After another eight days we had two names left on our list. Two people that nobody knew where they were. I got Tank on missing persons reports, prison systems and people that had changed their names. Nothing came up and then Tank came up with a brilliant idea.

Between him and Timothy they wrote a hacking program and with that they scoured every camera owned by the government, traffic cameras and facial recognition software. It took another thirteen days before we had a lead on one of the names.

Her name was Chelsea Connors, dragonkin daughter to a warrior, she had a troubled past and nobody really worried when she skipped town. They all thought that she had ran away so Felix and I packed a go bag and started making plans.

Tank had found her in Columbia Falls, Montana. A traffic camera had picked her up speeding just outside of the town borders. He had then hacked the sheriff’s department and her drivers license identified her as Maggie O’Neal.

“Grey.” I answered my ringing phone.

“Sire Ryder, it’s Elder Michael,” he said.

“What’s up Elder?” I asked and he chuckled.

“Always so informal, we need to discuss the claiming ceremony,” he said.

“The what?” I asked him.

“You need to have a formal claiming ceremony when your first born is a daughter,” he explained.

“Oh, yeah, about that … I won’t be claiming her as my heir,” I said.

“Excuse me?”

“You heard me Elder Michael, you might be an Elder but you’re far from deaf,” I said.

“I will make a note then, that you still don’t have an heir,” he said.

“Is this going to be a problem?” I asked him.

“Not at all Sire, it’s just uncommon for a Sire to have a child and not claim it as his heir,” he said.

“Well I guess I’m uncommon like that,” I said and laughed.

“We will speak again, I’m sure,” he said.

“Take care Elder,” I said and ended the call.

I put my phone in my pocket and zipped the bag closed. I had taken only one gun and two knives, just for in case. I had no idea if Chelsea was being monitored by whoever was in charge of the bunker where Felix had been kept or if she had just left home.

“Ready?” Felix asked me.

“As ready as I’ll ever be,” I said to him.

“What did Ava say?” Felix asked me.

“She gets why we have to go, she said to be careful and to hurry back,” I relayed her words to Felix.

“She’s nice,” he said softly.

“Shit Felix, did you lose your balls in that bunker?” I asked him.

“Piss off wanker,” he retorted.

Right after we had gotten a location for Chelsea I had gone upstairs to talk to Ava. Things weren’t perfect between us because I had used the excuse of hurting the baby to not have sex with her but we spent time together and we got along.

She had been more understanding than I had thought she’d be and because of that I promised myself to try harder with her. She wouldn’t be happy when she found out that our daughter wouldn’t inherit the lair from me or that she’d never be its Drakaina.

Those were things I’d have to worry about later because we had a thirty hour drive ahead of us. Felix would drive the majority of the time since he didn’t need as much sleep as I did and also because that’s just how it was with us. Even in the unit, he always drove and Abeloth always kept a watchful eye. He was fast yes, but I was stronger than him and the better fighter.

“Are you aware of the many rumours that follow you?” Felix asked me as we drove down the highway towards Montana.

“Like what?”

“That you’re basically known as the vampire hunter,” he said with a grin.

“Shit Felix, that was because Clarence barged in on my Sire ceremony and I killed him right there, in front of the Elders and a shit load of Sires,” I said and he laughed.

“Let me guess you probably made a whole show out of it,” he said and I laughed.

“You didn’t teach me to kill vampires for nothing,” I said.

“I also didn’t teach you to kill them to make a name for yourself,” he said.

“Okay listen, when I took over as Sire in Princeton, these two vamps were inside my house, they told me it was almost time for their master to choose a new girl, I killed one and told the other one to tell his master to go fuck himself. Linda’s daughter was one of the girls he’d taken the year before. Clarence came for his retribution and that’s how we got those girls back,” I said.

“Damn, I really missed out on a lot,” he said.

“You’ll make up for it,” I said and he laughed.

“I can’t bloody well wait,” he said.

We drove, stopped for gas, got food and water and drove some more. It was thirty-two hours later that we finally arrived in Columbia Falls. Chelsea was working at the RV Park and we stopped there and walked into the reception office.

“Hi there, how can I help you?” Chelsea asked us and I looked at her nametag that read Maggie.

“One cabin please,” Felix asked as he gave her his best smile.

She booked us in and five minutes later we had a key and were heading to our cabin. We each had a duffel bag and we were both in dire need of a shower. Felix showered first as I lay on the bed and stretched my arms over my head.

“Made it nice and steamy for you in there,” Felix said when he opened the bathroom door and steam billowed out behind him.

“As long as that’s the only thing you did in there,” I said and he grinned.

“You’ve seen me naked mate, count yourself lucky,” he said as I closed the bathroom door.

After showering I drew the curtains closed and passed out on the bed. I had no idea where Felix was but I wasn’t worried. He woke me up at six pm, just as the sun set and handed me a cup of coffee. I pulled a t-shirt on and looked at the big smile on his face.

“What are you so happy about?” I asked him.

“Well Chelsea or rather Maggie invited us for a drink after her shift. We’re meeting her at some bar in town at eight,” he said.

“How the hell did you manage that one?” I asked him.

“I, brother, have charm whereas you’re just a pretty face,” he said.

“If you call me pretty one more time, I’m going to beat the shit out of you,” I threatened him.

“Put some pants on when you threaten me, it’s more manly that way,” he said and laughed as I glared at him.

“Asshole,” I said but grabbed my jeans and pulled them on.

We headed to a restaurant in town and ate like men that had been on a hunger strike. We ate more than the average human male and with our accelerated metabolisms we also ate more than the average supernatural being, me with my Sire blood and Felix with his Master blood.

“Time to get your freak on,” Felix said.

“Where did you even hear that? Nobody talks like that,” I said to him.

“Some kids skateboarding,” he said.

“Don’t ever say that again, please,” I said.

“Fine, let’s go drink,” he said.

“Keep your eyes and ears open brother, we don’t know why she’s here or if she even left voluntarily,” I said.

“Let me do the talking,” Felix said and I smacked him behind his head as we walked into the bar.

I headed straight for the bar and ordered two scotches as Felix stood by the entrance and surveyed the occupants. His smile told me that he’d spotted Maggie and I met him halfway with our drinks as he made his way over to her table.

“Hey guys,” she said with a smile.

“See, I always keep my promises,” Felix said.

“This is my friend Chloe,” Maggie said.

“And this is my brother Ryder,” Felix said.

“Hey,” I said and sat down.

“Are you two really brothers?” Maggie asked.

“Of course,” I said.

“We’re twins actually,” Felix said and they both stared at us.

“But you have an accent,” Chloe pointed out.

“Well you see I take after our British father and Ryder takes after our American mother,” he said with such a serious expression on his face that I had to hide my laugh.

“Oh,” Chloe said and then I burst out laughing. “That’s so cool!”

I was laughing hard and Felix just stared at her. Maggie had tears in her eyes and I couldn’t believe that somebody could be so dumb. It was another four hours before Felix put a passed out Chloe in the back of Maggie’s car and closed the door.

The parking lot was empty beside us and I walked towards Maggie as the expression on her face changed. “I’m not going to hurt you, but I do need to ask you a few questions.” My eyes changed colour as Abeloth pushed forward and Maggie screamed.

“She doesn’t know,” Abeloth said retreating back.

“Fuck,” Felix muttered under his breath.

“Please don’t hurt me,” Maggie whimpered.

“Maggie, what are you talking about?” I asked her.

“Your eyes …”

“What about my eyes? How drunk are you Maggie?” I asked her with a frown.

“I don’t know, I thought I saw … they were … I don’t feel so good,” she said and turned sideways as she vomited.
