The wedding was elegant and not too long. Cindy looked beautiful and I could see she was truly happy. Marcus was beaming and he couldn’t take his eyes off her. I wished things were like that with me and Rylee, but life happens right and the shit gets beaten out of you around every corner.
“Congratulations you two crazy kids,” I said as Marcus and Cindy made their way over to us.
“I’m pretty sure I’m older than you Lucas,” Marcus said as we laughed.
“You are positively glowing Cindy,” I said to her.
“Well that might be because I’m pregnant,” she whispered.
“What? That’s great news!” I said and shook Marcus’s hand again.
“Lucas is right, you look really beautiful,” Rylee said as she and Cindy hugged briefly.
“So do you! That dress is just stunning,” Cindy said.
“It might not survive the night,” I said and Rylee slapped my arm as she glared at me.
“I agree that wedding dress is going to be ripped off soon,” Marcus said.
“Don’t you dare,” Cindy threatened him.
We spent the evening making small talk, dancing, eating and I knew Rylee had an enjoyable time. Her cheeks had more colour even though she didn’t drink a drop of alcohol and she only laughed as one man asked her to dance and I threatened to rip his head off. Nobody made a move towards her for the rest of the night and Baz was content with that.
“I think we should go back to the hotel now,” I said in her ear at around one am.
“You’re not ripping my dress,” she said sternly.
“That depends on how fast you take it off,” I said and that familiar blush crept onto her cheeks.
We said goodbye to our hosts and wished them well until we met again and I practically had to drag Rylee out of there as she took her time in saying goodbye.
“Are you trying to kill me?” I asked her once I finally had her in the car.
“Whatever are you talking about?” she asked me.
“You know very well that dress leaves nothing to my imagination,” I said and she smiled evilly.
“I really don’t know what you’re talking about, it’s just a dress,” she said.
“Are you even wearing any underwear?” I asked her.
“No,” she said casually and I gripped the steering wheel harder as she laughed at me.
“Really killing me,” I said as she crossed her legs and the dress fell open revealing both her legs.
“I feel a headache coming on,” she said and laughed at the expression on my face.
“It’s been scientifically proven that orgasms are good for relieving headaches,” I said glancing at her.
“Really? Can you prove it?” she asked me playfully.
“Oh yes,” I said as we pulled up to the hotel.
I pulled her along as we walked through the foyer as she kept laughing at me and I pushed her against the wall the moment the elevator doors closed. I kissed her with urgency and pressed myself against her and she responded by pressing closer to me as I lifted her one leg.
I reluctantly let go of her as the elevator doors pinged and opened. An elderly couple waited for us to exit and I practically dragged Rylee back to the room. She pushed me against the door the moment I closed it and I picked her up and walked to the bedroom.
“I’ve missed you,” she whispered as I unzipped her dress and pulled it down her body. She hadn’t been lying about the underwear.
I took my jacket off and she ripped my shirt open, buttons falling to the floor as I pulled it off. I pinned her down on the bed and entered her swiftly, no foreplay, nothing, the need to be joined was greater than anything else.
That night was the best sleep I had ever had and I had made peace with the past. Fighting with her was like fighting with myself, nothing good could come of it. I woke up the following morning to a feverish Rylee shivering next to me.
She was pale and I was worried as I called Stella to meet us at the house later that afternoon. I changed our flights and I packed our clothes as I made Rylee take a bath. She didn’t have much energy but she insisted on walking out of the hotel by herself.
I carried her onto the jet and she lay on the couch as we flew back to Aurora. By the time we reached the house she was groaning and holding her stomach and I had to carry her to the infirmary where Stella was waiting.
“Give us some privacy Lucas,” Stella said as she took Rylee’s blood pressure.
“I’ll be right outside,” I said.
Stella came outside after two hours as I paced up and down. She didn’t look me in the eye and I felt dread surround me. She shifted from one foot to the other as I stood in front of her and forced her to look at me.
“What’s wrong with her?” I asked.
“I’m sorry Lucas, you’ll have to ask her,” she said to me nervously.
“Why?” I asked frowning.
“Doctor patient confidentiality, she doesn’t want me to tell you,” she said.
“What the fuck is that supposed to mean?” I asked loudly.
“Talk to your wife, I have her on an IV drip now, she’ll be done in a few hours and then I’ll discharge her,” she said and walked back into the room where Rylee was.
I left the infirmary and went to my office as I thought about what Stella said. What could be so terrible that Rylee didn’t want her to tell me. My heart started beating rapidly as I thought about all the incurable diseases out there, ones we were susceptible to and I felt a pang of hurt in my heart at the thought of losing her.
“Can I talk to you?” Hannah asked as she stood in the doorway of my office.
“Sure,” I said and leaned back in my seat.
“Whatever happens, keep an open mind and don’t go off the rails like you always do,” she said to me.
“What are you talking about?” I asked her.
“I saw you and Rylee, it was bad, probably the worst fight you’ve ever had, it won’t end well if you do what you always do,” she said.
“There’s something wrong with Rylee and she doesn’t want Stella to tell me,” I said after a while.
“Brother, please I’m begging you,” she said close to tears.
“Hannah, whatever it is, we’ll deal with it,” I said to her.
“If you let her go she’ll die,” she said and I saw the tears in her eyes.
“I wasn’t planning on ever letting her go, hey come here,” I said as I stood up and walked over to her.
She hugged me tightly and then wiped her eyes as I held her close to me. I saw Rev watching us from the doorway and I nodded for him to take over. Hannah was really upset by what she’d seen and my hands were slightly shaking because if Hannah was worried then I should be worried too.
I sat back in my chair as Rev led Hannah out and I stared off into the unknown. I couldn’t concentrate on work and three hours later I saw Rylee as she walked past my office to our room. I got up reluctantly and followed her.
The bathroom door was closed and I sat down on the couch to wait for her. She looked much better when she opened the door, her cheeks had colour again and whatever Stella had given her had worked. She smiled at me as she sat down next to me on the couch.
“You look better,” I said as I watched her.
“I feel much better now,” she said and her eyes were bright and shining.
“So… are you going to tell me?” I asked her.
“I know we haven’t been married for very long but I’m pregnant,” she said with a smile as she looked expectantly at me.
“You’re what?” I asked her a blank expression on my face.
“I’m pregnant,” she said sounding excited.
“Pregnant,” I said softly.
“Yes,” she said and laughed.
“How far?” I asked her.
“Stella drew some blood so we’ll probably know tomorrow,” she said.
“This is just fucking great,” I said and lowered my head into my hands.
“Aren’t you happy?” she asked me.
“I don’t know what I am right now,” I said and stood up. I walked out of the room and closed my office door behind me as I leaned against it.
I replayed Hannah’s words in my head and I took deep breaths to calm myself because I wanted to rip apart everything in my office. I didn’t know how to feel because there was a chance that it was mine and a chance that it wasn’t.
I went back to the infirmary and found Stella making notes in her small office. I sat down on the chair in front of her and she eyed me warily.
“I want to know how far along she is the moment you have the results,” I said to her.
“I’m sure Rylee will share all the information with you,” she said to me.
“Stella, I’m still the Sire of this lair, don’t make me force you to submit,” I said to her.
“You’re putting me in a very difficult position and why aren’t you happy?” she asked me.
“It’s complicated okay,” I said. I didn’t need the entire world to know about Rylee’s infidelity.
“I really thought you’d be happy because Rylee was so excited,” she said as she looked down again.
“Please just do this for me Stella,” I asked her.
“From the questions I asked her and her symptoms I’d say she’s around four weeks,” she said.
“Four weeks,” I repeated as my mind started calculating.
“Yes, so you’ve got a road ahead of you but still long enough to get everything ready,” she said with a smile.
“Thanks,” I said and stood up.
“Lucas, just remember, stress and fighting isn’t good for her or the baby at this stage. Take it easy and try not to get her too worked up, this is supposed to be a joyous time,” she said.
“I’ll keep that in mind,” I said to her.
I stood outside the infirmary not knowing where to go or what to do. The timeline didn’t really give me any answers and I wondered if the thought of the baby’s heritage had crossed Rylee’s mind. I doubt that it did, she seemed too happy about this pregnancy. Baz was unusually quiet as well and he ignored the questions in the back of my mind.
