“Wow …” was all I could get out when Nova opened her front door.

It was the first time I’d seen her with make-up on, she had left her hair loose in soft curls and the make-up only accentuated her true beauty. She opened her coat and the dress fit her perfectly. I had to fight Abeloth for control because if my eyes turned yellow, she’d run.

“I guess I look okay then,” she said with a smile.

“More than okay, you look beautiful,” I said.

She smiled awkwardly at me when I opened the car door for her and she fidgeted with her hands as I drove away from her house. My heart was beating faster and faster and I’d never felt as nervous before as I was in that moment.

“Where are we going?” she asked me.

“It’s a surprise,” I said and opened the middle console. “Put this on.” I handed her the mask and she looked at me with a frown.

“I’m not sure if I trust you this much,” she said.

“Of course you do, just put it on,” I said and laughed at the look on her face.

I drove in circles for about ten minutes before heading back to the farm. The radio was on and I glanced over at her every few minutes. I had mourned Megan for five years, I would always mourn her and I would always love her, she was my first true love and I’d never forget her, but I also knew that I had to live life to the fullest, create a normal home environment for my children, they deserved to live their lives that way too.

“Take my hand, I’ll guide you,” I said to Nova when I opened her door.

Nova placed her hand in mine and I swore I felt something go through me at our touch. I led her away from the car and down to the dock. When we reached the grass I picked her up and she gasped lightly as I did so. I put her down on the wooden flooring of the transformed dock.

“Can I take the mask off now?” she asked me.

“Sure,” I said and left her standing in the middle.

It was pitch dark around us as I moved towards the switch. Nova took the mask off and she chuckled slightly because she couldn’t see anything. “Ready?”

“I don’t know, should I be worried here?” she asked.

I switched the lights on and I watched her face transform from nervous to stunned as she looked around her and saw what I’d done. “Ryder … this is …”

“Do you like it?”

“Like it? I love it, it’s beautiful,” she said.

“Sit down, make yourself comfortable,” I said as I uncorked the bottle of wine and joined her at the table.

“I don’t really know what to say,” she said as I handed her the glass of wine.

“You don’t have to say anything, just relax and enjoy yourself,” I said.

“Thank you Ryder, nobody’s ever done something like this for me,” she said and looked down.

We talked about everyday life and drank wine and ate the food. We laughed and joked and drank some more wine. We talked about our kids, what we wanted out of life and she looked into my eyes as I fell even harder for her.

“Do you want to dance?” I said when her eyes softened when the next song came on.

“Sure,” she said and we stood up.

We swayed to the music and she averted her gaze when she found me looking at her. She fidgeted with her hair and on the inside the nerves flared up again. “What’s wrong Nova?”

“What are we doing Ryder?” she asked me.

“I like you Nova, I more than like you. These past six months, getting to know you, I like everything about you,” I said.

“I’m out of my depth here, I’m not used to all this. You’re a good man Ryder but we come from completely different worlds,” she said.

“I know this is new for both of us, I never thought I’d feel this way again but I do and I know you do too and I want to see where this goes,” I said.

“There’s so much about me that you don’t know,” she whispered.

“Isn’t that the whole point of this? There are things about me that you don’t know either,” I said.

“I’m pretty sure when I tell you my secret you’ll run for the hills and think I’m crazy,” she said.

“I’d never think that. I think we’ve got something special here Nova and I want you in my life, by my side, I want to explore this with you,” I said softly.

Our mouths were inches apart and I could feel her breath on me. She leaned forward ever so slightly and my hands were on the sides of her face as I closed the distance between us and kissed her. It felt so right that I didn’t want to stop.

Her hands were on my chest and then she gripped my jacket in her hands. I let my hands slide down her back and then I picked her up. I lowered her down onto the cushions as she started to unbutton my shirt. I took my jacket off as we broke off the kiss and I looked into her eyes.

My hand found the zipper of her dress and I slowly pulled it down. I helped her to take my shirt off and slid the straps of her dress down her arms. Time had ceased to exist as I unbuttoned my pants and took them off.

We moved together in perfect sync and the feelings flooding me was overwhelming but I savoured it, took it all in as I felt her getting closer to her climax. When I reached mine, it felt freeing, like I could breathe again.

“I love you Nova,” I said as she lay on top of me and we looked each other in the eye.

“I love you Ryder Grey,” she said and her eyes flashed silver. She quickly closed them and didn’t see my own eyes flash yellow as Abeloth surfaced.

“Nova, what are you?” I asked her as I tilted her head upwards towards mine. “I’m different too, you can tell me anything and everything, I’ll always believe you.”

“Your eyes,” she said breathlessly as Abeloth pushed forward again. I could feel him reach out to something and then pull back.

“I’m dragonkin Nova, Abeloth is my dragon,” I said.

“Dragonkin …”

“I wasn’t lying when I said I love you Nova, I’m not going anywhere and I’m not going to let you run away from me either,” I said and tightened my grip around her.

“I’m fae,” she said.

“See, we’re both different,” I said and smiled as she looked at me.

“I could feel something different about you, about Wynter, Simon and Mary-Joe, Milo is different but not the same different and I couldn’t feel that with Abigail,” she said.

“Simon and Mary-Joe’s dragonkin like I am and Wynter’s already merged with his dragon. Milo’s a vampire,” I said.

“And Abigail?”

“We’ll have to wait and see, Megan had a dragon too so chances are good that Abby will merge with one as well,” I said.

“I guess we have different truths to tell each other now,” she said with a smile.

“Is Alexis half human or full fae?” I asked her.

“She’s full fae and her fae side is already emerging,” she said.

“Her father?” I asked.

“He’s fae too, the Fae King’s cousin. We don’t have bonded halves like you do but we can only bond with someone who’s love is pure, it happens automatically, it’s not something we can control but true love has to be there from both sides for it to happen. I thought he loved me but I was just a distraction. He got married to a noble’s daughter two weeks later and he told me to get rid of Alexis. Of course I didn’t, but I left and never looked back,” I said.

“He doesn’t know about her existence though,” I said.

“No, I never contacted him again and he has other children now so I doubt that he’d want her,” she said.

“I’m sorry,” I said.

“Don’t be, everything happens as it should but now I have to ask why you’re not a Sire, now that I’ve felt Abeloth, I can sense his power,” she said.

“I was a Sire before I was exiled and then shit happened, Megan died, all my friends died after the King attacked us and my friend, Marlo, did a complicated spell that erased my past, made people forget who I really am because my children deserve to live in peace without fear,” I said.

“Life isn’t always fair,” she said.

“I did it without blinking Nova, I lost almost everyone I cared about that day but I made a promise to myself, to those kids, and if I hadn’t we’d all be dead, because Wynter merged when he was five and one day Echo will be stronger than Abeloth,” I said.

“They wanted Wynter?” she asked me.

“Wynter and Megan, she was the first woman to merge with a dragon, and she died fighting for her freedom.”

“I’m sorry you lost so much,” she said.

“I’m not sorry I found you and you should know that I don’t plan on letting go,” I said.

“I never thought I’d be naked on top of you that first day we met,” she said with a smile.

“I’m glad we did this Nova,” I said.

“Me too,” she said and I knew she meant it.

I kissed her again and rolled us over so I hovered on top of her. This time I took her slowly and gently and we both reveled in our union as our eyes changed colour and I felt a sort of merging take place. I could feel part of her soul inside of mine.

Later, after we got dressed, I took her gift from my jacket pocket and I took her hand in mine as she smiled at me. “I bought this for you before I knew the whole truth and now I want you to have it more than ever,” I said.

“What is it?” she asked me.

“Open it,” I said and handed her the small box.

“Is this …” Her voice faltered as she looked at the ring.

“Marry me Nova, make us a family, all of us,” I said.

“Yes.”

“Yes?” I asked her with a smile.

“Yes,” she laughed as I picked her up and kissed her again.
