I hadn’t made it further than the living room couch not wanting to see Rylee so I slept downstairs and regretted it in the morning. Baz still had me on ignore and I saw Rev on the other couch still asleep. I remembered then that Hannah had gone to visit her friend and he had probably gone out drinking.
“Wake up,” I said as I kicked his leg and he sat up straight.
“What time is it?” he asked me.
“Nine am already,” I said to him. I couldn’t believe that we had slept that long or that Martha never woke us for breakfast.
“Shit,” he muttered and stood up.
“I’m going to go shower,” I said and headed up to my room.
Rylee wasn’t there and I was thankful as I showered and dressed. I found Rev in the hallway and we made our way downstairs to the dining room and sat down as Martha looked sternly at us. Preston joined us after ten minutes still yawning.
“Nice night out?” I asked and he grimaced.
“My head’s still pounding,” he said.
“You drink like a girl,” Rev said and I laughed.
“I’m not keeping breakfast warm for you lot again,” Martha said.
“Sorry Martha,” I said as she gave us more stern looks.
“Seems nobody eats in this house anymore,” she said.
“What do you mean? Didn’t Rylee eat breakfast?” I asked her.
“No, she also didn’t come down for dinner last night,” she said.
“Did you see her at all this morning?” I asked her.
“No dearie, I haven’t, I’ve been up since five am,” she said.
I pushed my chair out and went to the third floor and checked the guest room where she usually slept when things between us weren’t smooth sailing. The bed was made and her scent wasn’t in the room. I went back up to our room and her scent was very faint. I hadn’t paid attention earlier but I did now.
I walked into the bathroom and opened the cabinets. Most of her toiletries were gone and then I noticed that her stuff wasn’t in the shower. How hadn’t I noticed it earlier? I walked into the dressing room and stood in front of her side of the closet.
Her clothes were still there but when I looked carefully I could see the gaps of where she had taken some of her clothes, she had tried to arrange the rest of her clothes so I wouldn’t notice the gaps at first. I swore under my breath as I walked back into the room.
This time I had really pushed her too far, she had left me and I didn’t even know when. I walked to my office and I saw the envelope on my desk. I looked at my name written on the front and I sat down looking at it. I ripped the envelope open and took the letter out, I turned the envelope upside down and her wedding ring fell onto my desk.
“Lucas,
I’ve decided to finally honor your wishes and this will be the last time you ever hear from me. I know this bond can’t be broken but in my heart I reject you as my husband and Sire. We’ve both made mistakes but I don’t deserve this treatment and I’m not going to be your punching bag anymore.
I’ve made alternate arrangements to give birth to your children because no matter what you believe, I know that I didn’t sleep with that man. I remember that night and I’ve known the truth for a while now but I left it because you stopped being an asshole to me so I let it go because I believed that we loved each other.
You are free to pursue whoever you want to and take a chosen mate to live with as I will do the same after my children are born. I don’t want anything from you, my phone and bank card are in the bedside drawer. Nobody’s ever hurt me as much as you have and this pregnancy was just the last straw on a lengthy list of you treating me like shit.
I don’t care about your Elder orders and I reject the marriage vows I made. I’m aware the bond will never break and that’s why I’ve made arrangements so that I never have to see you again. I’m sure you’re feeling relieved as you read this because now you can finally go on with your life and be free from me.
I’ve consented to a non-invasive prenatal paternity test. Stella’s already drawn my blood and she’ll only need a sample from you. She’ll send it to a lab where they can match it to the babies’ DNA. You made it very clear to me that you don’t have any interest in them or me, time and time again. I just never listened to you before.
I want a legal divorce so that my children can bear my surname. Once I’ve settled down I’ll contact a lawyer so we can divorce amicably and don’t stress I don’t want your money. I can take care of my children myself.
Good luck,
Rylee.”
This was now the second time that Rylee had left me and I wasn’t even mad at her. I hadn’t been mad the first time either but I had felt that piercing pain as I read her rejection words. Why was she so adamant that the children was mine? Twins were an impossibility for us, there were no record of twins ever being born to a Sire.
“Come in,” I said at the knock on my door.
“Morning,” Stella said as she placed a small tray on my desk.
“Morning,” I said and looked at her.
“Rylee said you wanted to do a paternity test as soon as possible,” she said.
“You know as well as I do that I’m not the father,” I said to her.
“Still this is Rylee’s wish and she’s asked that I email the results to her,” she said.
I rolled up my sleeve and Stella got to work drawing my blood. I sat and watched her but I wasn’t worried. I already knew what the results would say. Stella finished up and left my office quietly as I opened my laptop.
I logged into my bank account and checked Rylee’s card. She had barely used it over the weeks she had been here and when she did it was all household expenses and the dresses that I had made her buy and which were still hanging in her closet. She hadn’t withdrawn any cash and I had to wonder who was helping her. I knew she didn’t have her own money but then one name came to mind. Colin Maxwell.
“Good morning Lucas, this is a pleasant surprise,” Colin answered his phone.
“Where is she?” I asked him.
“Where is who?” he asked me.
“Don’t play dumb with me, Rylee,” I said to him irritably.
“Why would you ask me where Rylee is?” he asked.
“Come on Colin, you’re the only person she’d run to,” I said to him.
“Are you telling me Rylee left and you don’t know where she is?” he asked me.
“Colin don’t bullshit me, is she with you or not?” I asked him.
“I haven’t spoken to Rylee in almost two weeks,” he said to me.
“Fuck,” I said and closed my eyes.
“Lucas what the hell is going on?” he asked me his voice suddenly rising.
“She left,” I said.
“Why would she leave? What the fuck did you do?” he asked me angrily.
“She’s pregnant,” I said to him.
“That makes no sense, why would she leave then?” he asked me.
“Because I accused her of fucking around and that it’s not mine,” I said to him.
“You’re a fucking bastard you know that,” he said to me.
“It’s twins,” I said to him.
“It has to be a mistake then, Rylee would never cheat,” he said to me.
“I saw her Colin, she was flirting with a man at a bar and then when I finally caught up to her she was coming out of the bathroom tugging down her dress and that bastard followed her out,” I said to him angrily.
“I don’t care what you think you saw, Rylee would never cheat on you,” he said.
“Then how do you explain twins and what I saw,” I told him.
“Lucas, she spent six years with me and all she ever talked about was you. How she wasn’t good enough because she’d been raped. She never even went on a date in all that time. She never looked at another man because it was always you she was thinking about. She couldn’t bear to have another man touch her after what happened to her. You really royally fucked this one up because you think you saw something and now she’s out there alone and pregnant!” he yelled at me.
“Shit,” I said and my eyes caught her wedding ring still lying on my table.
“I really thought you’d be different because of everything you two went through to be together but I see you’re just another typical asshole. Take what you want and discard it when you’re done. I sincerely hope you never find her because you don’t deserve her and when she contacts me I’ll help her escape you so don’t even bother calling me again,” he said and put the phone down in my ear.
“Baz,” I said and I could feel him shift.
“Please stop ignoring me,” I said to him.
“What do you want halfling?” he asked me and I sighed in relief.
“Rylee left,” I told him.
“I know, I kept quiet to give her a head start,” he said.
“Why the fuck would you do that?” I asked him.
“Because Colin’s right, you don’t deserve her. I tried to warn you and you wouldn’t listen now you’ve lost the only woman who ever loved you no matter what you did or said, she loved you for you,” he said.
“We need to find her,” I said to him.
“Why do you care, you don’t believe those children are yours so let her live her life in peace, she’s better off without you,” he said.
“Fuck sakes Baz, help me,” I said to him.
“No,” he said.
“Please,” I said.
“To what end halfling?” he asked me.
“I just needed time to adjust to everything. I still love her despite everything and you know that we need each other,” I said.
“No, you need her. She doesn’t need you anymore, she’s already felt the pain of rejection because you’ve done it repeatedly yet she stayed and now that she’s gone now you want her to stay?”
Baz cut me off again after that and his words were sinking in. I had rejected her over and over again and he was right, I didn’t deserve her and this was what she wanted, to be rid of me. I was a failure.
