12

I sat in the dining room but I couldn’t eat, I was nervous. It was Monday and Rylee’s birthday, she would know I was her bonded half the moment she saw me. I had no idea when JD’s birthday was because he would’ve known already if he had turned seventeen.
“Have a good day at school,” Martha yelled as we headed to the front door.
“Thanks!” Preston yelled back and slammed the door shut.
I drove to school alone and much slower than normal. I parked in my usual spot and sat staring out in front of me until I heard the bell ring. Great, now I was late for class. I walked to my locker getting my books and headed to our homeroom.
“You’re late Mr. Grey,” Ms. Lucy said as I opened the door.
My eyes found Rylee and she gasped audibly. My eyes flickered between green and yellow as I took her scent in, it was much stronger now that she was seventeen and she looked at me with disbelief all over her face. JD was watching both of us and I saw the exact moment he realized what had happened.
“Sorry,” I muttered and sat down at my desk at the back of the class.
I was staring at the back of Rylee’s head and I knew she could feel it. By lunchtime every dragonkin student in this school would know that Rylee and I were bonded halves. JD pulled Rylee up by her arm and dragged her out of the classroom as soon as the bell rang.
The door to the science lab opened and Rylee pulled me inside as I walked past it. I leaned against the closed door as she paced up and down in front of me. I sensed her nervousness and she seemed to be having some sort of conversation with herself.
“Of course I’m bonded to you!” she said finally.
“I tried to tell you,” I said as I lowered my backpack to the floor.
“This is just great,” she said and sighed.
“It could’ve been worse,” I said and she laughed suddenly.
“How could it have been any worse?” she asked me.
“You could’ve been bonded to JD,” I said to her.
“He’s not the bad guy you think he is,” she said to me.
“I know exactly who he is,” I said.
“He told me to reject you,” she said.
“You can’t reject me,” I said to her.
“I can’t believe this is happening,” she said and sat down on one of the chairs standing at the table.
“You know how this works Rylee, it means we’re best suited together, might as well just accept it,” I said.
I took a step closer to her and I grabbed her face in my hands as she turned to look at me and kissed her. She kissed me back and both of her hands were under my t-shirt as she pulled me closer. I heard Carson’s voice in the hallway and she suddenly pushed me away from her.
“I should really just reject you,” she said to me.
“I reject your rejection,” I said to her as I picked my backpack up from the floor.
“Why?” she asked me.
“Because I believe bonded halves happen for a reason and I’m not rejecting it,” I said to her and opened the door. I closed it behind me quietly and walked to where Rev was waiting for me outside our next class.
“Reject her Lucas,” JD said as he blocked my way in the hallway just before I reached the classroom.
“Piss off JD,” I said to him and pushed him out of my way with my shoulder.
“She’s going to reject you!” JD yelled from behind.
“She already did,” I said loudly and kept walking.
I didn’t eat lunch in the cafeteria, I went home instead and locked myself in my office. I read through congratulatory e-mails from other Sires on getting my beast and I sent quick replies thanking them. I checked bank statements that Jesse sent and tried to drown myself in work.
I heard Preston first as they all arrived home from school and I closed my laptop and joined them downstairs. They were all in the living room and I stood in the doorway as I listened to them joke. Hannah sat on the floor in front of Rev with her homework books spread out on the coffee table as Rev paged through one of her handbooks.
Preston selected a movie and I fell asleep halfway through but Hannah’s giggles woke me up in time to see ‘The End.’ Chris nudged my leg until I looked at her and realized that it was already dusk.
“So today was interesting,” Chris said as she looked at me.
“Just say what you want to say,” I said to her as I sat down on the recliner.
“How long have you known?” she asked me.
“Since last weekend,” I said.
“You freaking hypocrite!” she said with a smile.
“I already apologized for that,” I said as she threw a pillow at me.
“Are the rumours true? Is Rylee going to reject you?” she asked me.
“We talked about it,” I said.
“And?” she asked.
“She mentioned it and I rejected her rejection,” I said.
“That makes no sense then,” she said and scrunched up her nose.
“What makes no sense?” Jax asked her.
“How she’s marked then,” Chris said.
“She’s what?” I asked.
“She’s marked. I saw it with my own eyes, it was faint, but the dragon outline was there in her neck,” she said.
“The bond is strong,” Baz said in my head.
“What are you talking about?” I asked him.
“She bears our mark,” he said smugly.
“We didn’t do that,” I said rolling my eyes mentally.
“Yes you did, the first time you slept with her,” Baz said and my eyes widened.
“Oh fuck,” I said.
“Geez Lucas I know you have a reputation but damn you move fast,” Preston said to me.
“When the hell did you complete the bond? Did you do it at school?” Jax asked me.
“No, it happened a year ago,” I said as I closed my eyes.
“Does she know?” Chris asked me.
“I doubt it, I didn’t even know until Baz said it’s our mark,” I said as I leaned forward resting my head in my hands.
“You do realize that it’s just going to become more prominent, people are going to notice and think she’s lying when she doesn’t know who’s mark it is, you have to call her and warn her,” Jax said and I took my phone from my jacket pocket as it rang.
“I was just about to call you,” I said to her.
“I’m sorry I didn’t know who else to call,” Rylee said through her tears.
“What happened, are you okay?” I asked her.
“I don’t know,” she said.
“Send me your location I’ll come get you,” I said to her.
She was quiet for a while but I could hear her crying softly and then the phone call ended. I waited and just as I was about to call her back her location appeared in my messages.
“Let’s go,” Rev said as he stood with my car keys already in his hand and the front door wide open.
“She’s on that service road that borders Oakhurst Forest,” I said to him as he pulled out of the driveway and raced down the street.
It took Rev forty minutes to reach the service road as I held on to the dashboard with one hand as he drove like a madman. He slowed down on the dirt road and I looked around as we neared the little dot of her location.
“Rylee!” I yelled as we climbed out of the car and looked around.
“You go that way, I’ll look this side,” Rev said as he sprinted away from me.
“She’s close,” Baz said as I turned towards the grove of trees behind me.
“Find her,” I said to him and I could feel him shift.
“Her scent is faint but still here, I’d say she’s a few feet inside those trees,” he said to me.
I ran forward and almost tripped over her where she lay curled up into herself on the ground. Her clothes were torn and I knelt down to pick her up. Her body was limp but she was still breathing. I smelled blood on her and I moved through the trees back towards the car.
“Rev! I found her!” I yelled and he came running from the trees a few yards away.
“Shit,” he said as he reached me and pulled the door open.
I climbed into the passenger side with her and Rev wasted no time as he spun away on the dirt road pulling out his phone as he drove.
“Jesse get Stella at the house now,” Rev said and dropped his phone back on his lap as he sped through red lights with the hazards on. It took him only thirty minutes to get back to the house and I saw two familiar cars in the driveway.
Jesse stood on the steps with Preston and Jax and they came running to the car as the brakes screeched across the driveway as Rev parked. My door was pulled open but I held onto Rylee as I climbed out and walked into the house.
“Sire,” Stella said as she stood with her medical bag in the foyer.
“Upstairs,” I said and Stella followed me to my room where I put Rylee down on my bed.
“Can you all wait outside while I examine her,” Stella said and I only then realized that everyone had followed me to my room.
Rev picked Hannah up and we all filed out of my room and into the hallway. He went downstairs with her and I knew he would put her to bed while we waited.
“Chris,” Stella said as she poked her head into the hallway, “please come help me.”
Chris entered my room and closed the door behind her and I folded my arms as I waited. After twenty minutes Rev joined us and nodded telling me that Hannah was asleep in her room.
“What the hell happened?” Jesse asked me.
“She was unconscious when I found her but she phoned me and sent me her location. I smelled blood on her and her clothes were torn. I think she was attacked,” I said and clenched my fists.
