty and my heart was beating faster than normal. It was now or never and I wasn’t sure that I could live with never.

I opened the door of the villa and walked into the foyer. It was beautifully decorated and people scurried around me as they put the final touches on their decorations, setting tables and polishing wine glasses.

I stopped in the middle of the large open plan area as Ally walked into the room wearing her silvery white wedding dress with a bouquet of flowers in her hand. She looked up and faltered in her step as she saw me.

“Wynter … what are you doing here?” Her eyes darted around and I knew exactly what she was thinking.

“Don’t run, Ally.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Don’t run away from me.”

“Wynter, I have to go. I’m getting married today.”

I gave her a sad smile. “Do you love him?”

“Maybe in time I will.”

“That’s not good enough, not for you. You should marry someone you love like crazy, someone that drives you crazy and someone that will catch you when you fall even when you hate that you love him.”

“Wynter …”

“I love you, Ally. I’ve always loved you.”

“You treated me like shit.”

“I did.”

“You blamed me for things I couldn’t control.”

“I did.”

“You’re still an asshole, Wynter.”

“I know but I still love you.”

“Why are you here?”

“Because even though I broke your heart and even if you hate me you still love me too. I’ll never give up on you, Ally, because you will always be my first love and you are my last love.”

I took a step closer to her and she stood her ground, watching me with her bright blue eyes. I took her hand and she swallowed nervously. “I don’t know if I …”

“Run with me, Ally. Trust me one more time to do this right.”

She laughed as tears gathered in her eyes and nodded her head. I took her hand and together we ran outside to the rental car waiting in the street. The chapel at the end of the block were filled with her wedding guests.

The groom stood in front of the altar, waiting patiently for his bride to arrive. Ryder and Nova sat in the front pew with Hunter and Riley. She wore a beautiful little flower dress and had strewn rose petals on the floor as she walked towards her seat, tired of waiting for Ally to show up.

Abby and Milo sat on the other side with Luke. Nova smiled secretly as the music started and looked at Ryder with a twinkle in her eye. Ryder narrowed his eyes and Nova leaned in closer to him, to whisper in his ear.

“Ally’s not coming.”

“What do you mean she’s not coming?”

“She’s eloping with Wynter as we speak.”
