Megan pulled me away and led me to a bathroom where she wiped the blood from my face and washed the blood from my hands. She hadn’t said a word and I stood there as she rinsed the blood under the tap from both my knives.

“I’ve never seen someone kill a vampire before,” she said softly.

“I’ve killed my fair share,” I said to her.

“When you were in the unit?” she asked me.

“Yes, you kill plenty of everything,” I said as she closed the faucet and dried her hands on a paper towel.

“I think we both need a stiff drink,” she said as she took my hand and led me back to the ballroom and straight to the bar.

Plenty of Sires wanted to talk to me and Lucas had given them one look before they all left grumbling with my business card in hand. Megan had ordered a bottle of scotch and we both downed our first three drinks.

“You’re going to be overrun by Sires wanting to form an alliance with you now,” Lucas said to me as we sat at the bar. Rylee had taken Megan back to our table and she had left reluctantly.

“I wasn’t about to get my ass kicked by a vampire,” I said to him.

“You know I never actually believed Wentworth when he said you could catch a vampire running at full speed,” Lucas said as he looked at me.

“I know you didn’t,” I said to him and he smiled.

“What did Clarence want with you anyway? What retribution?” he asked me.

“You know him?” I asked.

“He has a coven in Aledo,” Lucas said.

“I killed his underling a few days ago and Megan helped me to dispose of his body. He told me his master would arrive soon to choose a new girl. I sent his picture to Timothy to identify,” I said to him.

“I think it’s time the team got together again,” Lucas said and stood up. He motioned to Jasper and Brandon and they headed over to us.

“We should call Wentworth, he has teams that specializes in rescues,” I said to him.

“Please, who do you think started the original Hunter Team?” he asked me.

“Who’s asses are we kicking?” Brandon asked.

“Clarence was responsible for three abductions in Princeton, young girls,” Lucas said.

“So we’re heading to Aledo?” Jasper asked him.

“We’ll all meet at Ryder’s house in three hours,” Lucas said as he walked back to the table and started whispering something in Rylee’s ear. Megan looked over at me as I sent a text to Link to get his ass home.

“Take Megan home, I’ll bring your mother and Melissa and five warriors to guard them there, be ready to leave in three hours,” Lucas said.

He spoke to Jasper and Brandon and they nodded and left soon after that. The gala was still in full swing and I saw the Elders frown at us as we hastily made our exits. I was holding Megan’s hand again as we exited the elevator and walked to my truck.

“What’s going on?” Megan asked me as I drove out of the parking lot and got onto the highway.

“My father knew that vampire, he has his coven in Aledo, that vampire I killed was his underling,” I said to her.

“So you think the missing girls might be there in Aledo?” she asked me.

“We’ll know soon enough,” I said to her.

“Just be careful please,” she said.

“Will you miss me if I die?” I asked her.

“Don’t be an idiot, if you die I have to move,” she said and I laughed.

“I’m not worried,” I said to her.

“Aren’t you ever afraid of pulling these stunts?” she asked.

“No, the unit trains that fear right out of you,” I said to her.

“Why don’t you ever talk about your time in the unit?” she asked me.

“It’s not stuff I want to remember. The training was gruesome and horrifying and then they send you out and you do things, things you would never normally do,” I said.

“Why didn’t you just leave?” she asked.

“It became a way of life, it’s so engrained into you, find the bad guys, kill them and move on to the next one,” I said to her.

“Does it haunt you?” she asked me.

“Sometimes, I lost my best friend on our last assignment. That shit haunts me,” I said honestly.

“Will you tell me about him?” she asked me gently as she moved closer to me.

“Felix was great. We met on our first day and we were in the same training unit, shared a room, shared our meals and we became friends really quickly. We worked together on the same mission for nine months straight. We got the same tattoos and we did everything together. Felix was actually the one that taught me how to kill vampires,” I said to her.

“Was Felix a vampire?” she asked me.

“Yes, he liked to say his kind was a pain in the neck, he always made stupid jokes like that,” I said as she laughed.

“I’m sorry you lost him,” she said as we pulled up to the house.

“Me too,” I said as we climbed out of the truck and headed inside.

“Are you okay?” she asked me.

“I’ll be okay,” I said to her and suddenly she hugged me tightly. My arms wrapped around her and I lowered my head until it rested against hers. She turned her head to look at me and I saw so many emotions go through them that I wasn’t thinking when I kissed her.

She hesitated for a few moments before she kissed me back. My mind went blank and the only thing I could think about was her kissing me and everything else I wanted to do to her. We broke apart as we heard the front door open. She looked at me with her eyes widened in shock and then she ran up the stairs.

“Ryder?” Link called out.

“In here,” I said as I listened to her bedroom door closing.

“What’s happening? I came back as soon as I could,” he said.

“We have a lead on those missing girls, grab some weapons, some vampire potion and get ready, my father and his team will be here in an hour,” I said to him as I headed upstairs too.

In my room I could still feel the tingling sensation on my lips as I took the suit off and got dressed in my black combat gear. I strapped my weapons on and double checked everything. On a whim I decided to take the bow and arrow and I sat at the table with the windows open and laced the arrows with Angel’s Trumpet.

I stopped in front of Megan’s door with my hand raised but decided against knocking. I went downstairs as I heard voices and found that everyone had arrived.

“Are you going to war brother?” Chase asked me as he looked at the array of weapons strapped to my body.

“How many vampires have you killed?” I asked him.

“Yeah okay fair point,” he said as I opened the box I carried down with me.

“What’s that?” Jasper asked as he looked into the box.

“Angel bombs,” I said and smiled.

“What the hell are angel bombs?” Brandon asked and Lucas smiled as he looked at me.

“They’re filled with Angel’s Trumpet oil, when you’re cornered or in a snag you throw this at your vampire attacker, immobilizes them for a bit,” I said.

“Shit you really did turn into a bad ass at that unit,” Chase remarked.

“Please be safe you guys,” Rylee said where she stood next to Lucas.

“We’ll be fine, we have Ryder with us,” Brandon said and I laughed slightly as I shook my head.

“Megan’s up in her room, make yourself at home,” I said.

It was the first time that any of them except Lucas had set foot into my house. I felt nervous, the good kind of nervous, the kind of tingling feeling you get when you know you’re going to go kill some bad people. It was an addictive feeling and one I had developed inside the unit, especially those nine months Felix and I had spent hunting the supernatural.

“Don’t worry about us, we’ll be fine,” Rylee said.

Chase had disappeared into the living room with Melissa and I knew he was busy cleaning her tonsils before we left. I left them to go upstairs again and this time I did knock on Megan’s door. She opened the door wearing sweatpants and a t-shirt.

“We’re about ready to leave, my mom and Melissa’s downstairs,” I said to her. She looked like herself again but that still didn’t change what had happened and the part that confused me the most was how she had made my body react. I had never before been aroused by a single kiss.

“Be safe okay,” she said not looking at me.

“Do you want to talk about what happened?” I asked her.

“No!” she said quickly and her face was bright red once again.

“Do you regret it?” I asked her suddenly.

“I don’t know, it just…” her voice faltered.

“If you don’t want to talk about it, then we won’t, but if you change your mind then I’ll listen to what you have to say. The thing is, I don’t want things to be awkward between us or for things to change. I like how we are, who we are with each other,” I said to her.

“I don’t want things to be awkward either,” she said and looked at me for the first time since we kissed.

“Okay, let me go kick some vampire ass, you don’t have to go downstairs if you don’t feel up to it,” I said to her.

I stepped closer to her and then I kissed her on top of her hair and walked away quickly. I had no idea why I just did that, she was already freaked out and I was picturing her naked. That was not a good start to this thing. I needed to be focused on what lay ahead, if anything did.

“Ready to go?" I asked as I opened the front door and walked outside. Abeloth separated from me the moment he had space and he stretched and flapped his wings.

“Ryder you can release your dragon later,” Jasper said to me as he eyed Abeloth.

“I always fly in to a kill location,” I said going into hunter mode.

“Shit, you really are every bit hunter,” Chase said as I climbed onto Abeloth’s back.
